I drove a Tesla Model 3 performance, tuned and a stock Nissan GT-R in the same autoX event once. Legit both cars are insane. GT-R won but electric cars will be showing up and taking some trophies one day soon!
I find it funny to find Brandon Slater on your thumbnail. He's one of the first names I learned when I started autox in the North TX region. Very fast guy
This is a great video! It really helps to illustrate that 'tight is right'. Also, that instant torque from the Tesla rewards getting on the throttle early. Maybe we should add a PAX calculator to SoloStorm when performing sectional analysis?
ADDENDUM: I have confirmed that David's Tesla Model 3 was on Hoosier racing tires which would explain the extra few miles per hour more he was able to carry in each sector. It's very likely Brandon was already going as fast as possible for the level of grip he had on his 200 tread wear street tires. This being the case, assuming speeds were maximized by both drivers, the determining factor came down to the lines driven. My apologies for missing this point when I was making the video and I'll be sure to address tires in episodes going forward.
Thank you for this video. Do you know the exact wheel and tire dimensions of the Tesla Model 3? Is it 18" x 10.5" et30? 295/35 18? (FWIW, I also autocross with a BRZ: th-cam.com/video/Fuj3U0eQz0o/w-d-xo.html )
(FACEPALM) I can't believe I forgot to talk about that! Of course the tires make a huge difference! Thanks for pointing that out. I will be sure to factor that in going forward and discuss it in future episodes. David's Tesla was on Hoosiers which would explain why he was able to carry more speed in each section. As a result, my advice for Brandon to drive faster is likely invalid.
Loving the play by play analysis with Solostorm. First time seeing Whitener data, he doesn't even post up SStorm exports on his own channel...lol so thanks for that. Need a Barndominium update soon!
can confirm, Solo-Storm is super useful even on my NON-OBD car. Guys always ask me how i keep picking up 1/2 sec a lap or more. it's the software, it's so easy to see what was faster or not
@@3rdGenGuy Same... SStorrm 92 Miata with a Race Capture Pro MKII data box. I always marvel at local guys hooking into OBDII port or canbus. I see a lot of fast guys just using a BT hockey puck w SStorm.
Can't wait for this series. Watched the previous one. Finishing my BSP s2000 build in DFW. Hope to get at least one autocross in before the end of the year.
Excellent video! Love the sector analysis; Solostorm’s SA is very useful for self-improvement or compare to codrives. I’m not convinced about the usefulness of sector PAX times. Gopro vid that shows driver input might also be very interesting to compare. Thanks for making this super cool video.
Thanks! In future videos I plan to include in-car driver input video as well as an outside course view from the roof so we can see all the details. More to come.
Due to Covid-19 I've been hiding out. I really miss autocrossing and want to get back out there again and start making videos again. Hopefully things will get back to normal in the new year of 2022!
This data was captured using SoloStorm running on an Android tablet. By the way, loved watching your gutted Festiva rip around the course. Would be awesome to see it in person some day!

Finally found a TH-cam channel that gets in to the physics of autox!

Legit that those cars can be crazy fast.
Tesla plaid was the 2nd and 3rd at my first event

Omg, you got David Whitener in there too. Coincidence much lol
These are local guys I've run with for years in the Dallas area.

Thank you! I think a built-in PAX calculator would be great when comparing two drivers from different classes.
A PAX calc would truly make solostorm THE autox data system.
I know nothing about autocross, but this was very entertaining. Thank you!
You could give it a try some day!

its not just power and weight its tires too, the ASP car can run hoosiers where as the STX is a street tire class

I'm just getting into autocross with my Veloster N. I'm looking forward to this series!
More to come! Thanks for watching.
Great video, I love the in-depth analysis.
Thank you for the feedback and thank you for watching.

Just recently found your page, cool video and very informative, your presentation is great.
Thank you! Episode 2 is now up.
Great video!
I've always been a big fan of the solo storm app
slap some Yokohama A052s on that BRZ and it would beat that Tesla.
I have heard very good things about the new Yokos. I think I will need to get me a set for my Evo and see what they do!
Had brz before, modded to compete caymans but at the end of the day, it is just a subaru
