- Update 2016-01-17: It's possible that "bigger" or "smaller" than 2 gigs makes a difference, if buying a drive, try and buy one bigger than 2 gigs and one smaller than 2 gigs.
ntldrismissing.com has boot disks available. Here's the info on how to download the zip file, extract it, format a USB stick, and copy the files needed for fixing the error "ntldr is missing" on Windows XP.
As an alternative, if you can't get it to boot up, try making Hirens Boot USB • Create a Hiren's Boot ... their "NTLDR is missing" fix uses my files.
I wish the video wasn't so blurry, and shaky, but I wanted to get this out asap because I keep getting asked for help on this point.
Fat32 has a hard drive limit of 32 gigs; so it's possible you have to use a USB stick smaller than that.
It just occurred to me why at 2:13 I click the download folder and the sub folder wasnt there. It's because I downloaded the file as user twit_000 but I was running the program as user administrator
LIFE SAVER - Option #4 worked for me. I was almost ready to restore my computer to factory state and lose two programs I have been using since 1999 - which are not available anymore (companies went out of business) (even the year does not look right anymore, its been so long ago) - Mucho Thanks :)
Hi Miles, (I hope you are still reading these!). I recently had a disaster with a 1TB external hard drive onto which I had copied all photos and videos of my kids earliest years. Then I remembered that one of my old PCs was still in the attic. It ran Win XP but I figured I could boot it up once and at least copy the files (up to 2016) off that one.
However, it is showing the "NTLDR is missing error". I can't remember encountering this previously but I must have because I found a USB with some of your files on it (the putonusb ones but no autoexec.bat. So I renamed fixntldr.bat). I tried to follow your instructions here to make a bootable USB but when it boots up the PC treats the USB as C: and lists various copy and rename errors
C:\>rename boot.ini boot.ini.bak
Path not found
C:\>copy a:
tldr ntldr /-Y
Invalid drive specification
Should these files be run from a floppy disk only?
(I tried lazesoft also but it recommends using Installation CD which I do not have)
Do I need to resort to a screwdriver-based solution?
RE: Michael Leblanc: The alternative I would offer, is trying to make "Hirens Boot USB" (which has my files inside of it). If that doesn't work either, I'd recommend taking it to a shop; especially if you are trying to fix over the phone.
So i did everything as you said. When i booted from usb and pressed "Y" and then ctr alt delete nothing happened, so iturned off my pc.When i turned it on again and go to booting menu it frozes everytime i chose USB or even drive. Is there any chance i can fix it or it's done for good?
When you say "it frozes everytime" do you mean that you press "Enter" to select an option and the screen doesn't change, or perhaps goes to an all black screen?
Either way, I've not run into that scenario. This is a wacky off the wall suggestion, but maybe try pulling the power cord from the computer, or maybe reseat the cables to the hard drive. If that doesn't immediately change the situation, then I'd recommend taking it into a shop.
Hi Miles, when I did the USB boot (F12) on my broken computer it says "Windows couldn't start because following file's missing \System32\hal.dll", any tips?
I assume you tried option1? Try option 2 then 3 then 4, etc.
Miles Comer none of them worked it says system 32\hal.dll
Hello, I tried using both the CD method and it still shows "NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart", then when I tried to change the Boot order so that it boots from the CD, I get the "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
I figured maybe the CD drive is faulty so I'll give the USB method a shot.
Then I tried the USB method and it still shows "NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart", then when I tried to change the Boot order so that it boots from the USB, I get the "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". The laptop has 4 usb slots so I tried all of them but no success. Please Help?
Hi Qays. Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I've found that for some reason different USB manufacturers will work when others don't; so if you have another USB drive that you can test with, do it; otherwise, it's probably time to take the PC into the shop.
Hello Miles. I dunno what is happening but everytime I open my pc after I choose the option it says NTLDR MISSING PRESS ANY KEY TO RESTART then after you pressed a key it says invalid partition table, so everytime I open my pc I need to format my usb stick and do the steps all over again
GoodKnight Oh whoops. You are right, the video just says how to boot the PC. I list "some possible" fixes at ntldrismissing.com (which mostly involve copying the files from the USB drive to the C drive)
+Miles Comer Sorry for the late reply. I've fixed it after I asked the question. And thank you Miles for helping out!
i get a hal.dll error when trying to boot from the usb any help?
If you get to the options screen, try all 10 options. If you aren't even getting to the options screen, try a different USB stick
If all 10 options don't work, I recommend pulling drive to get data
I've had a broken laptop sitting in my closet for 5 years and you fixed it. Thank you.
Kristoffer Bakken Yes option to reboot Yes matter what do it says
Thanks a lot Miles! This worked wonderfully on my Win7 x64. I would like to point out one thing though. After choosing 'Y' and going through all the 10-12 options (including Safe Mode), I thought this method did not work; what I did not realize was that after choose 'Y' the problem was fixed and I could have booted from my HDD.
Maybe you can add a note in your tutorial about this.
patni999 ? Well I love to hear good news, but get this; this fix is aimed at WinXP installations, Vista, 7, and 8 don't use NTLDR. It sounds like the "press Y" step set your computers hard drive to active, which might have fixed your issue. Thanks for the feedback
All I can say is that it worked for me, thanks heaps!!
+nathan quick I somehow can't reply to your comment; I'm going to say try Hirens Boot CD, details in the description
I plugged my USB in my other computer (the broken one)
No option to re-boot. No matter what I do it says "NTLDR is missing. Press Cntrl+Alt+Del to restart"
Power the broken PC off, then press the power button and look for a button to press to enter "Setup" or "Boot Menu" or something like that. Typically it's like F1, F9, F10, Esc, Del, etc.
Miles Comer Thank you!!
Miles Comer
Do you know what to do after?
***** I assume you made the USB drive a bootable "fixing usb drive" in your working computer already right? Once it's in the broken computer, pick back up around 5:28 to see you finishing the process to make the USB drive boot into the 10 options where you can use one of them to boot the PC.
Will this work on a dell inspiron mini
After I click Y and Ctrl+alt+del it reboots and I click F12 like you did. After that I get the boot device options and when I try to select the USB it says Ntldr is missing under the list of devices. PLEASE HELP!!!
Max Folden :-( can you try a different USB drive? It sounds like it's trying to boot from USB drive but not working for some reason. I have a lot of other info at ntldrismissing.com if you want to read through some of it before pulling the hard drive to get the data
I've already used a PNY and also a Transcend flash drive
You can try the "Hirens Boot CD" it includes my solution. But I can never find out how to download it
Thx for trying to help people but...
you should know firstly when formatting a USB to fat32 it does not work with all drives, I tried to follow your instructions and when under format I reciee the message "device to big" this also rendered the device unuseable untill a was able to find a program that allowed me to format to any type without restrictions
Ok so I formatted the drive ...but as you may be aware I did not select "make a start up disk" because I never used the formatter on the downloaded file, I followed the rest of the instructiions....but when you reboot and then press f12 to select to device I geet 2 options even though there is only one usb device attached in either case selecting either choice does NOT bring up the windows DOS screen instead i get this message
"Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"....?
so now what plz?
Was the flash drive 32GB or larger? I wonder if the problem is the fat32 system can't handle a hard drive larger than that. Perhaps try on a smaller flash drive?
I have a problem, it doesn't appear the 10 solutions on my screen, do you have any idea of how can solve this problem??? please
Try making Hirens Boot USB Create a Hiren's Boot CD USB Flashdrive (1080p) their "NTLDR is missing" fix uses my files.
hi miles im having a problem in the part to press the y key everything is perfect until it says bad command or file name pls reply fast thanks
+lionel messi try making it again, these screenshots might help milescomer.com/tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrmoreinfo/usbscreenshots.htm , or try a different USB drive if you have one (sorry for missing this comment until now)
Windows could not start because hal.dll is corrupt after i did what you said up until the 10 possible tries...all 10 failed and gave this message. what now?!
lunaticz0r this likely means that there are more errors with the system than just with the boot files. To fix past this point you would probably need to reinstall the OS. Or more likely, replace the hard drive and start a fresh OS install, and try to recover the data by attaching the old drive as secondary.
It works on fourth try. Thanks! But if my usb is not connected to my laptop it still says that ''NTLDR is missing'' . I can only use my laptop with connected usb on it, help me! what should I do to work the laptop without the usb?
here is the page for details on getting it to work without the boot disk tinyempire.com/notes/ntldr/ntldr-fix.html
I click start ...on pc : formatting the device...but now error failed to format the device..why ? And what I will do ? Thanks
+CheekeTV Right click the program file and choose "Run as Administrator" (apologies for missing this comment until now)
everything seems to be going well until the last step on your video... when i type Y and everything.. it reboots with a black screen and nothing happens :(
I would say try using a USB drive from another manufacturer if you have one, but I wouldn't buy a new one, instead, go ahead and take it to a shop
on my acer aspire one it shows me now PXE-E53: No boot filename received
and PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
NTLDR is missing
Please help me i am in trouble :( what should i do ? :(
+Samy Boyka A "PXE" boot is when it tries to boot from the network, meaning it's not booting from the USB drive. Google "acer bios boot key" to find out which button to press on the keyboard to bring up the "boot screen" so you can select booting from the USB. If you are already doing that, try remaking the USB because it's not working right (or possibly have to enable "legacy booting" or something like that)
wait for the run as administrator option, what password are you supposed to input?
The administrator password is something set by "the user", possibly you. If you can't remember it, try a blank password (IE: just click OK)
Hello Miles! I made the USB boot and the 4th try worked for me, and I almost got back to windows, if I just can avoid that blue screen which is a stop error 7B!!! Well, I'm asking if you can help me with this coz I have no idea about how to deal with it oO I will be so grateful if you can ^^
By chance did you make a change in the bios to your hard drive configuration? Look for a "storage" option in the bios and change it from AHCI to either ATA or Legacy or something like that. Google stop error 7B for more info
hai my usb device state that it is write protected and dont allow me to format it , any solution to this problem??
is there a physical switch on the usb drive you can flip? Other than that, try a different usb device
Very nice job. To the point, no fluff, no bs and no hiding any steps. Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks!
hi miles god day! i have some problem i follow the steps you show and it works but when i already access in my bootdisk i cant enter/press "y" it almost my keyboard in not working i already go to my bios and all parameters are enable. does that mean that the controller in my window is disable? is there any solution about this hope you can help me thnx
+Harrisonic yong hey mate, im having the exact same prob, my keyboard was fully working until this. just wondering if you found a fix?
I have had more than a few people mention the keyboard no longer being recognized but not sure of a solution, might try unplugging/ plugging back in, switching ports, maybe even setting up legacy USB in BIOS
While adding dos files it states the disk is write protected ,but I have done everything required to get rid of it but it still persists
Can u help plss?
It says "device media is write protected"
Lionel Messi I've had others tell me they have that problem, but I'm not sure what the answer is; it sounds like the keyboard commands aren't coming through to the computer; perhaps try unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in?
I did everything and then when I rebooted it I clicked the usb device in the boot device menu and it sayed NTLDR is missing
press any key to restart
+Nathan Quick try making it again, these screenshots might help milescomer.com/tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrmoreinfo/usbscreenshots.htm , or try a different USB drive if you have one (sorry for missing this comment until now)
When I start to format I get an error message saying "device media is write-protected"
Gabe The Babe Is there a "read only" switch on your flash drive perhaps? Maybe try a different flash drive. OR, make sure you are right clicking the HP formatter program and choosing "Run as Administrator"
At 1:15
I ran it as an administrator it wouldn't let me run it otherwise. I'll try to look for another fix, thanks for contribution. Also do u think maybe it's because I don't have a cd rom or floppy disk?
Gabe The Babe bummer. There is a "for pay" fix on ntldrismissing.com (I need to update title since I sold the URL). A lack of CD rom and floppy should not be a problem
I did this but i put the usb and launch with it but after it said type the command interpreter plz help.
If that's the error you got then the USB isn't working correctly. I would say either try a different USB stick, or just try making it again
Error message: "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem" what now?
Did you get this after choosing one of the ten options? Try one of the other ten options
there is 10 more?
You should get a prompt for 10 options to choose from; thats what I was talking about. Where are you getting the error you mentioned?
I got it after my 5th try. I really want to fix my computer!! 😩😤
It's probably not likely... but go ahead and try the other 5. You may have to do a "Repair Install" www.techspot.com/vb/topic8356.html
First time you are in windows, copy files NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from USB to root directory C:\>. Go to BIOS and change your fisrt boot device to hard disk again. Save options. System should boot normaly now, if originaly only problem was NTLDR missing.
my windows 8.1 laptop won't let me copy the "autoexec.bet" to my usb... help!
Devin Pasco What kind of error message are you getting? To be safe, email me at the address on the website (search the ntldrismissing.com page for an @ sign)
Thank for you for the video. When I am on the disk storage format step trying to save in the dos files. It says it has failed. I have tried several times to get pass this step
alise herrera the program that does the formatting. close it, then right click and choose "Run as Administrator" (if that programming is running without admin rights it cannot format the usb)
hey !. where do i supposed to insert my iso file ?. did you guys understand it ? Hey Miles Pls where do i insert my ISO/windows xp ?
None of this solution requires an .iso file; the files you need are on the site ntldrismissing.com
Tsolmon Gantumur this is for fixing an error called "NTLDR is missing"
first of all thank you so much for responding.
so can i format my laptop by only using this ?
(sorry for my bad technical knowledge)
if so , what will i get windows xp or windows.
i dont really understand how can people format their computer without iso file or something ?
Tsolmon Gantumur Um.. stop whatever you are doing. This video (and the website) are for repairing a Windows XP installation. If you want to format a laptop (which will erase Windows XP) search for "format hard drive"
Thank you for responding. i was trying to format my laptop using usb with WinToFlash program , wich burned the iso file to usb , but when i tried to boot from usb it said NTLDR is missing. can you help me ? :)
what if when it rebooted. i missed the boot menu on boot up
Just reboot it again; you might have to press a button (like Esc, Ctrl, F9, etc) and choose the option to boot from USB; some computers are so old they don't have a USB boot option, so you'll have to make the CD solution (details back at ntldrismissing dot com)
After you reboot it and go to USB drive it won't load up
sorry for the delay in responding, I somehow missed this comment; try remaking the USB drive or using a different USB drive, I'm unsure why but some drives just don't seem to want to boot USB; if you want "Hirens Boot CD" has a USB option, details at ntldrismissing dot com
im trying to follow ur steps on win 7 and i dont know what to do
can u help?
Cyrus Salo which step are you having a problem with?
usb cuz when i right click like in the video i dont have a setting for (save target as) so that is my trouble
Try an option to "download" or "save" or "pull" maybe? What browser are you running? Then search the internet for " how to download", might do the trick
i was using google. i think i know what the problem is but not sure i havent tried it yet though
i tryed all of the options and non worked number 9 just froze my pc
+Hawk Wings bummer; the boot disk "works around" specific problems with the boot files, if that didn't fix it we'll likely need to "go deeper", here are the resources I recommend: milescomer.com/tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm#What_if_none_of_the_options_worked?
+Miles Comer its alright I managed to get a windows 7 disk but great video
Thank you very much... It works perfectly..!
Man, thank you very much!
trying this tomorrow, hopefully this works man!! 😁
I have a Mac backup computer, can you help me?
Download the iso for the CD fix miles.ericjmyers.netdna-cdn.com/fixntldriso.zip then try to make a USB from the iso. I googled mac make usb from iso and got this page osxdaily.com/2015/06/05/copy-iso-to-usb-drive-mac-os-x-command/
+Miles Comer ok thanks I will try!
Thank You so much much miles comer My Windows Xp Works Again . Thanks for your help
Thanks so much for the link problem solved
yay!
+Miles Comer i did not understand
+L1nksYT visit my website (url is in the video in the first few seconds) for more info and hopefully you will find what you need. If not any repair shot should be able to fix this
Bianca M Yes boot filename received
I keep getting invalid system disk.@Miles
When in the process do you get this error?
Me funciono, luego que pude entrar restaure los archivos que borre, y si estaban en la papelera.
I believe this says "it worked and I was able to restore the files I deleted from the recycling bin"
I love u I love u man
Thank you so much man....
U saved my life
Worked
Thanks So Much, My PC Don't Have A CD Unit, This USB Is Very Usefull... I'm Use A 4 Option
how is this supposed to be helpful if you end the video by not actually showing how to fix the problem
The website you see in the background predates TH-cam. The full info is there, but I created this video to help people get past the hardest part of the process. If you now have a USB stick with the files on it, you may only need to plug it into the broken PC and reboot to get back into Windows XP, if not, please check the website in the description for full details.
thank you..:)
Thanks
por que en ingles maldita sea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
