Ash vs Paul is the only battle that lasted 3 episodes, was build up over the entire Diamond and Pearl saga, and had two characters with opposite personalities and believes that over the course of their journey learned some things from one another and adopted them into their own strategy. Infarnape had the most interesting story of all of Pokemon in the entire series. THAT IS NUMBER ONE! And Paul is the best rival Ash had and the only one that goes through his own VISIBLE character development!

He is not overrated he totally dominated on ash...and he was a true rival of ash unlike Alain who just fought 2-3 battles ash and Paul nearly fought 10-15 battles in which Paul totally dominated in the final league match ash wanted to defeat Paul so bad and he just wants to prove his way of training was correct Paul isn’t overrated at all and I think he is a bit underrated...

Even in Sawyer's character scheme of being made as that he still affected the Kalos scene more than Paul did the Sinnoh scene and caused stronger growth and reflection for Ash than Paul ever did.

Ash vs Paul in the Sinnoh League is my favorite of all-time.. It really showcased the entirety of their fraught relationship, and marked the turning point as well where Paul's defeat was handled with grace (instead of him getting pissed off or angry at his Pokemon), and also he started to respect Ash. Ash in turn was able to properly go head-to-head with Paul since their last full battle where he was completely crushed, and he was in a bind many times due to Paul's strategies, but in the end persevered on to clinch the victory. In my opinion, Paul and Ash's rivalry was the most intense. It was a battle of not pride, but ideologies -- and despite Ash's win, both learned to acknowledge each other's strength and weaknesses, and over the course of DP, we also saw how they had each improved. Ash of course got smarter and more creative and resourceful, while Paul treated his Pokemon with _marginally_ more care which I guess was a huge improvement. He even thanked Electivire lol. And technically it was his "you're pathetic" speech to Infernape that spurred it to activate Blaze... so thanks Paul? He was (and still is) my favorite rival by far ~
Charizard X is actually neutral to water attacks and is only weak to Rock, Ground, and Dragon. So the only type advantage greninja had was resisting fire

Type match up does not decide everything. These are real breathing animals so there many factors that goes into it. The Pokémon training, the strategy during the battle, and many other factors. While type match up gives you an advantage it not everything

I don’t think we appreciate how truly, even from a game perspective, magnificent Paul’s and Sawyer’s strategies and movesets against Ash were, especially Paul’s. His team was designed to perfectly destroy Ash’s Sinnoh team and Sawyer had a counter for literally every member of Ash’s Kalos team.
That and the team Paul used against Ash at Lake Acuity which just utterly destroyed him.Consatntly switching out pokemon,using Electabuzz's light screen to protect Paul's other pokemon was awesome.
Paul _annihilated_ Ash. He came in prepared with a strategy, and everything worked to his advantage (okay it was a bit of a plot armor too but still). Magmortar's Flame Body activating for Pikachu was way too convenient, Pikachu's Static worked but of course it had to be on Ursaring who had Guts... Paul had the gift of both a solid plan as well as luck on his side. He was already a very competent Trainer, but that full battle really showed how at that point in time, Paul's competitive style of battling edged out Ash's, while heartwarming, unrealistic "I believe in my Pokemon so they will just win!" and forced Ash to come up with certain new combinations and tactics in their next full battle (Lily of the Valley Island Conference).
@@Wheeler07 I don't personally think Ash vs Sawyer is THAT great... the final Greninja vs Sceptile is wonderful with all the animations but otherwise? quite a standard 6v6 Ash vs Paul is imo a clear no. 1 and Ash vs. Kukui no. 2

Also why did they put ash vs Blaine over ash vs Paul, their reasons for ash vs Blaine so high was nostalgia and charizard beating one opponent. Wow.

Ash vs Sawyer had a lot of emotion and hype behind it, especially when it came to Greninja vs Sceptile. I absolutely think it deserves the 2nd place here, but honestly the Japanese version was better solely because the Japanese opening theme that played during the battle fit way, way better than what they did in the English dub in my opinion.

A lot of the Sinnoh gym battles are way too underrated. Ash vs Maylene for example is one of the best gym battles we've ever gotten and no one ever talks about it
I loved this battle because it was built up throughout the Sinnoh series. Gary vs Ash was also a nice slow build to their final battle, but honestly, Paul was such a cooler rival than Gary imo. I'm surprised this battle didn't make it top 5 or 3. Maybe it's just me, but I think people need to take off their nostalgia goggles and take a look at the bigger picture.

@@abelnightroad5162 Paul... was a nice rival, but he was cucked by where he was placed, I firmly say that Gladion is a better rival than Paul was, and this is coming from someone who hated the first half of Sun and Moon, Gladion's main strength however, came from how he was a worthy rival of Ash AFTER the badass he proved himself to be in Kalos, why Gladion isn't the perfect rival however is because the show could barely keep itself intact for the first half, but after Ash got his act together suddenly it felt reasonable, and when the strong Ash we used to know started to manifest all over again, be it a little late, but still there, Gladion being a rival had more impact, it didn't have to be conflicting ideals and the fact that Gladion wasn't written as an edgelord and only looked the part which served as nice intimidation and reminder of his own strength the battle felt greatly more epic and all the small rivalries going on within the battle chip out Electivire vs Infernape where the rest of the battle was... honestly just kinda spectacle...

He knows how predictable Ash is, and uses the fact that Ash will use his same Pokemon to make a team that is guaranteed to beat Ash. I find that argument against the battle to be kind of dumb, since it would be inconsistent writing to make Paul use the exact same Pokemon as he did in Lake Acuity.

It still had many advantages like rain that gives 20 percent boost to water moves and lower fire by 20 percent plus charizard was hit by two Pikachu thunderbolt and even after mega evolution fire hits water neutrally only 🙃

Honestly here’s what he should’ve done to beat Cameron: send out Pignite first to deal with Hydregion and later Ferrothorn, Unfezant against Swanna, Snivy and Oshawatt against Samurott, and then all of Ash’s Pokemon weaken Lucario so Ash could finish it off with Pikachu
I'm predicting Ash VS Alan, Ash VS Kukui and Ash VS Gary will be on the list. Also Ash wasn't at an advantage against Alan's Mega Charizard it's part Dragon so it takes neutral damage to water moves.
I enjoyed seeing the list and of various fights throughout the 20+ years of the franchise. Maybe once Secrets of the Jungle come out, you can do top 10-20 Pokémon movies. Other list ideas, best anime movies coming out next year to look forward to, top 10 long running anime (300 episodes minimum), top 10-20 kingdom hearts songs (now that melody of memory is out), and top 10-20 sequel anime (examples include Yashahime, UQ Holder, Boruto, etc)
Ash vs. Alain is still my personal favorite battle despite the circumstances. Ash vs. Gladion felt kind of lacking in comparison for a final League battle, but Ash vs. Kukui CERTAINLY made up for it.
Ash vs Paul will always be #1 to me. Came back from a long line of losses with his original team and came back with the big win with a Pokémon Paul thought was weak. Hello plot twist!

Where is Ash vs May when they ended in a tie? That was an amazing battle. Yes I'm upset at this list.

@@PinkPuff07 Uhhhh....No. Their rivalry was a converging of their individual storylines. Alain saw Ash as his coping method for enjoying Pokemon battles again. Which he himself stated numerous times in the series.While Ash saw him as a mountain to climb for the mastery of Ash-Greninja. Hence why every interaction of theirs had a specific and peculiar purpose. Alain wanted to collect mega evolution energy and assume Greninja had some, then shifting into overall interest of the bond phenomenon. While Ash wanted to trigger the transformation and grow stronger with Greninja together. So their rivalry already has a unique basis and purpose. Then you throw in all of the Team Flare stuff, the tension of Alain's decision and Lysandre wanting to weaponize the bond phenomenon via his rivalry with Ash as the main catalyst for the plan. He didn't need tension or real history. Shota didn't have any of that with Ash Alain and Ash saw things in one another that they needed in order to rise above and continuously surpass, mixed in with their own personal situations. Especially in Alain's case. That's why for me, I prefer Paul and Alain's rivalries with Ash much more than any other. Paul and Ash's rivalry was very character driven while Ash and Alain's was narrative driven. Both brought unique aspects to it that no rival has ever done before and their character relationships went well beyond just "Hey I'm strong, you're strong. Lets fight" Sawyer and Ash's rivalry was rushed and ended in the Kalos League. Ash and Alain's rivalry ended in the team flare arc. Which was not rushed, OLM didn't care about the Kalos League so Ash and Sawyer's rivalry ending there was extremely hollow. Especially when Sawyer ends up crying at the end and THEN ends up doing NOTHING in the Flare arc. That's disrespectful considering he was one of the stronger trainers there. So no....I definitely don't agree with you. Also when the hell did I harass you? Are you okay?
3:14 Fun fact: Those leaves on Serperior's side are actually its hands. (I met Jamie McGonnigal, voice of Trip, Barry, and a Grumpig in an X and Y episode, at a con once. He was nice enough to give me signed Barry and Grumpig cards for free to give away at a monthly Pokémon kids event I used to volunteer for at my library. He also recorded a video for them. He was so nice.) 8:00 Pikamehameha! 14:30 EVs and IVs always confused me which is why I'm not a competitive player. 17:29 Ash/Pikachu Kamehameha I'm disappointed that Ash's battle against Lt. Surge wasn't an honorable mention. It was that episode where Pikachu proved it can be as strong, and eventually stronger, than it's evolved form and wanted to continue getting strong as a Pikachu.
#1 should've been Ash Greninja vs Mega Charizard (Ash vs Alain) from Pokemon XY&Z. That will always be the most hype battle in all of Pokemon history😎😎🤘🤘🤙🤙 I felt so bad that Ash lost in that match😩😭🙄

Ash vs Paul in the Sinnoh League is my favorite of all-time.. It really showcased the entirety of their fraught relationship, and marked the turning point as well where Paul's defeat was handled with grace (instead of him getting pissed off or angry at his Pokemon), and also he started to respect Ash. Ash in turn was able to properly go head-to-head with Paul since their last full battle where he was completely crushed, and he was in a bind many times due to Paul's strategies, but in the end persevered on to clinch the victory. In my opinion, Paul and Ash's rivalry was the most intense. It was a battle of not pride, but ideologies -- and despite Ash's win, both learned to acknowledge each other's strength and weaknesses, and over the course of DP, we also saw how they had each improved. Ash of course got smarter and more creative and resourceful, while Paul treated his Pokemon with _marginally_ more care which I guess was a huge improvement. He even thanked Electivire lol. And technically it was his "you're pathetic" speech to Infernape that spurred it to activate Blaze... so thanks Paul? He was (and still is) my favorite rival by far ~

The Pokémon training, the strategy during the battle, and many other factors. While type match up gives you an advantage it not everything

I don’t think we appreciate how truly, even from a game perspective, magnificent Paul’s and Sawyer’s strategies and movesets against Ash were, especially Paul’s. His team was designed to perfectly destroy Ash’s Sinnoh team and Sawyer had a counter for literally every member of Ash’s Kalos team.
That and the team Paul used against Ash at Lake Acuity which just utterly destroyed him.Consatntly switching out pokemon,using Electabuzz's light screen to protect Paul's other pokemon was awesome.
Paul _annihilated_ Ash. He came in prepared with a strategy, and everything worked to his advantage (okay it was a bit of a plot armor too but still). Magmortar's Flame Body activating for Pikachu was way too convenient, Pikachu's Static worked but of course it had to be on Ursaring who had Guts... Paul had the gift of both a solid plan as well as luck on his side. He was already a very competent Trainer, but that full battle really showed how at that point in time, Paul's competitive style of battling edged out Ash's, while heartwarming, unrealistic "I believe in my Pokemon so they will just win!" and forced Ash to come up with certain new combinations and tactics in their next full battle (Lily of the Valley Island Conference).

Ash vs Sawyer had a lot of emotion and hype behind it, especially when it came to Greninja vs Sceptile. I absolutely think it deserves the 2nd place here, but honestly the Japanese version was better solely because the Japanese opening theme that played during the battle fit way, way better than what they did in the English dub in my opinion.

I loved this battle because it was built up throughout the Sinnoh series. Gary vs Ash was also a nice slow build to their final battle, but honestly, Paul was such a cooler rival than Gary imo. I'm surprised this battle didn't make it top 5 or 3. Maybe it's just me, but I think people need to take off their nostalgia goggles and take a look at the bigger picture.

@@abelnightroad5162 Paul... was a nice rival, but he was cucked by where he was placed, I firmly say that Gladion is a better rival than Paul was, and this is coming from someone who hated the first half of Sun and Moon, Gladion's main strength however, came from how he was a worthy rival of Ash AFTER the badass he proved himself to be in Kalos, why Gladion isn't the perfect rival however is because the show could barely keep itself intact for the first half, but after Ash got his act together suddenly it felt reasonable, and when the strong Ash we used to know started to manifest all over again, be it a little late, but still there, Gladion being a rival had more impact, it didn't have to be conflicting ideals and the fact that Gladion wasn't written as an edgelord and only looked the part which served as nice intimidation and reminder of his own strength the battle felt greatly more epic and all the small rivalries going on within the battle chip out Electivire vs Infernape where the rest of the battle was... honestly just kinda spectacle...

I enjoyed seeing the list and of various fights throughout the 20+ years of the franchise. Maybe once Secrets of the Jungle come out, you can do top 10-20 Pokémon movies.
Other list ideas, best anime movies coming out next year to look forward to, top 10 long running anime (300 episodes minimum), top 10-20 kingdom hearts songs (now that melody of memory is out), and top 10-20 sequel anime (examples include Yashahime, UQ Holder, Boruto, etc)

Ash vs. Alain is still my personal favorite battle despite the circumstances. Ash vs. Gladion felt kind of lacking in comparison for a final League battle, but Ash vs. Kukui CERTAINLY made up for it.

Ash vs Alain had stakes for
1: Ash possibly winning the Kalos league.
2: Ash possibly beating Alain for the first time
3: The looming threat of Team Flare being triggered by this clash.
4: Alain reflecting his yearning for enjoying battles in his rough times while Ash does the same
@@MrBankaikenshin you don't understand what I mean, a battle doesn't need a stake about Ash gaining something it needs to mean something, Ash versus Sawyer meant a lot of things, so you're finally getting to prove Ash that he was worthy of being his equal Ash finally proving to saw her that he can win and overall it was a great way to end their development, another example is Ash versus Paul, Paul always beat Ash over and over again making Ash question right way of training and that's why when he beat Paul it felt earned it felt emotional and well deserved, even Ash versus kukui,kukui was always like a father figure to Ash and in that battle it was Ash's first time to show and grow from him being a champion he reflected back on his journey that took him all the way here and finally used all of that to win against kukui and tabu Koko, what I'm saying is that ask for salon did not have emotional mistakes I'm talking that the battle had no meaning to it and it doesn't have to be directly reference to Ash it has to mean that something important is one in the battle and I know it sucks for me to say this but that's the reason why ash versus the lawn is Laura on my list I'm not saying it's bad in fact I really love the battle the animation just that watching the battle something did not feel in it and that was the emotional stakes in the battle Ash and Alan just met and he called him rival sure there was stakes to the battle and Alan had real carriage development in both the main show and the spin-off just that Ash and Alan rivalry was never grown into much more and their rivalry really had no meaning to it it was just two people fighting for the hell of it

Their rivalry was a converging of their individual storylines.
Alain saw Ash as his coping method for enjoying Pokemon battles again. Which he himself stated numerous times in the series.While Ash saw him as a mountain to climb for the mastery of Ash-Greninja.
Hence why every interaction of theirs had a specific and peculiar purpose. Alain wanted to collect mega evolution energy and assume Greninja had some, then shifting into overall interest of the bond phenomenon. While Ash wanted to trigger the transformation and grow stronger with Greninja together.
So their rivalry already has a unique basis and purpose.
Then you throw in all of the Team Flare stuff, the tension of Alain's decision and Lysandre wanting to weaponize the bond phenomenon via his rivalry with Ash as the main catalyst for the plan.
He didn't need tension or real history. Shota didn't have any of that with Ash
Alain and Ash saw things in one another that they needed in order to rise above and continuously surpass, mixed in with their own personal situations. Especially in Alain's case.
That's why for me, I prefer Paul and Alain's rivalries with Ash much more than any other. Paul and Ash's rivalry was very character driven while Ash and Alain's was narrative driven. Both brought unique aspects to it that no rival has ever done before and their character relationships went well beyond just "Hey I'm strong, you're strong. Lets fight"
Sawyer and Ash's rivalry was rushed and ended in the Kalos League.
Ash and Alain's rivalry ended in the team flare arc. Which was not rushed, OLM didn't care about the Kalos League so Ash and Sawyer's rivalry ending there was extremely hollow. Especially when Sawyer ends up crying at the end and THEN ends up doing NOTHING in the Flare arc. That's disrespectful considering he was one of the stronger trainers there.

I'm disappointed that Ash's battle against Lt. Surge wasn't an honorable mention. It was that episode where Pikachu proved it can be as strong, and eventually stronger, than it's evolved form and wanted to continue getting strong as a Pikachu.
I might be biased towards the newer seasons, but i think alain and ash shld be higher up, as well as the battle with ash and gladion
#1 should've been Ash Greninja vs Mega Charizard (Ash vs Alain) from Pokemon XY&Z. That will always be the most hype battle in all of Pokemon history😎😎🤘🤘🤙🤙 I felt so bad that Ash lost in that match😩😭🙄
