Mazda 6 with Electric Parking Brake - Rear Brake Disks & Pads Replacement

  • The process of replacing the rear brake pads and disks on a 2018 Mazda 6 estate. This process should apply to most modern Mazdas with an electric parking brake.
    This car is now 2 years old and has passed the 50,000 mile mark, the owner complained to me about a grinding sound coming from the back when it braked. It was strange as the disks looked to be in very good condition when viewed through the spokes of the wheels but the inner surface on both sides was completley ruined rendering the disks scrap.
    For some reason the inner edge wore much quicker than the outer edge, these were the original disks and pads as fitted by mazda when the car left the factory.
    Even if you just need to see the process of how to put the handbrake into service mode this video will cover that. I am not sure exactly why car makers fit these electric handbrakes to cars with a manual transmission, in automatics if properly calibrated an electric handbrake is a great system as it can be completely automatic, in manuals i don't quite understand the need or benefit of them, however they aren not as scary to work with as some make them out to be.

    Nice one. I found your footage beneficial. Even moreso than other similar footage. It is nice to be able to READ the footage / instructions. Though I'm English and the thought of others not being able to maybe understand a verbal language. Reading the instructions is another more definitive aid. Less room for error. Also you can PAUSE the footage and read the information as many times as needed. Well done. Good instruction footage.

    Great Instructions. I just did mine. My bolts came out really easy. One tip: Since the end of those long bolts are exposed, spray some lube on them before you try to take them off. It will make it much easier.

    Great and very informative video. Did the brakes on My own M6 2 days ago using this video 😊 Sweet detail with the parking brake service mode 👍
    Worth noticing is that there is in and outside brakepads. So you have to be aware which type faces twds you and which type faces the wheel well (id: Dots on the non friction side).

    Only one suggestion: mention which size are the bolts, diameter of the piston, if you used lock-tight on all bolts, etc.

    Cheers dude.
    Have followed the instructions step by step and have had success.
    My Mazda 6 is from 2018 September, and rear break pads, most likely have not been changed until now. I have managed to break 2 fasteners because they were seized on the calliper. The other 2 on break pad holder were stuck so had to use allot of lubricant fluids.

    Great video and thank you for covering the parking brake "service mode" piece. The only issue i had was that the kit i rented only had 2 prong disc for winding the caliper piston. I found one at a different auto parts store that actually had the 3 prong. This was needed on the car I was working on because the caliper piston had 3 indentions in it that was in a triangular shape.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for the comment. Glad that it helped, i like to cover the full process and in this instance that meant the service mode.
      There are a lot of different adapters for the callipers, some of the chinese kits on ebay are not too bad, how much did rental set you back? For a one off job i suppose it makes more sense.

    • @davidroquemore2775
      @davidroquemore2775 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV the rental is basically free because you get your money back when you return it. As it turned out the prongs were in the 12, 3 and 9 o’clock position, which doesn’t fit. I found one on Amazon that has the prongs at the 12, 4 and 8 position. However, it was one that fits on a 3/8 drive. The issue is that it will turn the piston, but it still requires pressure to push it in. I found a kit online for $20 that has the right adapter plate and has the two holes in it so that you attach it the the piece shown in your video.

    Thanks for the video. I wish I found it sooner. I may have over extended one of the rear caliper pistons trying to check if I was in maintenance mode. Now I’m trying to figure out if I need to replace the seals in that caliper.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont think it is possible to over extend it, unless you operated the button with the calliper removed then perhaps the piston can move too far.

    • @cmsgt4
      @cmsgt4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV that is what happened. I took the caliper off and it wasn’t retracting. I went in the car to confirm it was in maintenance mode and that is where it over extended. I had to take the motor off and manually wind it to compress it. The side that over extended dripped a little fluid which is what has me concerned. On top of that tire rack sent me pads that don’t fit even though stoptech shows them being compatible.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV

      @@cmsgt4 If some fluid come out its likely air got in, the brakes may need to be bled afterwards.

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV Yeah, it seems that way. I picked up some fluid and once my wife gets home with new pads I will finish the job. Turns out the rear brake pads sent to me were not correct so I am getting a set from Mazda directly. Mine was built in Mexico, which has different rear brakes usually but my trim ended up with the Japanese brakes.

      Hi there, not too familiar with that particular brand. I assume you are based in America?
      To be honest i just buy the pads my local motor factors stock, never really go too far out of my way to find anything else. In fairness they tend to last sufficiently well.
      In the case of this mazda the owner provided me with the pads and i fitted those.

    Very informative video, thank you. I was wondering if you could link to where you bought the parts? I'm being quoted close to $500 from my local shop and the Mazda dealer for parts alone, because they claim the EPB equipped Mazdas require an EPB-integrated caliper that costs almost $350 more than your standard brake caliper. How much was the parts cost and where did you buy them? I see 70 pounds in the comments?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The parts were bought from a local motor factors.
      The likes of autodoc or eurocarparts are an online equivilant over here, there are plenty of others about. As for the actual calliper that might cost a fair bit more however the calliper was not replaced here just the disks and pads.

    Much appreciated great video, i need to do Front & Rear Discs + Pads on my Dad's Mazda 6. Just to get this clear, once you put the car in Maintanince Mode, you should be able to wind back the Piston at the rear with no issues? It won't damage the Parking Brake will it or i won't need any specialist Computer Tool to wind it back?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, once you put the car into maintenance mode the handbrake motor will enter a state that leaves it disengaged and safe to use a wind back tool to push the piston into the calliper

      No im from Northern Ireland i have a strong accent it can be hard to understand what im saying but also adding the talking element in takes much longer to edit, it can take so many takes to get the audio right and tryouts to avoid ummm aaaa err etc is hard
      To get the videos to be quick and concise the subtitles work really well plus the video can be paused to read them. Generally i find the approach works quite well and there seems to be plenty of comments to support the approach.
      Im back doing a masters at the moment and i have to deal with verbal lectures, and find them a pain the amount of replaying and pausing needed to take notes from them, but to be honest if everything that was spoken by the lecturer was typed id learn it much faster.
