You need to hear her song, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face ... it's so sweet. It'll make you cry it's sooooo good. It's similar to this one in that she's describing someone who has affected her deeply, and I love it deeply, with my soul !!! Here's a link ... (th-cam.com/video/VqW-eO3jTVU/w-d-xo.html ). It was used in the movie, Play Misty For Me with Clint Eastwood, Donna Mills and Jessica Walters, and it gutted me, then and ever since.

A singer/ songwriter writer, Lori Lieberman, was asked by a friend to come and see this singer she had been hearing about. She was so moved by the man’s performance that she went home and started writing this song, later finishing it with two collaborators. Lori recorded the song, and Roberta Flack heard it played while on a plane flight, and knew she had to record her own version. The singer Lori Lieberman wrote the song about was someone you have reacted to on your show, Don McLean

He is signing about trials and heartbreak and she is uncomfortable because she feels he is describing her experiences so intimately that she wonders if everyone else "realizes" he is singing about her secrets. Meanwhile, the singer just continues to entertain, oblivious of her. The Killing me softly is how she is reliving the pain he is singing about.

The lyrics of this song was written by Norman Gimbel and Lori Lieberman, who was inspired to write the song following a performance by Don McLean. The music was by Charles Fox. The song was written in 1971 and was covered by many but it hit a resonant note with the public in 1973 when Roberta Flack did such a wonderful job of performing it. Just a great song to kick back and enjoy a great relaxing groove...wine or whiskey optional.

This song was inspired by Don McLean’s performance of Empty Chairs at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Singer/songwriter Lori Lieberman was in the audience and had an intense reaction to the song. She cried through the performance and wrote notes on a napkin. Afterwards she called her boyfriend lyricist/manager, Norman Gimbel, and shared her notes. They collaborated with Charles Fox and this beauty was the result❤️

    A little history:
In 1971 Don McLean’s performance of “Empty Chairs” at the Troubadour sparked an intense emotional experience that would quickly change the path of Lori Lieberman’s life. Lieberman connected so deeply with that performance that she began to write her feelings down on a tear-stained napkin.
After the show, Lieberman called her lover and lyricist/manager, Norman Gimbel to share her inspiration and the bud that was “Killing Me Softly with His Song” began to blossom. Gimbel, Lieberman, and Gimbel’s business partner, Charles Fox, then collaborated on the composition. In a 1973 interview with New York Daily News, Gimbel said: “She told us about this strong experience she had listening to McLean. I had a notion this might make a good song… We talked it over several times, just as we did for the rest of the numbers we wrote for this album and we all felt it had possibilities.” Lieberman’s poetic inspiration was shortly set to music by Fox but supported lyrically by Gimbel. It was Lieberman, however, that paid attention to the lyrical and structural integrity of her first-hand sentimental experience.
Soon after, Lieberman recorded “Killing Me Softly With His Song” on her self titled album for Capitol Records, but was given no credit as a writer, costing her both financial and musical recognition for one of her most well-known works. While recalling her initial relationship with the track, Lieberman explained: “I remember feeling about the song that it was good and I liked it. I don’t think I loved it at all. It almost embarrassed me because I didn’t want anybody to view me as a groupie who had gone to, you know, a concert. I just didn’t want to be seen like that.”
The song continued to gain popularity as it was later covered by Roberta Flack in 1973, earning her multiple Grammys, and the Fugees in 1996, topping the charts internationally. Still, Lieberman received little to no recognition for the track itself, finding her contributions discredited by Gimbel and Fox. Gimbel even went as far as to demand that Don McLean remove a reference to Lieberman’s participation in the song’s composition from his website.

Roberta is a jazz singer, and her song was used in the story about a stalker that wanted Clint Eastwood who was a jazz announcer at the local radio station. Eastwood is a true Jazz lover who introduced Robert Flack and her voice to the world. They had to reissue her album with this song because it was out of issue.

As teachers, you might appreciate that she was a junior high music and English teacher before she gained fame as a singer. I think she was a classical pianist also, earning degrees from Howard University. And at 85, she's still with us. Other songs of hers that I love: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," "Tonight We Celebrate My Love," "The Closer I Get to You" which others are also recommending.

Like others are saying, other great radio hits by Roberta Flack are "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (1972), "Where is the Love?" (1972, with Donny Hathaway), and "The Closer I Get to You" (1977, with Donny Hathaway). The Fugees' hiphop-ish 1996 cover of this 1973 song is also great.

Lori Lieberman saw Don Mclean at the Troubadour and heard “Empty Chairs”. She felt Don had “opened her journal” with that tune and so on a tear stained napkin she started writing this song. She would finish it with Norman Gimbel and Charlie Fox. You two listened to Don Mclean’s American Pie a few months ago.

This song is about a girl at a concert sitting in the audience & she thinks the artist is singing directly to her. The lyrics are co-author Lori Lieberman's response to seeing a young Don McLean (American Pie) perform, and the resulting feeling that he was singing directly to her about her innermost thoughts and secrets. I felt all flushed with fever, embarrassed by the crowd
I felt he'd found my letters and read each one out loud
I prayed that he would finish, but he just kept right on...

Roberta Flack was such an outstanding classical piano player that she got a full scholarship to Howard at age 15, and also majored in voice. She was a music teacher in the D.C. area and played jazz clubs at night until she was well-known enough to tour with Marvin Gaye (also from D.C.) and get a record deal. in 1973 she won a Grammy for ""The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and then the next year she won for "Killing me Softly". She also recorded a duets album with legendary soul singer Donny Hathaway, the biggest hit of which was "Where is the Love". '
This song was inspired by Don McLean (of 'American Pie" and "Vincent" fame) singing his heartbreaking song "Empty Chairs" at a show in L.A. in the late 60s.

This song speaks to me. The imagery of hearing someone you have never met sing a song that encompasses your life, good, bad, or indifferent.
I saw you have reacted to Anne Murray, an accomplished Canadian singer. You might consider her song “a little good news”
An artist I didn’t see on your page, that is powerful, and fun, and sad, that I would recommend is Sawyer Brown “Some Girls Do”, “All these years”, “the Walk”, and “Café on the Corner”. This songs range from fun, to mistakes, to life passing by, to hard times, but in a poignant way. Beautiful music.
