Most vocal coaches agree that she has the best mixed voice ever. Many also believe, and I do as well, that this woman is the best singer on the planet. Just everything she does and all of the many techniques that you and vocal coaches hear and tell us mere mortals. I have been around 60 years, and have heard all those that came before her, and to me, SoHyang is the best female vocalist on the planet. I totally agree with you! I am older than you and I have never heard anyone with such overall ability! I love Whitney, and Eva Cassidy, and Lara Fabian, and Sade, and even the youngster Angelina Jordan, but this lady is on a different level... to me it is she and Lara who transfix the audience the most, though I know Whitney certainly did at times...

Somehow this video got by me! I discovered Sohyang back in May of 2021 when I was fresh out of major surgery for Crohn's disease and wondering how my life would change. I was still dopey on painkillers and feeling sorry for myself watching various music videos and saw Sohyang's name for the first time in my recommendations. A few songs later, I was smiling with a few tears rolling down my face and I felt less alone in that brief dark time.
So here is Sohyang's epic performance of "Everyone" and an equally masterful analysis and reaction. I so enjoyed your breakdown and comments. That upward arpeggio she sings before the breakdown is truly special. And that acapella/whispered section gets me every single time. This song is absolutely gorgeous.
I believe she does her own arrangements in addition to her fantastic singing. That allows her to meld her vocal and the instruments to evoke whatever atmosphere she wants. I also believe she's incorporating her faith into this presentation, with the "He" in the English part "He said" referring to God or Christ. This performance is like a sung testimony, and at least to me, seems intensely personal to her.
She is working with composers that does the arrangements. She might contribute with ideas but the credit does not go to her. This doesn't make her less of a performer or an artist.

Her input, with the cooperation of the conductor and her accompanying musicians, all very high-level professionals, is what results in these exceptional performances. If you took the time to find and watch full episodes of these shows, you will realize that arrangements of other singers/competitors on these shows are rather pedestrian. They don't vary significantly from the original compositions. With So-Hyang's it's a whole new dimension that opens up. And, it's not just a matter of making it "different." Her arrangements are so tasteful. They enhance, tremendously. They don't detract. Like her runs. They are tasteful, exquisite, enhancing.

What gets me is that all of the technical perfection is in service of the story she is telling and the feelings she wants us to experience. So, the song is from iirc the 60s. It's very much a gospel song, though from my understanding the lyrics could be interpreted as being from the point of view of a singer showing appreciation to their audience as well as a more religious interpretation. Sohyang grew up singing gospel in church, so I'm absolutely sure that this song was difficult for her emotionally, especially given her whole life story (she survived cancer, but was left infertile, and has really dedicated her life to supporting anyone in need through her music). I don't know if you caught it, but the ending is in 4/4 while the rest of the song is in 3/4. I love the way they use that change, transforming the song from a ballad to a massive celebration. The acapella/whispered part is in the original, in case you were curious.

It is a SoHyang rearrangement of a 600 + year old Traditional song, that has become a second National Anthem for South Korea! There are many traditional variations but the most common was the root of this version! It has a Group of Family and Friends, going on a journey together, down to the sea and crossing to an Island while a storm brews and unleashed on their tiny craft, tossing them about (see if you can guess the part in the song that represents this storm) When they reach the island they ascend the large hill( Arirang Hill)in the middle! That upward arpeggio she sings before the breakdown is truly special. And that acapella/whispered section gets me every single time. This song is absolutely gorgeous.
I believe she does her own arrangements in addition to her fantastic singing. That allows her to meld her vocal and the instruments to evoke whatever atmosphere she wants. I also believe she's incorporating her faith into this presentation, with the "He" in the English part "He said" referring to God or Christ. This performance is like a sung testimony, and at least to me, seems intensely personal to her.
She is working with composers that does the arrangements. She might contribute with ideas but the credit does not go to her. This doesn't make her less of a performer or an artist.
@@deadphone9639 -- The composer may be dead, for all you know. She is as exceptional an arranger as she is a singer. Her input, with the cooperation of the conductor and her accompanying musicians, all very high-level professionals, is what results in these exceptional performances.
If you took the time to find and watch full episodes of these shows, you will realize that arrangements of other singers/competitors on these shows are rather pedestrian. They don't vary significantly from the original compositions. With So-Hyang's it's a whole new dimension that opens up. And, it's not just a matter of making it "different." Her arrangements are so tasteful. They enhance, tremendously. They don't detract. Like her runs. They are tasteful, exquisite, enhancing.

The sentence she's repeating in korean (naneun neo-ui chinguya) means "I am your friend". It is indeed a reaaaaally emotional song, and I love how we can feel her emotion on her voice. It's not just high notes and low notes, there's happiness and sadness on her voice, and that's what seasons her songs.

Knew you would go to town and as always I learned a ton of new stuff even after having seen every single vocal coach analysis of this performance. What gets me is that all of the technical perfection is in service of the story she is telling and the feelings she wants us to experience. She really is a unique artist and I'd be super interested in your analysis of her most recent work (Love Poem, Stay and a bunch of others from the Begin Again series) which is much more restrained in arrangement but no less impactful emotionally.

So, the song is from iirc the 60s. It's very much a gospel song, though from my understanding the lyrics could be interpreted as being from the point of view of a singer showing appreciation to their audience as well as a more religious interpretation. Sohyang grew up singing gospel in church, so I'm absolutely sure that this song was difficult for her emotionally, especially given her whole life story (she survived cancer, but was left infertile, and has really dedicated her life to supporting anyone in need through her music).
I don't know if you caught it, but the ending is in 4/4 while the rest of the song is in 3/4. I love the way they use that change, transforming the song from a ballad to a massive celebration.

Sorry me again ! My suggestion for your next SoHyang reaction, is one of her very Best,Arirang Alone! It is a SoHyang rearrangement of a 600 + year old Traditional song, that has become a second National Anthem for South Korea! There are many traditional variations but the most common was the root of this version! It has a Group of Family and Friends, going on a journey together, down to the sea and crossing to an Island while a storm brews and unleashed on their tiny craft, tossing them about (see if you can guess the part in the song that represents this storm) When they reach the island they ascend the large hill( Arirang Hill)in the middle! All during this arduous journey they lend each other a hand and comfort and encourage each other, resting together at the top and singing about their struggle together to reach their goal!
It has come to mean the peaceful reunification of North and South Korea, the join again of Families and old Family Friends into one big Safe and Happy Country! If there are Angels when you get to Heaven they will surly sound like SoHyang in this Beautiful Song! The Stage,Lighting,Sound, Filming, Orchestra, Soloist and SoHyangs Traditional costume and unbelievable vocals make this , to me , the Perfect Performance and certainly one of my Favourites!
