  • Some old thread becomes brittle and breaks easily. How can you test what is good and what should not be used for garment sewing?

Cleaning my sewing room and I have thread from 40 years ago still in the package… I tested them per your video and they popped… thanks for the information!

Thank you for this video. I bought some old thread at a garage sale. With wooden spools of thread is not good anymore unfortunately but the wooden spools are pretty good.

I use those threads for layering on decorative techniques.

Is your thread polyester or cotton?

Does old thread get loose? I redheaded my machine both top thread & bobbin. Changed the needle to a new one. Machine still makes knock noise, & top thread still has loops... please help!

Try a thread you know is new, bobbin and top. If it works then you know the thread is a problem.

But what about old thread and sewing by hand that really is so much of it an issue

Use old thread for basting or on items that won't see a lot of use or washing - like a wall hanging, with the full knowledge that problems could occur over time (drooping, breakage, etc.)
