    I raised Guineafowl for 4H and my Keets were so tame they would huddle up with me to eat fresh sprouts and mealworms right from my hand, even as adults they would run to greet me when I came home from school because I always had treats. My favorite to give them was crickets because watching them scatter to grab one was the kind of fun you had as a boy on a farm in the 70s. Later as an adult, I raised exotic birds from the tiniest Finches and Button Quail all the way up to Emu, with a bunch of squawking parrots thrown in the mix. I had Tufted Guineafowl from South Africa and Reichenow’s Guineafowl from Tanzania. The ones out in my yard were West African Guineafowl the domesticated ones we see everywhere.

    In Portuguese they are called “galinha de Angola” (that means Angola chicken). I worked in Angola and they were everywhere. They are very popular in Brazil and are delicious. They are the best solution to eliminate ticks on a farm. They are great watch dogs.

    Honestly love to own a couple but not so i could eat them. When you see them right in front of you, you will see that they have intelligence and also the most adorable little beady eyes. And now i learned a out their tick eating habit, so they are the best fowl one can have.

    guinea fowl are prevelant in Malawi, kept in villages as a "very sophisticated" meat. They only cook or eat these if it is a special occasion. I have personally encountered and observed these birds in the wild and in their natural habitat. They are SO MUCH bigger when kept in captivity here, they rely on very little in their natural habitat, the ones shown in this video are much larger then the ones in Africa. But they are solitary animals in the village that I visit 2-3 times a year, my son was adopted from there as well. They are much smaller when kept in their original environment in Africa. ":)

    We had a single guinea hen gifted to us by a local farm feed store. It had escaped the enclosure and no one had been able to corner it to sell it. They said if you can catch it you can have it. That summer and the next we were virtually tick free as that little hen would venture into the field eating ticks like we eat chips!! My wife didn’t appreciate the call of the bird as it was fairly constant, she needed a flock to settle down and our chickens just never understood her!😂

    I mostly know them as very entertaining birds. I remember a museum I visited as a kid had them freeroaming the garden. And sometimes 1 of them would just start running for no reason which will cause a chainreaction of the whole flock running for literally no reason. I as a kid couldn't stop laughing.

    I landed on this video from another post where comments were turned off. That post was from (I think) somewhere in Canada, and the logo from “CBC” appeared at the end. The woman raising Guineas for sale stated that they had a really “good spring” for selling. Then mentioned she recommended getting your (starter birds) guineas in the fall, but the clip cut off. We have a huge tick problem where we are; which is why I think many people buy guineas in the spring, as we are in now. She also mentioned, ‘establishing a home’, but again; it’s as if the guineas may runoff, but getting them in the fall, I.e. heading into winter, would environmentally encourage them to stick around. Clearly this is referent to a free range arrangement. What is your experience and what do you recommend?

    • @jerryadams6799
      @jerryadams6799 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      more or less you can prevent them from running off by keeping them in coop or chicken tractor for a solid month before releasing them to free range in the day. also feed the at the coop at the same time each day or give them treats at the same location at the same time of day. if brought as keets it is easier to train them to come home than adult birds transplanted to a new home.

      If they are small enough they eat them. They are also just plain noisy. Even the dogs learn when the noise changes to investigate. Putting a fence around the garden does not work. They will eat the ripe tomatoes. So you have to cover the tomato patch with netting when they are to ready produce ripe fruit.

    • @jerryadams6799
      @jerryadams6799 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warrenpuckett4203 they won't if they were not given them or greens when they were young. if they were not given tomatoes or other above ground vegetables when young they typically do no damage in the garden other than they may dust bathe in between rows where the ground is already free of vegetation. they do less harm in the garden than chickens.
