  • Its been a bad week for Disney, but perhaps the biggest embarassment is the closure of their epically unpopular, billion dollar Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser hotel, which is going to be shutting down barely a year after launching.

The main problem is they made a hotel too expensive for most of the starry eyed fans that would actually want to go there, while the few who could afford 6000 a night are the type to spend it in the Bahamas with a box of cigars rather than blow it at a cosplay resort

I mean it’s $4000 for a family of 2, which is better than $6000. But still. The other big problem is that it’s exclusively Disney Star Wars, nothing to do with OT or Clone wars, the biggest success drivers of Star Wars.

Exactly. My friends and I were talking about this and were like who would drop $6000 on this for a 2 night trip? If it encompassed all of Star Wars, particularly the OT and maybe the Clone Wars, I could see a lot of big Star Wars fans going.
But instead it’s made exclusively for Disney Star Wars fans which none exist. And those that do, won’t drop even $1000 on this. Disney has completely ruined Star Wars that nobody wants anything to do with it anymore.

Just to be clear, the "$1 billion" figure people are throwing about was actually the cost of building the entire Star Wars land (actually closer to $1.5 billion). The hotel itself cost $350 million to build. Problem is there are also running costs: Disney was assuming it would consistently get 100% occupancy at full price, yielding them a 30% margin on bookings (after staff and other running costs). The hotel actually made a profit in its first year, but this year when they saw they could no longer fill it even after slashing prices, they realised it was going to start losing money every year if they kept it open. All told, net of tax write-offs etc, will Disney have lost about $250 million on this experiment.

    • @ACABFuck12_89

Source on the 350 million figure for the hotel. Seems low. I've seen both 1 billion dollars and half a billion dollars. Probably likely somewhere in the middle. And I also think your estimate is low for the entirety of Star Wars land which I read was 2 billion.
I think it's fair to say that Disney lost about a billion dollars on this hotel.

Team Disney is ignoring its own history. When Disneyland opened, "where is Mickey Mouse?" People on the Snow White adventure didn't get the memo--"you are Snow White." Peter Pan's Flight has undergone a lot of changes since July 17, 1955.
It took months for Walt to figure out that he needed Disney characters in his Disneyland. Walt didn't like the repeated cries for more Three Little Pig sequels--"pigs can't top pigs."
The current Team Disney is enraged at fandom for expecting to see Star Wars characters instead of the self-insert Team Disney characters that could be dropped into any story. Even referencing Luke or Darth Vader makes their blood boil and they turn green with envy. They don't accept that "the customer is always right."

My wife and I, and my two kids (living in Seattle, WA... yeah, I know, ugh) used to go to Great Wolf Lodge every winter for my daughter's bday (and because it was dark and cold here). Big wilderness, animal themed lodge with a huge water park (all indoors, except for a few outdoor hot tubs which was awesome). They had variously themed restaurants. They had this "magic" themed interactive game with wands and level-ups and secrets, etc. All four of us (and a couple of times we brought 2-3 of my daughter's friends as well) would spend 3-4 days and nights there for 2-3 grand. Had a FANTASTIC time running around with the kids, shooting their magic wands at everything trying to make them move and say something, gathering clues to unlock further magic clues. They had employees telling stories to the kids several times each day. They had animatronic animals talking to the kids all over the place. The "magic" game was actually engaging with at least a vague plot. We went there probably 5 years in a row and had a great time each time. Disney could SO EASILY have made something even better than that. Give Great Wolf Lodge a shot. We absolutely LOVED it, again 4 or 5 years in a row with our kids. Great stuff. Sheesh, just build an interactive resort for the kids (and parents) to explore and interact with. Then set the kids loose. Printing money like no tomorrow.

Because, if you think about it, the idea that it was supposed to be Han and Leia’s “honeymoon location” could have been the perfect setting to play it like a sort of “Die Hard in Space” hostage situation, where remnant loyalists of the Empire take over the whole ship while visitors/passengers are aboard it, leaving Han and Leia themselves, and maybe even a climactic later entrance for Luke, after he secretly boards the ship, to take the ship back. All played out before the “hostage” passengers. Kind of a missed opportunity to include the classic characters, I’d say.🤷🏻

If it had been a star wars village and regular guests could've been costumed like extras in a film, even given a chance to actually be in one of their new films, and this was one level of the experience for the tiny niche, that could afford it that could've worked.

By far, the best thing about Disney is the awesome material they provide for all of these content creators. Thank you. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

A long time ago, RLM (Scientist Man's Plan to Save Star Wars) recommended that Disney price gouge customers under the assumption that Star Wars fans will buy anything. Little did we realize Disney actually did what they recommended. Also Disney is unable to detect irony in RLM's messages.

I think it's crazy that instead of, say, lowering the prices and making it more affordable for the average Disney goer, they're just going to close it. I guess so they can write it off as a loss... What a waste.

Yeah went to Disney twice. First time was an eye opener and it for sure felt like a chore rather than a relaxing experience. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt so we went again knowing about the planning that was necessary and it still ended up being more of a sit around a wait in lines all day experience and was not enjoyable. Universal was a little better but overall would not do theme parks like that again.

To give a scale to the monumental waste that Disney spent in this project, $2 billion spent was the same as the cost to build the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building in Dubai was $1.5 billion in 2010 which is $2 billion in 2023.
The Burj Khalifa is 2700ft tall! with 3.3 million sq ft of space.
What the public saw here is a "hotel" the size of a Motel 6 with no windows and looking like an industrial complex from the outside , if I were a Disney shareholder I would be screaming for blood...

We need you guys to write a movie for "Fanboys 2, the Quest to Save Star Wars" and at the end, someone who looks like Darth Kennedy is kicked down a reactor shaft or something. Im sure there are people who would pay to see it three or four times in theaters.

One thing that I found daft with it, that it has a fixed ending, so it doesn't matter what side you choose, Rey always wins at the end. If they did a multi ending story, so you could have the First Order win with Rey being killed or captured. Then if you reduced to cost to say about £2000 for the 2 nights and have all inclusive as well as alcohol, then it could have been a better experience. Make it non cannon as well, so you can allow for the different endings. Then you could also each year switch to the different Star Wars eras, each with it's own multi ended storyline.
Just think if they did that, how much better it would have been. Even swapping between the different trilogies every 4 months.

A normal Hotel is a huge chunk of change to design, build and operate. Disney is eating a crapton of money if they're closing this boutique hotel.

StarWars is like the pet you had for 17 years. It’s old, it’s fur is matted, and it’s in pain with every step it takes.
If you truly love it you will take it behind the barn and have it watch the field while you chamber a round.

Oh happy day. The reports I've read says it cost two billion dollars. This isn't a Star Wars hotel. This hotel resembles nothing like Star Wars. In fact Anna that Star Wars girl had an amazing idea for this hotel. If they decided to do what Anna suggested this hotel would easily be a success. Anna even gave an idea that would be a 💰 maker for Disney involving Rey and Kylo. Of course Anna's intelligent.

Hotels are for sleeping and breakfast. I’ve stayed at some of the most famous 5* hotels, I don’t want to be there for 48 hours with a schedule of which windowless room I need to be in. How could these Disney idiots think that is an experience worth $6k? That they spent $2B on a hotel with 100 rooms is mind boggling.

The mood that I have seen around after the Galactic Starcruiser closed seems like the Death Star being blown to pieces by the rebels. But like in the end of Episode 4 of Star Wars, the emperor is still on the throne.
