Thanks for making this, I've been having good results with the La-5 but watching this I realized I've been managing the engine completely wrong. Videos like these are useful I think even for more experienced players as optimal engine settings aren't easy to figure out on your own. I'd love to see videos in this series for the P40 and P39 as I'm sure I could learn a lot about their engines too. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Fahrenheit, happy that even "old sim bats" are liking the videos. I guess making basic videos are possible for the P40 and P39. Dunno about fighting, since i dont like both for fighting.
Although it's fairly not easy for me to understand in english (i'm French...), I it's exactly what I was looking for in order to learn how to manage, land, fly my il-2 aircrafts. Please continue on !! You do a great job !
I was thinking about grabbing the La-5, thanks for the informative video. Cant tell you how much I appreciate you doing your videos in English. Its hard to find IL-2 TH-camrs, let alone in English. I personally do not fly Germans, so its always a joy when I see you in Allied planes!
Excellent. Just excellent. I bet there were many hours research and testing to determine and verify all that information. Thank you. I will now be able get the most out of the LA-5
About the engine mixture, 100% is auto rich, so it is really the best setting for combat at high altitudes as well, as it adjusts automatically with altitude, you should lower it if you want to save fuel.
Thanks, Sheriff - looking forward to Part 2. One thing to note - default elevator trim for Russian planes tends to be heavily "-", nose heavy. For me this has worked OK for the Sturmovik, and fighters fully loaded with fuel, bombs & rockets ("Jabo" style). Otherwise - not so much. Default trims on yaw and roll tend to be fairly ballpark OK. Voice crying in the wilderness - wish somebody would cover the Sturmovik. Air to mud - boring and dangerous, but it wins games. That being said, the things I like about it are easy to fly and hard to break, so tutorials are not as necessary. Otherwise: Strafing. How to hit stuff on the ground without smacking trees, ground, buildings etc. with your plane.
I'm keeping an eye on this series on the La-5. I just can't make it work! I'm so glad you're finally tackling this plane. Interesting as it is, for some reason I get more out of a P-40 than an La-5. Something is really wrong with me if that's the case! Finger's crossed for your next video, Sheriff!
Yeah I dunno, I'm just not used to managing the La-5's energy. I noticed in your intro you're able to really retain and trade off energy consistently. I generally end up losing most of my momentum and go stale energy-wise. It's like a pilot's trap for the La-5. Very hard to recover and not much I can do when I go defensive on that state.
This plane is one of my favs it handles well easy to land powerful and manuevrable and doesnt want to kill you like some planes seem to im playing it in the original 2001 Il2 tho
If you leave the throttle at 10-15 % while landing and keep it at 10-15% while braking, you will find the La-5 is much easier to land. Reduced bouncing, and less rudder input required!
My first sortie with the La5 online was with Sherrif, i was hit, because i didnt listen to him. I got my engine shredded but still made it back to base with this beast of a plane.
Sheriff's Sim Shack ok. Is it true that the la 5fn is more sluggish in turns than the s8 cause I see many people saying that though I don't understand why or why the stats would say otherwise?
Height of supercharger switching depends on current speed. While climbing the speed is smaller so then you need to switch earlier. I usaly checking mainfold pressure. If it is below 790 mm i switch stage to second.
it is good for switching from 1st stage to 2nd (you can prove or correct this value by trottling engine below switching height and making full thrust on 2nd stage. From 2nd to 1st espeshaly from dive flight you should switch stages earlier, but it means that you have a lot of speed anyway.
and btw in winter you need to switch stages at more higher altitudes than on other seasons and diffrent weathers. So cheking mainfold pressure is better method that knowing altitude value.
The timing of this video could not have been better. I just started getting into the la5, wondering if I'm getting the most of the engine. Turns out I'm not.
“The Soviets have plenty of good ground attackers, so I would never use the La 5 for ground attack.” Clearly, the people in charge of the VVS in campaign don’t agree, they think its a great idea to send 6 La 5’s deep into enemy territory, flying at 380 km/h at 1000 m, to bomb artillery emplacements. (But mostly get slaughtered by Bf109’s)
👍👍👍Excellent video, very detailed and packed with important information. 👌👌👌 THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR EFFORT!! I'm really looking forward to the "How to Bf 109 G6" video.
Hello, I dont understand the braking system at all. I press r and l brakes and nothing happens and I have checked on other il2 planes and I have braking capability on them but not on the La5. I listened to you talk a bit about this, but I dont understand. Thanks
Hello, sorry if this has been asked but I looked everywhere and can't get an answer! I'm trying to taxi and takeoff but the aircraft simply refuses to being moving until ridiculous throttle is applied, it's like there is a parking brake being applied but I have checked my controls and there seems to be none on the aircraft. In your video, you just seem to be able to go 20% thottle and begin moving fine, but it's like I'm stuck in the mud until about 90% throttle, and even then, I don't have enough speed or rpm to turn the aircraft using the brakes and rudder.
Just started flying it today, absolutely stunned! Did notice that the roll rate is good, but takes a while to get there (lots of roll lag/inertia) compared to some of the clips you use. I assume that's new in v 3.001?
@@SheriffsSimShack Ok thank you, I am used to just pressing E in single player and it works fine. Could you explain how the mixture works? Just keep it full mixture all the time? Thanks in advance.
Hi Sheriff. I want to start playing IL-2. Which version (on Steam) do you recommend? I'm a mature player that used to fly for a living many years ago. I have Hattrack, a Saitek X52, and a decent rig. I've had enough of War Thunder.
Very similar but there are some differences. The FN has no mixture control, and has no boost which is to be activated by a push of a button. Further more a higher, but time limited RPM setting. I will do a video on the FN if I have the time in the future
I still dont understand how to manage the engine to not fail a mission. It happens all the time to me. After few minutes in the air I cant control my throttle and I fail mission. There is no tutorial about oil, water, coolant temperature neither about fuel mixture it is very unfrotunate and I have thousands of hours in simulators (though civil airliners). Did not expect it will be so hard to fly in this game without engine failure.
Just be selective with you shots. Tap the trigger, don't hold it down. If placed well, it only takes a handful of 20mms to unstitch a wing, cripple an engine or destroy a tail.
typical IL2 bullshit designers put the russian gunsight up as hell and the germans low and even more make the canopy struts bigger than they were or put them in a wrong angle so taht they take more view away ......since over 10 years now these dev´s suck in that big time !

This is going to be very helpful for green pilots. I'll just link the video instead of explaining if I can now xD
These videos are so helpful, thanks so much, Sheriff!
Thanks a lot Sheriff. Will be sure to get some time in the La-5, and later in the Yak-1 as well. For now, I've only been flying the 109F4.

Do you have a video on the la 5fn? I am trying to decide which to buy.
Not a how to. But the FN is great
Sheriff's Sim Shack ok. Is it true that the la 5fn is more sluggish in turns than the s8 cause I see many people saying that though I don't understand why or why the stats would say otherwise?
@@thurbine2411 Yeah the nose feels a bit more "heavy". Feels like the aircrafts balance is a bit different.
Sheriff's Sim Shack ok thanks you.
The charts at 28:45 - Is there somewhere I can find these for all the other planes in IL-2 BoX?
Height of supercharger switching depends on current speed. While climbing the speed is smaller so then you need to switch earlier. I usaly checking mainfold pressure. If it is below 790 mm i switch stage to second.
The manifold pressure is not a good indicator. Since the supercharger needs below a certain alt more energy than the grown manifold pressure provides
it is good for switching from 1st stage to 2nd (you can prove or correct this value by trottling engine below switching height and making full thrust on 2nd stage. From 2nd to 1st espeshaly from dive flight you should switch stages earlier, but it means that you have a lot of speed anyway.

I tested it and it proofed to be wrong. A higher manifold pressure doesn't result in higher performance necessarily.
The timing of this video could not have been better. I just started getting into the la5, wondering if I'm getting the most of the engine. Turns out I'm not.
Very nice. Could you do a How To on the La-7 in the future?
But there is no la7 in the game.
@@SheriffsSimShack Is that so? :(

U have to use just the wheel brake button and the rudder.
How much of this information will translate over to the Kuban version?

You probably havent raised your RPM. You have to do that manually.
@@SheriffsSimShack Ohh thank you very much. At the start of the flight it is 0% like the mixture then I suppose. Thanks again
So you keep the oultet fully close at all time
Not all the time. With the standard engine, in hot weather and in climbs you sometimes need to keep it open a bit

No, that did not change

some of the Earth is in fact not perfectly flat. I know. Shocking!
