  • Although many individuals experience mental illnesses, they often do not seek professional help due to reasons of perceived judgment or inability to relate personally to a therapist. Using her lived experience of anorexia and bulimia, Pheobe explores how one can turn their mental health lived experience of challenge and hardship into a tool for inspiring others to heal, and how the universality of experiences can facilitate one’s mental health recovery. Pheobe Ho is an Honours student studying Psychology at The University of Western Australia. Largely driven by her personal experiences of anorexia and bulimia, she is a passionate mental health advocate and avid mental health lived experience speaker, having spoken at local and national levels.
Pheobe currently works with Headspace Australia and is also a clinic receptionist at Western Australia’s only eating disorder outpatient clinic, and a research assistant at the UWA School of Psychological Science, evaluating a universal eating disorder risk reduction program.
Determined to encourage others to be their best in her role as the UWA Student Guild Welfare Officer, Pheobe has been involved in training mental health lived experience speakers in safe, purposeful ways. She has expanded welfare initiatives and organised platforms encouraging open mental health conversations, in hopes to reduce mental health stigma. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I live with Schizophrenia and Bipolar II. Over 7 years ago I was in a mental health clinic for a doctor's appointment and I saw a flyer for a job for those who were in recovery for at least a year so I applied. I have worked in the Advocacy department and currently am working at a peer -run peer support agency. It's a great fit for me because I'm doing something that I know about. I found my niche! So to anyone wanting to work in a mental health environment, go for it! It's empowering to you plus you help others.

Useful information. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in college, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

God`s Love for me and his forgiveness of my sins, helped me to get a truer perspective of myself and develop a deeper relationship with Him. I know He loves me unconditionally. It is I who harmed my mental health by distancing myself from Him. No one can Love you more than God and once you keep close to God daily then you will not be harsh on yourself and begin to grow in true Love

I'm glad you were able to find peace and an answer to your mental health journey. But I encourage you to watch the video again as it can show you how to use your experiences to empower others through their harshest times. I believe in god too and I believe you were sent here to pick on those tools to help build others.

Mental experience between a Admiral and an Office Worker are the same? Its meant to be a holding others. Thats that healing point. Izs like the work of an shepherd with sheeps, foxes, wolves n other dangerous factors.

I can't tell you how frustrating is to lose all of your credibility among friends family community and authority figures. Nothing you say is ever going to be trusted or believed again. It makes me so angry.
