  • I picked up the widest rectilinear lens available for the micro four thirds system, the Laowa 6mm f2 Zero-D to see if it would solve my ultra wide angle seascape problem and believe me, this lens did not disappoint.

You seem to be enjoying your foray into the ultra-wide universe, Chris. I’m still loving my 9mm 1.7 PL and quite understated the appeal.

It’s a lens I was wanting and when they asked if I’d like one I didn’t need asking twice. I can’t wait to give it a proper go at sunrise - this was more just testing the waters.

Interesting lens I’ve never shot that wide or heard of this lens, widest being 15mm fisheye and 18mm rectilinear (both FF equiv). I find that the Lumix 9mm is great for cityscapes and I enjoy playing with perspective, I like fisheye for low perspective light trails. I hope more of these smaller 3rd party manufacturers add the electronic contacts it’s nice being able to have the exif data from the lens if nothing else

im eyeing the TTArtisan 7.5mm for astro but I still have to save up more to buy regular lenses being new to mft. I only have an adapted helios 44 atm

As someone that owns both the 7.5mm lenses from TTArtisan and 7Artisans I can say that neither of them ticked the box. I just don’t get along with the fisheye distortion the produce. That being said they’re priced well and they’re well built. Optically there good too!

@@ChrisBaitson I hope either of them will suffice with some basic astrophotography landscape. Im just a hobbyist afterall, plus even just one of them is already expensive for me who doesn't earn any money from photography. 😅
I'll have to save up first to get the TTArtisan 17mm for my everyday lens then I could look into saving up for the 7.5mm ones. Thanks for the response!

Yeah--my latest "toy" also (well, it is fun to use so I guess toy applies). I'm amazed at how much its 120°+ AoV changes perspective compared to my previous AoV limit of 107° (Leica 8-18). I thought about getting the 4mmm but I've never been a fan of fisheyes as they seem more gimmick than serious tool. The 6mm's obviously not the only lens you'd want to leave the house with, but you just can't produce the images it can with anything longer. Yep--you absolutely need a 58-72 step-up in order to use larger (or multiple) filters as a stack of step-ups will vignette terribly, requiring serious cropping (BtW, you can't stack an 82mm on a 72mm even with 58-72 step-up--you'd probably need to go directly to at least 95mm or maybe a 58-82 if that exists). One of the reasons I went for this lens was the filter threads. Also, I don't normally go for the sunburst effect (again, gimmicky) but I must admit that the 10-point diffraction spikes you can get when you stop down are pretty cool.

I threw my filter kit on once the step up ring came and I was pleasantly surprised to see I can throw two filters on without them edging into the frame. This lens is definitely a winner for me in terms of what I like to do!

@@ChrisBaitson So two 72mm filters stacked directly and no vignetting? GTK. Too bad my only 72mm filters are a C-PL and R72. I have 82mm NDs and C-PL plus a Cokin P holder for ND grads (and numerous other square filters I also rarely use) but that doesn't work at all with this lens (or even the Leica @ full wide except in portrait mode). There's always something...

I’ve just switched over to Olympus too mate, and keep finding new stuff I didn’t know it could do! Have you tried Livetime or LiveComp yet?

    • @ChrisBaitson

@@ChrisBaitson Cool, I’ll look forward to that. I’d have thought the Live Time was right up your street with you going a lot of long exposures, being able to watch the exposure build up, takes a lot of the guess work out of it.
