  • In this video, we're going to focus on the skating skill of jam turns. A jam turn is a tight turn used in close quarters, allowing a skater to exit quickly and gain speed. It’s like doing a swift, sharp turn on your edges and immediately taking off.
We will go through the technique step-by-step. First, leading with the inside foot and maintaining body position. Next, jamming the foot for a one-foot stop, followed by gliding and finally, crossing over to take off in another direction.
We emphasize body control, ensuring that the movement is smooth and controlled. This skill requires practice, but it’s essential for maneuvering in tight areas effectively. Join us to learn and master the technique of jam turns.

How do you get past the outside foot getting stuck like you mentioned at the end of the video? I can single foot outside edge stop smoothly but when it comes to combining that with the punch I'm still getting stuck at higher speeds. Is it a weight distribution issue? Am I putting too much weight on the front or back of the blade? How can I address it and get better quality reps?

I think he mentions to put the weight on the heel of the blade when performing the jam stop and really dig it in? I'm going to be learning it myself. Good luck!

In general, get low, push with your toe, to make snow...

Sorry for the late reply. If you can perform the single foot outside edge stop that is great. When you punch your inside foot to turn simply allow your outside leg to glide around your body as you turn. Your weight will be on the heel of that foot. You want to swing that leg/foot in a big "C" while you turn then drive your knee over to cross over coming out of the Jam Turn.
