While Rick is definitely a massive jerk, his abuse towards Tom is about on par with the Maid in terms of severity, meaning that he never goes so far to the point where it stops being funny. Plus, whenever he does abuse Tom, most of the time, the latter will merely react with an annoyed glare than anything. Along with that, he can at least be nice sometimes, like at the end of the episode "What a pain" where he admits to have missed both Spike and Tom - notice the way he says "I missed you two, *even YOU, cat."* And lastly, he at least does get his sweet desserts in quite a few episodes, so you don't have to worry about him getting away with it.

Oh no. Don’t act as though Jerry is innocent here. Even Jerry was surprisingly horrible at times. He’s more than happy to throw Tom into these situations taking advantage of Clint’s ignorance. He even joins in on the abuse after Tom gets beaten senseless. He may be hiding his face from Tom’s abuse too afraid to watch, but that doesn’t mean he feels remorseful for Tom. After Tom gets beaten up in the fishing episode, Jerry is more than happy to assist Clint’s humiliating abuse of him. And in the barbecue episode, he watches as Tom is tied up, then hooks him to the back of a car for him to be helplessly towed away. This Jerry was just Sick and Manipulative. He wasn’t nearly as empathetic or caring as the Jerry we knew and were familiar with from MGM.
@@aungpyaesone5613 Mommy Two Shoes would lose her temper with Tom on the odd occasion, but she actually Cared, and she did still give Tom praise when he earned it. The worst she did was throw Tom out of the house and beat him with a broom (which is a much more tame choice than what Clint used being to beat him more violently and ruthlessly). She knew what Tom was capable of sustaining while Clint had no remorse.

At least with Mammy two shoes, yes she’d sometimes be rough on Tom but she still genuinely cared about him as a cat and a bit like a child. THIS GUY not only abuses tom in a pretty brutal fashion but he often SMILES when he does it, which gives a clear indication that he’s a terrible person

Clint Clobber did things that Mammy Two Shoes would never have even thought of. While Mammy was strict, and took no nonsense from Tom, at most she would just give him a verbal scolding, and/or threaten to throw him out. Even when she did, it was never permanent. Clint, on the other hand, straight up abused Tom.
Makes me wonder about the mindset of the one who created the character. T&J's slapstick violence gets to the extreme, but Clint crosses the line too much.
Since Sorry Safari was Clint's last appearance, I have a theory of what happened to him. After he and Tom were taken away, the animals learned of how nasty Clint was towards Tom and how he took pleasure in abusing him. Tom and Jerry and released and allowed to go home. Clint, on the other hand, is forced to stay behind and the animals decide to turn the tables on him by hunting and beating him up any chance they get. Clint spends the rest of his life running in fear and being hunted by the creatures he loves to hurt. He'll never get a break, never be rescued, and is doomed to be trapped in the jungle for the rest of his miserable life.
Or they put him in an asylum. And whatever country he was in you can bet the conditions were medieval and makes Victorian asylums look progressive in comparison.
He and Jeannie will deserve that. Because Jeannie is worst babysitter always loves lying and framing Tom and Jerry as "baby nappers". Police believed Tom and Jerry after they saw that the baby is crawling on the streets. She and Clint Clobber will be hunted by the creatures who are been abused or framed for the rest of their life.
I remember watching these episodes late at night on Boomerang and feeling like I was watching some sort of lost episode creepypasta. I'm glad other people feel the same way about these episodes, because these were just disturbing
I watched an episode where the cat tuned into a dog and other dog turn into a cat so which me makes scared as a kid and Tom and abuse by some orange random cat that acts like a dog, to this day it still scares me the heck

This era is just horrible. The graphic quality itself is a major drawback compared to HB, but basically anything else is also wrong. The sounds, effects, the unreasonable brutality, and the character behaviours.

To be honest, he has suffered this abuse from spike and two shoes, so honestly, Clint clobber isn’t the only one, but I agree, this abuse is too inappropriate for a cartoon, but there are fucked up people that actually find this funny.
I recently rewatched T&J episodes from 1940 to 1975. I have a sentiment to the Gene Deitch era, it reminds me of Eastern European cartoons that I am familiar with. However, upon rewatching the series now and comparing it to Hanna-Barbera or even Chuck Jones shorts, I see that it is a completely different cartoon series. It's worth noting that Gene Deitch himself expressed dislike for the original T&J cartoons, as he found them to be excessively violent. It's ironic that he went on to create this horrendous character.
Well, this era in particular of Tom and Jerry was indeed made behind the iron curtain. The names on the credits are all fake american-like names to disguise the original Czech names of the people in the studio
@@danielfarkasatzel1952 I had a teacher in 6th grade that showed us some cartoons from there. I put 2 and 2 together and figured that this was czechoslovakian animation.
Despite her controversial character, Mammy Two Shoes was a much better written and much more sympathetic character than this utter moron! This guy just loses his temper over slight issues and shenanigans Tom goes through. Mammy, whilst stern, strict, and sometimes aggressive, just wanted some peace restored to her home, and her discipline towards Tom was just that, discipline, not abusing for the fun of it, like how this guy was! These three cartoons, particularly Down and Outing and Sorry Safari, just make me extremely pissed off! They're not funny, they're just far too mean spirited, and it's really just watching bullying being displayed in cheap animation.
@@davidmlbmotorsportsfan I think Deitch was told that Tom's owner HAD to be short tempered, stern and overall incredibly strict. But if you really stop and think about it, Clint was really just exploiting and abusing Tom for fun. For example, if you notice in the last clip from Sorry Safari, when he jams Tom's paws into the basket when he's looking for Jerry, it immediately cuts to a shot of Clint smirking with pleasure almost, which is clearly something only a dictator or a psychopath would do! Compare that to whenever Mammy would thwack Tom with her broomstick handle. Those moments were written funnier and worked a whole lot better because Tom was written either as Mammy's disobedient son or her lazy husband as supposed to her house pet, and, if you ask me, Mammy clearly disciplined Tom out of love. She loved her pet, but she had to show her pet consequences for "bad behaviour" (even though Jerry usually started the commotion). Clint, in my eyes, NEVER disciplined Tom out of love, and the animators of the Deitch films made it quite clear that he was taking some sort of pleasure from harming his pet, and that's probably why the Deitch films just don't work.

@@davidmlbmotorsportsfan I have now! How I would describe the Deitch productions is basically a one sided, poorly written attempt to revamp two fantastic characters. There ARE old cartoons where Jerry is quite unlikably irritating, but those were usually pretty rare, Jerry was actually a cute little character who was just trying to get on with life, and with the cartoons where he does become agitating and obnoxious is the cartoons when Tom actually deserves it. Take Professor Tom for example, Tom isn't actually THAT likeable in that cartoon, since his role is that of the strict school instructor as supposed to the lazy but mischievous character we know him as. There really is no villain or protagonist in these cartoons, same with the Coyote and the Road Runner, or in any Sylvester cartoon. But with the Deitch cartoons, Tom is pretty much Clint, and occasionally Jerry's boxing sack. I refuse to believe that in Down and Outing, Jerry wanted to go with Clint for a holiday, but for more excuses to mess with Tom. But even in that cartoon, when Jerry sees Clint roughly handling Tom, his expression is pretty much, "Oh, wow! Poor fella!" which indicates that even Clint's form of physicality is too much for him! I'd imagine if Deitch rewrote Spike the Bulldog and Butch the Cat in his cartoons, they would take one look at Clint's behaviour and go, "Nope!" And it's even more unfair since Tom doesn't really do anything most of the time in Deitch's productions. Usually in earlier cartoons, take The Missing Mouse and Jerry's Cousin for example, Tom does start taking pleasure in bullying little Jerry, thus, when he gets his comeuppance in the end, it's more satisfying and funny.

Many people say that Deitch is not blameable, since not only was he not a fan of Tom and Jerry, but he was only on a tight budget, and couldn't bring the duo back as better characters or place them in better stories for cinema audiences to watch. The money issue I can understand, but I think Deitch just didn't have the sort of respect nessacary to make these thirteen revamps. Respect and knowledge of something are definitely two things that you need to make sure you have when making something like a revamp, reboot or even just a fan product, and I understand the Czech Republic and the United States worked totally differently and allowed themselves to use opposite forms of entertainment and jokes, but if that was the case, why did Deitch even bother at all? I love Deitch, but I just don't think he gave enough of a sweat drop to make to a successor to one of the most iconic pieces of vintage animation. Chuck Jones' productions, in my opinion, whilst not entirely "perfect", are still a major step up from Deitch's patheticness. All because Jones actually gave a crap, put in effort and made sure that he had good writing. I personally loved the more Dr. Seuss inspired design Jones was working with at that time, and it gave both characters a rather interesting but really fitting redesign, and I believe he started using that style with the Grinch and his Bugs Bunny work from the 70s and 80s. And to give Jones credit, he did make the characters sympathetic again. Tom, whilst deemed as more menacing, angry, and overall scarier, was occasionally written as what he's known as usually, lazy but mischievous. And Jerry, for the most part, was rewritten back into the cute little roommate figure we also know him as.
I remember only seeing the one at 3:04 with the guy and personally I thought It was enjoyable to watch and I even laughed for like an hour when the guy got so mad he had to count to ten..I still remember enjoying the episode regardless.

Clint is a horrific and downright monstrous character and he makes Spike look like Jesus by comparison. He's just a one dimensional pet abuser with serious anger problems. And when Tom does stuff like ruining his meal, or injuring him by accident, Clint takes punishing Tom to the extreme. The way he smiles when abusing Tom shows he gets some sick kick outta torturing him, he comes off as a complete sadist. But Jerry in this era is just as bad. He's a sadistic and malicious jerk who tortures Tom for no reason and he always ends up winning, despite being the villain in this era. And he goes outta his way to do things that'll get Clint to rage out at Tom and be as malicious as possible. If Clint knew of Jerry's existence, knowing him, he'd be friends with the mouse as they both love to make Tom's life hell.
I'll never forget how much of an a$$hole Jerry was in Calypso Cat. There were episodes where Jerry tried to sabotage Tom's relationships with other female cats, but he was at least more playful(?) and devious with his approaches. And in one episode, Tom and Jerry were actually happy to be frenemies again, at least until Jerry found himself a new mate (hypocritical, I know). In Calypso Cat, Jerry was going out of his way to ruin Tom's chance of having a love life because he couldn't handle Tom keeping his eyes off him for *1 SECOND.*
@@jordan-the-hound2323 It's hard to say who's more cruel, Jerry in this era, or Clint. Jerry's an unlikable sadist who lives to make Tom's life a living hell. I would say he's far more malicious in "High Steaks" and "Down and Outing", he made Clint his greatest weapon and went out of his way to enrage Clint just to see the abusive prick brutally beat Tom to a pulp and laugh his butt off. The only episodes where Jerry felt nicer was in "Buddies Thicker Than Water" where he saved Tom's life and got him out of the cold and his revenge was more justified given Tom selfishly threw him out in the cold, and "Landing Stripling" where he befriends that bird and helps him avoid being eaten by Tom.

The fact is that Gene Deitch and John Kricfalusi have one thing in common. The first Clint Clobber from TerryToons is the first Ren Hoek from the 90s show and the second Clint Clobber from Tom & Jerry is the second Ren Hoek from APC. Coincidence, don't you think...
John K. is as bad in real life as Clint was in animated form. John is a child predator who was accused of grooming two girls under the age of 18 in the 1990's. He was finally outed in 2018. Gene Deitch in real life was more refined as a human being. He just wasn't crazy about "Tom & Jerry", he couldn't use Clint Clobber's name at MGM (due to Terrytoons owning the name by copyright), and his Czech animators were in a cold-war era predicament when Czech law was ruled by Communists. They had a limited budget (which is why the Deitch T&J's look so cheap) and his animators reportedly viewed only six "Tom & Jerry" films by Hanna & Barbera before working on the assignment given to Deitch by producer Bill Snyder in 1961. So even Deitch's animators didn't know much about Tom & Jerry when they worked on the series. There were only 13 cartoons made from 1961-62, so it was a take the money and run deal. When Chuck Jones took over for Deitch in 1963, his budgets were higher, and his animation was less crude, even though his humor for Tom & Jerry was more like The Roadrunner & The Coyote than it was Tom & Jerry by Hanna & Barbera. As Jones once stated to Leonard Maltin in 1980 in the book "Of Mice & Magic" "Bill & Joe would have as much trouble with The Roadrunner & Coyote as I did with Tom & Jerry." "Our personalities for the characters were just too different."
We can all agree he's an animal abuser to Tom Cat. I really hate that owner. As a kid, I used to think he's funny for what he's doing to Tom but now that I'm older, what he did is animal cruelty. That evil madman Tom's owner from the Gene Deitch era is definitely the most hated character in the entire Tom and Jerry franchise. He is always being very cruel, brutal, abusive and violent towards poor Tom for no reason. Jerry is definitely blaming himself for having Tom tortured and beaten as well. He's definitely more of a villain 🦹 than a hero. Sorry Safari is only the Tom and Jerry cartoon where Tom's owner finally gets his comeuppance. Due to negative reception from fans, Tom's owner is never seen or heard from again after Sorry Safari. Not even in any of future Tom and Jerry cartoons. Good riddance to that abusive jerk! He never reprimands Tom even when he didn't do anything, unlike the other characters/owners, but always harms him right away. Tom's other owners, in comparison, usually throw him out of the house temporarily, kick him, or hit him with a broom as a non-violent punishment even if it's mostly undeserved. His role as Tom's owner, in general, is also horribly mismatched, similar in vein to the infamous and notorious Daffy Duck/Speedy Gonzales pairings of the DePatie-Freleng/Format Films/Seven-Arts eras of Looney Tunes, as his only purpose in the Gene Deitch-era is just to torture Tom for no discernible reason whatsoever (as with many other one-off human characters introduced in this era). Unlike all the characters that beat up Tom throughout the franchise (especially Spike the Bulldog), he ends up reducing the poor cat into a nervous wreck which is often very sad and devastating to watch and makes his violent punishments all the more unforgivable, such as Tom actually crying at the end of Down and Outing, and Tom being shown to be extremely scared and phobic of him in every cartoon the cat appears with him in the worst possible way, especially in both Down and Outing and the ending of High Steaks.
Unpopular opinion: I honestly think the era wouldn’t have been universally hated as much if he was toned down a bunch to where he just a regular guy with a short temper rather than a complete psychopath, or at the very least suffered some kind of horrific but satisfying karma at the end all his appearances.

It's okay, baby... He ain't gonna hurt you anymore... Clint Clobber: Ow... Somebody call an ambulance... Mammy Two Shoes: Nah, suffer in silence... 😡 Clint Clobber: You're insufferable... There's a PSA commercial where the dad abuses the cartoon kid in the most cartoonish way possible. It ends with the kid turning into live-action, who is already dead.

I still feel bad with what Gene Deitch (Director of these Shorts) went through, NGL. There's apparently a thing that Deitch didn't want to animate this as he was pressured to do so. Deitch and his Crew also didn't had the same Budget like with the previous Cartoons, hence the Animation being rather unique yet off-ish. To top it off, Deitch is the only one whom has seen how Tom and Jerry Designs look like among his whole Crew. Unsure if verified, but I did heard this is apparently what happened. I'll admit, Deitch did had a few good Shorts, as the Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit and Its Greek to Me-ow Short is part of my top favourite Shorts among all of them.
Only "very good" things in Deitch era was "the cartoon kit". Greek to me-ow is not that good, but not too bad compared to the rest of the Deicth episodes.
If this was not a cartoon, then the car would had scratched out his owner’s eyes so that he would be blind and not be able to see the cat to be able to abuse and enjoy the abuse.
Sorry, but Spike was hitting Tom moderately, although painfully, as if teaching him a lesson. On the other hand, that guy mistreated poor Tom in a genuine and inhuman way. At the very least, it's satisfying that that wretch never appeared again in later chapters, although it's a shame that it's never been seen or mentioned that he received his maximum sentence for animal abuse.
He actually wanted to save the grill instead of Tom. He only hit him because he threw the grill into the pool because if it were up to him Tom could die at will.
I like how Clint is even more hated than Jerry, despite Jerry being portrayed as a villain to some fans. Personally, I only think Jerry is an a$$ when he takes advantage of Tom being threatened (even with death) by his enemies. Otherwise… the mouse is too witty to be the villain/he’s not the villain.🤔 Honestly… if people wanna hate someone on T&J, the Jerry haters should watch the Gene Deitch Collection of T&J and look at Clint.😆

Say what you will about the rest of Tom's owners from Mammy Two Shoes to who owns him now. They legit had a reason to act stern and punish Tom whether it's his constant failures at catching Jerry to just literally messing up the house. Here's a fun fact (or not) for y'all: the blatant animal abuse committed by this owner, and to an extent most of Tom's OTHER owners (but this particular owner deserves special mention)... was actually _not_ considered such way back in the 60s, because what is considered animal abuse nowadays was actually commonplace back then: indeed, the abuse that the fat owner inflicts on Tom was actually treated as *funny.* Yeah, let THAT one sink in...
Really now? I can understand hitting an animal with a broom when they misbehave as a more outdated form of punishment, but what Clint does to Tom in these shorts would kill a cat in real life. You do even half of the stuff Clint did and the animal would be lucky to survive.
Gene Deitch wasn't even allowed to use the name "Clint Clobber" in these MGM cartoons, since Terrytoons owned the copyrighted name to the character, so he went unnamed in these cartoons.

I come from the family with mother who has irritation for argument and suffers from double personality disorder. There's a reason why i never tell her the price for anything because she's nagging me with her bs. Told her once about burger price i bought and ate and she's like i threw that money for useless. There are always pointless arguments with my parents and reason why some move out either because they don't like them or because of better life somewhere with keeping in touch with them. When they can't handle anymore they throw heavy arguments. Right woman wouldn't marry the bfstard after few months neither would man be married with bystard as well. I don't get why are everyone rushing with marriage. Too many limitations and restrictions. Women can't smile to friends without man being jealous or other way around. Jealous and anger is main issue in everyone.

The one your referring to is the Terrytoons version of Clint. The Terrytoons and Tom and Jerry versions are completely different as the Terrytoons version is kind.
Even as a kid, I was legitimately scared of this man, knowing that he will hurt Tom in a second. I was painfully aware that he had anger issues, when I was very little. While I do like the Tom and Jerry cartoons from this era, it's only towards the episodes that Clint isn't featured in. (Excluding Dicky Moe).
When Tom screamed in the old shows you'll know it wasn't serious and you know Tom is gonna be alright in the next scene. But here you can tell Tom is never gonna be alright after the trauma this guy put him through! If Roger rabbits universe existed and Tom and jerry were forced to work with this guy like that to get by, Then you can know for sure that Tom Cat probably had a very traumatic experience he'd wouldn't talk about to other cartoon characters off set (Since his contract forbids him to talk while in character on set)
The abuse he gives towards Tom gives off the same vibes as the abuse Eddy’s brother gives towards Eddy in the Ed, Edd and Eddy finale. Both even smile when giving the abuse.

I’m so glad the owner got his comeuppance in “Sorry Safari” and was replaced by a female owner in the following short, “Buddies Thicker Than Water” and the series got a lot better when Chuck Jones took over.

If Gene Deitch made one more Tom and Jerry cartoon after "Carmen Get It" before the franchise was given to Chuck Jones, he should make an episode where Clint gets sent to jail for abusing Tom and the female owner (from "Buddies Thicker Than Water") feels bad got Tom after he was physically abused in "Down and Outing", "High Steaks" and "Sorry Safari", becomes Tom's new owner and it would be a sequel to the three shorts Clint appeared in and a prequel to "Buddies Thicker Than Water".

Looney Tunes made a version of Papa Bear who is short-tempered, abusive, violent and hates his family, mostly his son a lot. He did tried to commit suicide in one cartoon because he hates his family so much and considered life with them is a fate a hell lot worse than death.
I remember watching these shorts on tv when airing re-runs of tom and jerry when i was younger. I was always confused why these shorts were so drastically different, and the jarring sound design didn't help either. For the longest time, i thought that these shorts were just fever dreams. Of all three of those cartoons, “High Steaks” was the first cartoon with the fat owner in them, it aired on Cartoon Network around 2002-03 and then I remember seeing the first part of “Sorry Safari” around 2004 when it aired on Boomerang and only saw the first few parts of it and stopped watching it after the owner yells “that’s my gun! Give it to me!” After seeing Tom stuck in the tree with his nose stuck in a gun.

I remember this guy. For a long time, I never knew his name nor did I know if he even had a name. Recently, I started looking him up to find out if he had a name and now I do know his name, or the name they implied he was given. Tom has had plenty of owners throughout the original Tom and Jerry series, some of them were more verbal than physical, it would seem that Tom would be lucky if the owner was verbal but not physical but even if the owner was just verbal and non-physical the verbal pain is just as bad as the physical kind. But when they got physical, from what I can remember, any of the owners that got physical ether hit Tom with a broom or shewed him outside with a broom to leave him outside for an hour so the owner could calm themselves or something, sometimes possibly hitting him with a newspaper, my memory on what sort of physical confrontations the owners did to Tom is a bit hazy since it's been so long since I last watched the show. But I remember very little of what sort of physical abuse they did to him when angered. But out of all of the owners Tom had. None of them were as bad as Clint Clobber. Clint Clobber was the worst when one of Tom's owners got angry at him and reacted as such. The previous ones were still physical but none of them were as worse as this guy. And Jerry is to blame for what Tom went through when his owner was Clint Clobber and Jerry found it amusing. This had to be the worst that Tom went through. Clint Clobber probably never had kids nor did he marry. With his anger problem. The women he possibly dated probably didn't want to be with someone so violent, he'd probably make the worst dad or husband to anyone. Someone should've called the police on him for animal cruelty.

@@harvir6167 I fail to see how Tom makes it worse. Tom was trying to get Jerry as Jerry was basically teasing, taunting or bullying Tom to get him angry and he knows Tom is an easy target. And Tom meant to go for Jerry, not to go for Clint Clobber or make something turn into a disaster. Most of the time, I side with Jerry when Tom is the one causing the problems in the first place. But there are other times when the one who fired the first shot was Jerry. And when Tom is warned by an owner or warned by Spike if he did anything again and he would be met with a punishment. Jerry would overhear that and he'd do everything in his power to make sure that punishment happened to Tom. So basically, the one at fault often shifts between Tom and Jerry. But in this case. Jerry is the one causing Tom to look bad when Tom did nothing to warrant it.

Hate to be that guy, but the fat owner is not actually Clint Clobber, the character that Deitch had created for Terrytoons. Deitch himself confirmed they were two different characters (although they look alike enough that you might be forgiven for mixing them up). The main difference between the characters is that Clint Clobber was often portrayed as a jerk with a heart of gold, while Tom's owner in the Deitch era *very much **_isn't_*
I agree with you. In "Man's Best Friend" and "Dog Show" from "The Ren and Stimpy Show" actually George Liquor was a much better owner than this asshole.
"Ren...Coolest...APC" Don't even say that jokingly! On APC, Ren is 100% like Clint in Tom & Jerry. He torture animals, almost kill Mr. Horse, act like a jerk and even tortures Stimpy (like Clint tortures Tom) for pleasure and not for punishment. The only difference that exists is precisely the fact that Ren suffered a lot in the show and took revenge on the APC, even that doesn't change his bad actions. Clint at TerryToons never suffered to make anyone suffer in the future.

While Rick is definitely a massive jerk, his abuse towards Tom is about on par with the Maid in terms of severity, meaning that he never goes so far to the point where it stops being funny. Plus, whenever he does abuse Tom, most of the time, the latter will merely react with an annoyed glare than anything. Along with that, he can at least be nice sometimes, like at the end of the episode "What a pain" where he admits to have missed both Spike and Tom - notice the way he says "I missed you two, *even YOU, cat."* And lastly, he at least does get his sweet desserts in quite a few episodes, so you don't have to worry about him getting away with it.

Oh no. Don’t act as though Jerry is innocent here. Even Jerry was surprisingly horrible at times.
He’s more than happy to throw Tom into these situations taking advantage of Clint’s ignorance. He even joins in on the abuse after Tom gets beaten senseless. He may be hiding his face from Tom’s abuse too afraid to watch, but that doesn’t mean he feels remorseful for Tom.
After Tom gets beaten up in the fishing episode, Jerry is more than happy to assist Clint’s humiliating abuse of him. And in the barbecue episode, he watches as Tom is tied up, then hooks him to the back of a car for him to be helplessly towed away.
This Jerry was just Sick and Manipulative. He wasn’t nearly as empathetic or caring as the Jerry we knew and were familiar with from MGM.

Since Sorry Safari was Clint's last appearance, I have a theory of what happened to him. After he and Tom were taken away, the animals learned of how nasty Clint was towards Tom and how he took pleasure in abusing him. Tom and Jerry and released and allowed to go home. Clint, on the other hand, is forced to stay behind and the animals decide to turn the tables on him by hunting and beating him up any chance they get. Clint spends the rest of his life running in fear and being hunted by the creatures he loves to hurt. He'll never get a break, never be rescued, and is doomed to be trapped in the jungle for the rest of his miserable life.

I remember watching these episodes late at night on Boomerang and feeling like I was watching some sort of lost episode creepypasta. I'm glad other people feel the same way about these episodes, because these were just disturbing

This era is just horrible. The graphic quality itself is a major drawback compared to HB, but basically anything else is also wrong. The sounds, effects, the unreasonable brutality, and the character behaviours.

I recently rewatched T&J episodes from 1940 to 1975. I have a sentiment to the Gene Deitch era, it reminds me of Eastern European cartoons that I am familiar with. However, upon rewatching the series now and comparing it to Hanna-Barbera or even Chuck Jones shorts, I see that it is a completely different cartoon series.
It's worth noting that Gene Deitch himself expressed dislike for the original T&J cartoons, as he found them to be excessively violent. It's ironic that he went on to create this horrendous character.

Despite her controversial character, Mammy Two Shoes was a much better written and much more sympathetic character than this utter moron! This guy just loses his temper over slight issues and shenanigans Tom goes through. Mammy, whilst stern, strict, and sometimes aggressive, just wanted some peace restored to her home, and her discipline towards Tom was just that, discipline, not abusing for the fun of it, like how this guy was! These three cartoons, particularly Down and Outing and Sorry Safari, just make me extremely pissed off! They're not funny, they're just far too mean spirited, and it's really just watching bullying being displayed in cheap animation.

But if you really stop and think about it, Clint was really just exploiting and abusing Tom for fun. For example, if you notice in the last clip from Sorry Safari, when he jams Tom's paws into the basket when he's looking for Jerry, it immediately cuts to a shot of Clint smirking with pleasure almost, which is clearly something only a dictator or a psychopath would do!
Compare that to whenever Mammy would thwack Tom with her broomstick handle. Those moments were written funnier and worked a whole lot better because Tom was written either as Mammy's disobedient son or her lazy husband as supposed to her house pet, and, if you ask me, Mammy clearly disciplined Tom out of love. She loved her pet, but she had to show her pet consequences for "bad behaviour" (even though Jerry usually started the commotion).
Clint, in my eyes, NEVER disciplined Tom out of love, and the animators of the Deitch films made it quite clear that he was taking some sort of pleasure from harming his pet, and that's probably why the Deitch films just don't work.

How I would describe the Deitch productions is basically a one sided, poorly written attempt to revamp two fantastic characters. There ARE old cartoons where Jerry is quite unlikably irritating, but those were usually pretty rare, Jerry was actually a cute little character who was just trying to get on with life, and with the cartoons where he does become agitating and obnoxious is the cartoons when Tom actually deserves it. Take Professor Tom for example, Tom isn't actually THAT likeable in that cartoon, since his role is that of the strict school instructor as supposed to the lazy but mischievous character we know him as. There really is no villain or protagonist in these cartoons, same with the Coyote and the Road Runner, or in any Sylvester cartoon.
But with the Deitch cartoons, Tom is pretty much Clint, and occasionally Jerry's boxing sack. I refuse to believe that in Down and Outing, Jerry wanted to go with Clint for a holiday, but for more excuses to mess with Tom. But even in that cartoon, when Jerry sees Clint roughly handling Tom, his expression is pretty much, "Oh, wow! Poor fella!" which indicates that even Clint's form of physicality is too much for him! I'd imagine if Deitch rewrote Spike the Bulldog and Butch the Cat in his cartoons, they would take one look at Clint's behaviour and go, "Nope!"
And it's even more unfair since Tom doesn't really do anything most of the time in Deitch's productions. Usually in earlier cartoons, take The Missing Mouse and Jerry's Cousin for example, Tom does start taking pleasure in bullying little Jerry, thus, when he gets his comeuppance in the end, it's more satisfying and funny.

Many people say that Deitch is not blameable, since not only was he not a fan of Tom and Jerry, but he was only on a tight budget, and couldn't bring the duo back as better characters or place them in better stories for cinema audiences to watch. The money issue I can understand, but I think Deitch just didn't have the sort of respect nessacary to make these thirteen revamps. Respect and knowledge of something are definitely two things that you need to make sure you have when making something like a revamp, reboot or even just a fan product, and I understand the Czech Republic and the United States worked totally differently and allowed themselves to use opposite forms of entertainment and jokes, but if that was the case, why did Deitch even bother at all? I love Deitch, but I just don't think he gave enough of a sweat drop to make to a successor to one of the most iconic pieces of vintage animation.
Chuck Jones' productions, in my opinion, whilst not entirely "perfect", are still a major step up from Deitch's patheticness. All because Jones actually gave a crap, put in effort and made sure that he had good writing. I personally loved the more Dr. Seuss inspired design Jones was working with at that time, and it gave both characters a rather interesting but really fitting redesign, and I believe he started using that style with the Grinch and his Bugs Bunny work from the 70s and 80s. And to give Jones credit, he did make the characters sympathetic again. Tom, whilst deemed as more menacing, angry, and overall scarier, was occasionally written as what he's known as usually, lazy but mischievous. And Jerry, for the most part, was rewritten back into the cute little roommate figure we also know him as.
Goddamn the sound design on these episodes is simultaneously fascinating and straight out of the uncanny valley

Clint is a horrific and downright monstrous character and he makes Spike look like Jesus by comparison. He's just a one dimensional pet abuser with serious anger problems. And when Tom does stuff like ruining his meal, or injuring him by accident, Clint takes punishing Tom to the extreme. The way he smiles when abusing Tom shows he gets some sick kick outta torturing him, he comes off as a complete sadist.
But Jerry in this era is just as bad. He's a sadistic and malicious jerk who tortures Tom for no reason and he always ends up winning, despite being the villain in this era. And he goes outta his way to do things that'll get Clint to rage out at Tom and be as malicious as possible. If Clint knew of Jerry's existence, knowing him, he'd be friends with the mouse as they both love to make Tom's life hell.

I'll never forget how much of an a$$hole Jerry was in Calypso Cat. There were episodes where Jerry tried to sabotage Tom's relationships with other female cats, but he was at least more playful(?) and devious with his approaches. And in one episode, Tom and Jerry were actually happy to be frenemies again, at least until Jerry found himself a new mate (hypocritical, I know).
In Calypso Cat, Jerry was going out of his way to ruin Tom's chance of having a love life because he couldn't handle Tom keeping his eyes off him for *1 SECOND.*

I would say he's far more malicious in "High Steaks" and "Down and Outing", he made Clint his greatest weapon and went out of his way to enrage Clint just to see the abusive prick brutally beat Tom to a pulp and laugh his butt off. The only episodes where Jerry felt nicer was in "Buddies Thicker Than Water" where he saved Tom's life and got him out of the cold and his revenge was more justified given Tom selfishly threw him out in the cold, and "Landing Stripling" where he befriends that bird and helps him avoid being eaten by Tom.

The fact is that Gene Deitch and John Kricfalusi have one thing in common. The first Clint Clobber from TerryToons is the first Ren Hoek from the 90s show and the second Clint Clobber from Tom & Jerry is the second Ren Hoek from APC. Coincidence, don't you think...
John K. is as bad in real life as Clint was in animated form. John is a child predator who was accused of grooming two girls under the age of 18 in the 1990's. He was finally outed in 2018. Gene Deitch in real life was more refined as a human being. He just wasn't crazy about "Tom & Jerry", he couldn't use Clint Clobber's name at MGM (due to Terrytoons owning the name by copyright), and his Czech animators were in a cold-war era predicament when Czech law was ruled by Communists. They had a limited budget (which is why the Deitch T&J's look so cheap) and his animators reportedly viewed only six "Tom & Jerry" films by Hanna & Barbera before working on the assignment given to Deitch by producer Bill Snyder in 1961. So even Deitch's animators didn't know much about Tom & Jerry when they worked on the series. There were only 13 cartoons made from 1961-62, so it was a take the money and run deal. When Chuck Jones took over for Deitch in 1963, his budgets were higher, and his animation was less crude, even though his humor for Tom & Jerry was more like The Roadrunner & The Coyote than it was Tom & Jerry by Hanna & Barbera. As Jones once stated to Leonard Maltin in 1980 in the book "Of Mice & Magic" "Bill & Joe would have as much trouble with The Roadrunner & Coyote as I did with Tom & Jerry." "Our personalities for the characters were just too different."

He never reprimands Tom even when he didn't do anything, unlike the other characters/owners, but always harms him right away. Tom's other owners, in comparison, usually throw him out of the house temporarily, kick him, or hit him with a broom as a non-violent punishment even if it's mostly undeserved.
His role as Tom's owner, in general, is also horribly mismatched, similar in vein to the infamous and notorious Daffy Duck/Speedy Gonzales pairings of the DePatie-Freleng/Format Films/Seven-Arts eras of Looney Tunes, as his only purpose in the Gene Deitch-era is just to torture Tom for no discernible reason whatsoever (as with many other one-off human characters introduced in this era).
Unlike all the characters that beat up Tom throughout the franchise (especially Spike the Bulldog), he ends up reducing the poor cat into a nervous wreck which is often very sad and devastating to watch and makes his violent punishments all the more unforgivable, such as Tom actually crying at the end of Down and Outing, and Tom being shown to be extremely scared and phobic of him in every cartoon the cat appears with him in the worst possible way, especially in both Down and Outing and the ending of High Steaks.
Kinda glad Tom got some owners who doesn't abuse while Clint is the only abusive owner to him.

Tom crying at the end of "Down and outing" sometimes caused me discomfort when younger.
Unpopular opinion: I honestly think the era wouldn’t have been universally hated as much if he was toned down a bunch to where he just a regular guy with a short temper rather than a complete psychopath, or at the very least suffered some kind of horrific but satisfying karma at the end all his appearances.

I still feel bad with what Gene Deitch (Director of these Shorts) went through, NGL.
There's apparently a thing that Deitch didn't want to animate this as he was pressured to do so. Deitch and his Crew also didn't had the same Budget like with the previous Cartoons, hence the Animation being rather unique yet off-ish. To top it off, Deitch is the only one whom has seen how Tom and Jerry Designs look like among his whole Crew.
Unsure if verified, but I did heard this is apparently what happened.
I'll admit, Deitch did had a few good Shorts, as the Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit and Its Greek to Me-ow Short is part of my top favourite Shorts among all of them.
Only "very good" things in Deitch era was "the cartoon kit". Greek to me-ow is not that good, but not too bad compared to the rest of the Deicth episodes.
The amazing thing is that, for the most part, Gene Deitch still understood the series better than Phil Roman did.

The one your referring to is the Terrytoons version of Clint. The Terrytoons and Tom and Jerry versions are completely different as the Terrytoons version is kind.

Even as a kid, I was legitimately scared of this man, knowing that he will hurt Tom in a second. I was painfully aware that he had anger issues, when I was very little. While I do like the Tom and Jerry cartoons from this era, it's only towards the episodes that Clint isn't featured in. (Excluding Dicky Moe).
This just doesn't hit the same without Hannah's screams.😥😓
When Tom screamed in the old shows you'll know it wasn't serious and you know Tom is gonna be alright in the next scene.

Of all three of those cartoons, “High Steaks” was the first cartoon with the fat owner in them, it aired on Cartoon Network around 2002-03 and then I remember seeing the first part of “Sorry Safari” around 2004 when it aired on Boomerang and only saw the first few parts of it and stopped watching it after the owner yells “that’s my gun! Give it to me!” After seeing Tom stuck in the tree with his nose stuck in a gun.

I remember this guy. For a long time, I never knew his name nor did I know if he even had a name. Recently, I started looking him up to find out if he had a name and now I do know his name, or the name they implied he was given. Tom has had plenty of owners throughout the original Tom and Jerry series, some of them were more verbal than physical, it would seem that Tom would be lucky if the owner was verbal but not physical but even if the owner was just verbal and non-physical the verbal pain is just as bad as the physical kind. But when they got physical, from what I can remember, any of the owners that got physical ether hit Tom with a broom or shewed him outside with a broom to leave him outside for an hour so the owner could calm themselves or something, sometimes possibly hitting him with a newspaper, my memory on what sort of physical confrontations the owners did to Tom is a bit hazy since it's been so long since I last watched the show. But I remember very little of what sort of physical abuse they did to him when angered. But out of all of the owners Tom had. None of them were as bad as Clint Clobber. Clint Clobber was the worst when one of Tom's owners got angry at him and reacted as such. The previous ones were still physical but none of them were as worse as this guy. And Jerry is to blame for what Tom went through when his owner was Clint Clobber and Jerry found it amusing. This had to be the worst that Tom went through. Clint Clobber probably never had kids nor did he marry. With his anger problem. The women he possibly dated probably didn't want to be with someone so violent, he'd probably make the worst dad or husband to anyone. Someone should've called the police on him for animal cruelty.

And at 2:13, you finished cooking your lunch and your cat knocks down the table lmao. I mean the owner does have anger problems but that's the point tom just makes it worse lol.
@@harvir6167 I fail to see how Tom makes it worse. Tom was trying to get Jerry as Jerry was basically teasing, taunting or bullying Tom to get him angry and he knows Tom is an easy target. And Tom meant to go for Jerry, not to go for Clint Clobber or make something turn into a disaster. Most of the time, I side with Jerry when Tom is the one causing the problems in the first place. But there are other times when the one who fired the first shot was Jerry. And when Tom is warned by an owner or warned by Spike if he did anything again and he would be met with a punishment. Jerry would overhear that and he'd do everything in his power to make sure that punishment happened to Tom. So basically, the one at fault often shifts between Tom and Jerry. But in this case. Jerry is the one causing Tom to look bad when Tom did nothing to warrant it.

Hate to be that guy, but the fat owner is not actually Clint Clobber, the character that Deitch had created for Terrytoons. Deitch himself confirmed they were two different characters (although they look alike enough that you might be forgiven for mixing them up). The main difference between the characters is that Clint Clobber was often portrayed as a jerk with a heart of gold, while Tom's owner in the Deitch era *very much **_isn't_*

I agree with you. In "Man's Best Friend" and "Dog Show" from "The Ren and Stimpy Show" actually George Liquor was a much better owner than this asshole.
"Ren...Coolest...APC" Don't even say that jokingly! On APC, Ren is 100% like Clint in Tom & Jerry. He torture animals, almost kill Mr. Horse, act like a jerk and even tortures Stimpy (like Clint tortures Tom) for pleasure and not for punishment. The only difference that exists is precisely the fact that Ren suffered a lot in the show and took revenge on the APC, even that doesn't change his bad actions. Clint at TerryToons never suffered to make anyone suffer in the future.
Ngl i wish they made a final episode where Tom and Jerry had enough of clint, so they try to beat him senselessly with cartoon logic until clint had enough and leaves the house, only for him to accidentally run into the slammer for animal abuse

As a kid I thought that this was funny, but now I know that this era just glorified animal abuse. No animal, not even cartoons animals should endure the abuse that Tom did 😔
I'm really glad he finally got what was coming to him in the safari episode where he was viciously mauled by a lion.
Yeah, what's even better is that he was never seen again after Sorry Safari 1962. Thankfully so
