The Dark Night of the Soul (in Castilian La noche oscura del alma) is a poem written in the 16th century by the Spanish poet and Christian mystic São João da Cruz and a treatise he later wrote, which consists of a commentary on the poem.

She took works of William Shakespeare as well, a special tribute to them, in my opinion
So I grew up listening and playing Hendrix and Pink Floyd and still to this day am in 3 bands gigging classic rock most weekends. After I designed up and built my new fretless guitar (to be electrically bowed, only) I wen't searching for music types that this very different guitar would be a compliment to. During my youtube searching I stumbled upon this video and recognized the name of the artist. Her music was always playing in bookstores where my wife and I would take our little children to read and pick out a book but, since being a book store the music volume was always kept very low. Still, there was something in me that the sound of her music had perked and I now would take the time to see who this artist was, afterall. After this song was over, I sat gazing at the screen asking myself "what did I just hear, and what just happened to me"? I literally played this song 12-15 times in a row waiting for the magic to wear off but, It only kept growing and growing on me. Somehow, Loreena McKennitt's music had awakened some musical sensibility in me that I hadn't even known was there. She is know one of my favorite artists, ever, and she is inadvertently guiding my direction with this new and very different guitar that I made and am very excited about where it will take me, musically. For a guy who has been playing classic rock for 40 years, this is a huge and extremely welcome, mystifying and refreshing departure. I am very grateful for Loreena for her dedication to her art and the inspiration and direction that has come my way as of a result. Thank you, and thank you again, Loreena. Philip Donovan This a 15th Century religious mystery poem set to music.
Written by a revered Spanish Catholic mystic, known to history as St. John of the Cross, or San Juan de la Cruz.
it's the story of a lost soul being reunited with God in the form of the story of a young woman who steals away from her home into the night to be united with her True Love,
a method by which many a plight was trothed, and many a marriage made in that time.
Especially if a girl's family didn't favor her marriage to the man she loved as in Shakespeare's play of the star-crossed true lovers
"Romeo and Juliet".
It's haunting beauty arises from the beautiful expression of a transcendent love
and the desperate night journey
to achieve that longed for union.
Loreena McKennitt's beautiful music and her ethereal voice do more than justice to the source material here; another marriage made in Heaven.

May, 1993 - Stratford ... have been reading through the poetry of 15th century Spain, and I find myself drawn to one by the mystic writer and visionary St. John of the Cross; the untitled work is an exquisite, richly metaphoric love poem between himself and his god.
It could pass as a love poem between any two at any time ...
His approach seems more akin to early Islamic or Judaic works in its more direct route to communication to his god ... I have gone over three different translations of the poem, and am struck by how much a translation can alter our interpretation.
Am reminded that most holy scriptures come to us in translation, resulting in a diversity of views.

Two notes on the lyrics printed in the CD-booklet:
The 2nd stanza has a misprint in the CD-booklet: the 2nd line reads "and by the secret star I quickly fled" but Loreena sings "... secret stair I ...".
See below for some remarks on this 'secret stair'.
Also the 5th line of the 6th stanza has a misprint: the CD-booklet says "From o'er the fortress walls" whereas Loreena sings "And by the fortress walls", but this is only a minor difference.
The secret stair
In a monastery, and St. John of the Cross probably lived in one, there is generally a night staircase, used by the monks to go to church at night from where they sleep (the dormitory), and in this way a monk could easily get out of the monastery at night. My first guess was that the poem refers to this night staircase and doorway with "secret stair". But fra. Emiel Abalahin, a Carmelite like John of the Cross, explained that the meaning is deeper:
"Dark Night of the Soul," like much of John's poetry, is based on "Song of Songs" from the Biblical Old Testament, and also on much of the romantic poetry and lyrics of Spanish popular balladry of that time, i.e., 16th century. The "secret stair" has less to do with a staircase in a monastery, and more to do with the popular theme of lovers meeting for a late night romantic tryst. In order for this to be possible, the young maiden of the song or poem would have to sneak out of the house, by the "secret stair."

Philip Donovan it’s been two years since you posted this . I too love hard rock Led Zeppelin , including Waites , Cash etc . I knew of her music and bought my friend a CD too . I watched this video and it seems like Loreena was singing to me actually singing to my soul. After watching the video I said to myself what just happened ? So I watched this over , over and over . At 73 years of age, it is
not long since I've come across Loreena, who has such a wonderful voice. Her music is so enthralling. I just can't believe what I have been missing.
She is her own genre. She is her own class. She is heaven's greatest angle.
She is the artist that connects me to the divine more than any artist and I've been loving music from the 1950's to 2019 and have a huge, huge music collection. Loreena is the artist I would choose if I could only hear only one artist if stranded on an island for all time.

No one has a voice like Lorenna McKennitt. You can always recognize it and love it.
As far as who wrote the lyrics, I don't care. She puts them to music and gives them real feeling. Knowing that she lost her fiancee to an accident helps me identify with the song, since I too am a widower.
I have been through my own "dark night of the soul". It is a lonely place, but also a place of testing. You live through it and become a whole person again or you give up, cave in, and become some miserable simulacrum of a human being.

I've loved Loreena's music since I first hear All Souls Night on the radio. I got the album not long after and still find her music very enjoyable.

I've followed Loreena for more than 25 years, fell in love with her harp first, her first release had no vocals; I knew her voice would be myztical, fell in love with her voice immediately, and longed a lovers kiss upon the lips of her melodies.
For several years I have listened to Loreena , With every song I feel the Magic her voice has always touched my soul I love her songs and voice.

VICTORTASSIETIGER This video reminds me of the concert I attended in Guelph in 1991. (play list obviously did not include this song) A classmate took me after his date backed out. When she entered the stage area, the lights were dimmed down, with only a spot light beaming down on her large "golden" hair. Her musicians were arranged around her on stage, dressed in black, except the drummer. There was a certain mystique about them.
I did not know her music, but it only took 10 seconds to really like what was played. As musicians, they were tight and very accomplished with a sound that mesmerizing and is almost consciousness altering (I am certain you feel similar) We were able to meet Loreena afterwards. She is such a calm, fantastic person. I have remained a life long fan.
If there ever is an angel on this earth it has to be Loreena and her beautiful voice, thanks for a wonderful career wishing you and your loved one a merry Christmas and a happy new year!
She has an otherworldly beauty, both in her art and her person. It's not contrived or forced, but seems to come naturally. That's a rare thing in these days of commercialization and pretentiousness. Thank God.

What a remarkable girl. Between listening and watching her perform this piece I'm just so smitten and struck by Loreena. Her videos are so very good but don't contain enough of Loreena herself, but rather very tasteful and artsy images of this and that. I'd much rather just see her after watching this.
