Magruder Corridor Adventure

  • We struck off to see what the Magruder Corridor was about in October. It just so happens it is basically out our back door, so in no time we were off the pavement and on the trail. We spent four days exploring the Magruder as some of the research we did indicated that while we could travel it in two days we wouldn't have time to relax and explore. Four days ended up about right for us.
The Magruder Corridor is also known as the southern Nez Perce Trail (Lolo being the northern route). There are plenty of places to camp along the way, and nearly endless side trips you could potentially take. The main road was in great shape, and it appeared that some of it had been graded right before we drove it. If you have ok clearance you won't need four wheel drive if you don't plan to explore off the main road.

Oh this was nice. I went through in September last year. I kinda wish I had thrown one more night in there now. Thanks for sharing!!

We’ve talked about driving the Corridor for many years but there’s always been weather, fires and more weather that deterred us. Thanks! For the video.
This year’s adventure, for us, trying to retrace the Lewis and Clark routes and so far we’ve traveled along the route between Paducah and the Pacific. We even lucked onto “launch day” reenactment near Wood River, Illinois, 220 years after the departure up the Missouri River.

Yes I could see the timing of travelling the corridor could be a challenge - you have to wait so long for the snow to melt, and then it is fire season!
In retracing the Lewis and Clark route, you may be interested in the Lolo Motorway. It follows their route (roughly) across the Lolo Pass to the Clearwater River. We did that one last year as well, and it's an enjoyable few days. Here is the video we did: th-cam.com/video/218KFQhXNn8/w-d-xo.html

@@OccidentalistOutdoors yes, I watched the Lolo Motorway and we have completed sections from Missoula to the Pacific, and Missoula to Paducah - hiking, biking and driving.

My son and I will be riding through there with some friends in a few weeks. Thanks for a preview of what to expect. Looks like we better bring our fishing gear!

I hope you enjoy the trip! I just heard Elk City will have fuel again starting in July, which is good for a top off before you head into the backcountry.

Thanks for the Magruder corridor view. We’re going this summer and I was a bit worried about how much burned area there was. Obviously you didn’t camp in Utah because you were on your way somewhere specific because there are a billion places to camp and be in Utah. In North Dakota I hope you got to spend some time in Teddy Roosevelt national park. So many different kinds of environments and geology in a relatively small area. Not too many people except right near the visitors center.

Yes, there is a lot of burned area as you likely observed. Lots of wildflowers and more expansive views in the burns, so not all bad in my opinion. There are even some islands of trees and nice camps in a few spots on the burned ridges.
Yes, it wasn't for lack of camping opportunities that we didn't camp in Utah in 2023, that's for sure.
      Thanks!

Very nice backcountry road. Yes, with all those widowmakers a saw is a must. 100 nights…that’s great. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

We did have a good weather window! I can hardly wait to get back up into that country next year.

It’s an ez hike to the lookout. It would be unpleasant in a vehicle and you’d be in real trouble if you ran into someone coming the other way.

Yes, I'd call it more of a trail than a road, it's a good excuse to park and stretch your legs.
