Zhongli: The Listener

He remembered too much. That had been his ruin for as long as he could recall. He remembered far too much. And he never forgot. How heavy a burden it had proved to be over the course of his immortal lifespan.
"Mr. Zhongli, how are you these days?" Madame Ping's gentle voice startled him from his silence. "You've hardly touched your tea. And you're the one to have invited me here!" She said so in jest, he knew, but he could not bring himself to laugh along with her. His expression remained unchanged. He was far too tired.
Ping frowned. "What's troubling you, dear?" It was ridiculous for her to be calling him such words of endearment, as if she were an old woman comforting a grandson, especially so when realizing he was likely thousands of lifetimes older than she. But in this moment maybe she knew he needed such solace. Even gods could become lonely.
"Please, do not worry about me. I was merely...lost in my thoughts," he said, his voice gruff. He brought his cup to his lips and took a long sip, clearing his throat. "You need not concern yourself," he said with a tenderness so profound, it felt stolen from a place far inside himself.
"You are clearly bothered by something, dear." Ping chuckled once more, evidently entertained by his befuddled manners this evening. He was forgetting himself, acting strangely in her eyes, being childish in his gloom. He knew. He knew all of this.
And yet…
And yet?
Why had he asked her to tea? Because she was one of the few who might understand his sentiments?
"Is it me? Am I poor company?" she joked.
"I appreciate your concern. None of my troubles are your fault," he assured, but even as he did so, his voice trembled into a weak utterance. "It's me. Something is...wrong, inside me. I feel it inside my stomach and my chest and I don't know what to do."
Grieving. Grieving. Constantly grieving and missing and gazing back on times that no longer existed. He couldn't stop.
He felt as far removed as legend & myth, full of longing and reminiscence, attempting to find belonging in this new era of existence. But when he looked across his nation, he saw the ruins of places he once walked and the memories only he now held. And when he stood among the crowds of the city he had witnessed the very founding of, it was filled with faces and voices he did not recognize. And they, too, did not recognize him either. Memories filled his body as much as blood and bone. Sometimes, the past and the future and the present began to become so pressing on either side that he found little room for himself between them.
And when alone at night, standing in the still air, listening to the passing world, he found himself desiring for time to be pushed back. To no longer be made of memories, but to be living them again.
He desired to be there again. Again, and again. To hear their voices and laughter, to see their faces, to touch and hold themーthe one's whose names only he now knew. To be sat around the stone table of Aocang with his companions, to walk the foot trails of Guili Plains, to listen to their stories, to see them just once more.
Again. He begged everything again.
But the world remained as it always did, passing him by as if he were hardly a part of it at all.
He ended an era with his own two hands, forging a new one in place of it. A millennia had come and gone, the world so strangely altered now. Perhaps this was the imposition placed upon him by the natural order of this world. He would remain the same. And everyone, everything, would move on without him.
Who was a god meant to pray to, the way mortals did, when faced with despair? When faced with the horrors of being left behind? He had asked such a question of himself many, many times. He surmised that there might always be a whisper of loneliness running through him.
Unchanging stone, immovable earth...even one such as himself. Someday all of life may disappear. And yet the world went on despite it all. And he did too.
But a heart of stone is a heart nonetheless. When, he wondered, had the cracks begun to form?
He kept convincing himself that the end of his time has not yet come. Until one drizzly day, he stood motionless among the passing crowds, asking himself: have I already finished my duties? Am I...no longer needed?
"You remember too much," Madame Ping said, pulling him from his endless rumination. "It's exhausting work, holding onto all that. Carrying it everywhere, everyday, all the time." Her voice softened. "You deserve peace now, Morax. You've worked hard. So very hard. You should begin enjoying all that you’ve cultivated."
His chest tightened.
"Why don't you..." She trailed off as she considered her words. "Why don't you stop holding onto it all?"
He sat and sat, mulling over her question. The city bustled around them, voices and faces passing by in blurs. The scent of the sea drifted off the harbor, carrying a gentle breeze that sent the hanging lanterns dancing with golden light. The steaming tea reflected himself back at him. Was that okay? Could he truly do that? This was the world now, and although he grieved, might he also dare to hope?
This heavy weight that had been upon his shoulders for longer than he could bring himself to admit, where exactly was he meant to put it all?
"I would like to," he finally began to say, "...I will do as you suggest. I will try to put it all down."
Madame Ping smiled. "You are wise and your knowledge is vast, but you need not be told as much. You are already well aware. Speak about your thoughts and histories. People will listen. I promise you."
He remained to be the revered "listener", a keeper of history and bygones; among the last to remain of such times.

Perhaps it was finally time.
Perhaps it was finally time he shared his own story.
