    Just as a heads up to everyone watching this video and thinking that they'll play the Ruy Lopez and trap all their opponents and win instantly. I've been playing the Ruy Lopez for 5 years now and it's actually a great positional opening with super solid fundamentals. You're not going to trap people. But you will get very dynamic and interesting middle games that will improve your overall chess! Use this video as inspiration for picking up the opening, but only a little bit of it near the end will actually be relevant to your games.

    • @michaelf8221
      @michaelf8221 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @AdarshS PVishnu it's one of the only openings I've stuck with the entire time! I learned it as basically a beginner (after a brief experimentation with the Italian and king's gambit), and am now around 2300 lichess.

    • @TransparentEclipse
      @TransparentEclipse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@michaelf8221 maybe at 2300 these traps probably don’t work, but at like 1600 down I could easily see most ppl falling for half of the traps in this video

    • @michaelf8221
      @michaelf8221 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TransparentEclipse The issue isn't that people won't fall into the traps. The issue is that all of these traps are in sidelines that nobody ever plays. So you're unlikely to even get near the trap. If you're close to it, then yeah at 1600 I'm sure your opponents could fall into it. Getting there is the issue!

    • @TransparentEclipse
      @TransparentEclipse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@michaelf8221 I mean, I assumed this was implied, that u would reach the position, but even if it wasn’t implied there are only so many lines in the ruy Lopez, and most of the common moves a6 kf6 etc have plenty of traps in them, so I doubt it would be impossible or even unlikely u could reach these positions more often than not as both white and black, especially at lower elos where ppl just try to emulate opening theory without actually knowing how to play the position.

    The thing I love most about Eric is how he not only shows how to play certain openings as white/black, and the traps you can do, but also goes over different lines as the opposite colour (e.g. black in Ruy Lopez, or white in a Stafford), and shows how you can defend against those traps, and also gives you traps you can use against it.
    And I actually do feel inspired to go and try the Ruy Lopez in future games now.

    There's also a fishing pole variation in the Modern Steinitz which Valeri Yandemirov often used: 3...a6 4.Ba4 d6 5.0-0 Bg4 6.h3 h5., where White can fall for 7.hxg4 hxg4 8.Nh2 Qh4. I've had that and the Noah's Ark Trap with Black on several occasions. (And I agree that the c3 gambit is a good antidote to the Noah's Ark Trap). Really liked your coverage of the trap against the ...Nge7 line (with the knight/bishop mates after "Oh no my queen!"), I wasn't aware of that one.

    Also: at 48:20, the terms 'poisonous' and 'trap' are extremely misleading, because after Nxd4 and Bd5, Black can protect the Knight on c6 with Qd7, and after Bxe4 - then follows d5, attacking the Bishop. Now you can sac that Bishop or retreat, if you retreat, then e4 will follow and now you'll lose the Knight (unless you prefer losing your Queen)

    5:28. There is a clutch move in this position which I bet only a few players will find, though I'm only a 600 elo player. Instead of Nxe5, you play pawn to g2 which disallows the move Qh4, threatening mate. Its true that you end up losing a knight, but atleast you didn't get checkmated meaning the game continues equally in material to both sides (Black and white). But if you are good enough you'll surely end up winning material and hopefully also winning the game later on.

    • @kruksog
      @kruksog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't play the Ruy Lopez if you're sub ~1500! It's a grinding, positional opening. Also, like the other guy said, at 400 you don't need to know openings per se, just opening principles.
      If you really want to use a traditional opening, learn the Vienna and the Scotch.
