DEFINATELY enjoy the longer videos. They give complete info and you can go into your own build/repair knowing exactly what to expect.
Glad you are enjoying the longer videos. Thanks for watching
I totally agree with Capt jack. A rotten transom is what killed my grandfather's cypress plywood boat. I didn't have the knowledge of how to fix it. I do wish I had it now for my grandsons! It had high sides. Thank you for all you are doing and showing!!!!
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the channel!
Not sure what your long-term plans for the channel are, but would also love to see you tackle some larger multi part series type repairs. The first thing that comes to mind would be a rotted transom replacement start to finish. Maybe going back in with Coosa. You have filled a huge void in for this type of content! Wish you continued success!
We plan on putting out a lot more content for you guys! A Coosa transom replacement is a definite possibility, or maybe even a skiff build. Thanks for watching and making the suggestions!
Would like to see a skiff build.
Thanks again Captain Joe, you’re an absolute legend 👍🇦🇺

I have a bad ass rare 89' Larson 224 DC international CC that needs floor/transom 👀😁😂
I’ll bring you a 14.5 shoalwater that needs an overhaul! My baby is getting some water weight in the foam and wood deck.
Great work, greetz from Amsterdam in The Netherlands 🙏🏼👌🏼💯👍🏻
Thanks for watching all the way from the Netherlands 🇳🇱!
Oh Heck Yes !
My puddle of water is where the White River flows into the Wabash River here in SW Indiana and the boat I'm going to speak of has done flowed out to sea a long a go.
I rescued a 12' fiberglass V Bow that looked like it had been dropped off a tall building that flattened it out and cupped the bottom. Armed with a roll of fiberglass mesh from a local manufacturing company that made tanks for various farm needs.
Before I cooked up a plan to bring this Ole Girls back to her former figure some of our resident ducks and geese made Kitty Hair out of my roll of repair material for nesting. Luckily it saved the locally made boat designed for duck hunting called a "Teal Craft". The cupped bottom made it virtually tip proof and could glide effortlessly over lilly pads into the cattails for hunting.
We fished her all summer and donated her back to the Rod & Gun Club for hunting season.
No ducks was harmed in telling this story...o~`o lol
Haha, Very interesting!! Thanks for sharing your boat repair and rescue story with us, and thanks for watching!
love seeing the rapid growth on the channel. quality content! .
Glad you enjoy it! We are thankful for everyone's support of what we are doing!
Awesome content and instruction from a-z boat repair and building
Thanks 👍glad you enjoyed it!
Capt. Joe, I wanted to thank you for these well done videos. Very timely information. I’m working on a Bateau Skiff sk14 that I purchased from the original builder. Plugging up the original open scupper (hated that)in the middle of the transom and reinforcing the transom as well. Thanks again.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching and commenting
Great Job Capt.
Thank you very much!
Excellent! Thank you!
You are welcome! And thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks 👍glad you are enjoying the videos! I will be sure to tell Logan you said so!
Never seen anyone add poly to filler. Makes sense. Clean work my friend!
Yep, it works great! Especially on filler that is a little old and thick. Thanks for watching
Really enjoy the detail on your videos. They are very helpful to a project I’m about to start
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Great stuff wish I was able to see this when I was building my 35 ft. Downeaster.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the videos! Love the Downeasters!
Great content Capt!
Thank you very much!
Really helpful stuff👍 I've a big project planned this summer & I'll be rewatching all these fibreglass series of videos for help & advice💚🇬🇧🌱
Glad to help, thanks so much for watching!
Excellent job...!!!!!
Thank you!
Seeing these jobs done in real time without edits is so refreshing compared to other channels that edit it down to 8 minutes
A while back I saw you in the comments discussing those WM gelcoat repair kits. Would LOVE a professional tutorial on those as well. Picked one up last weekend to tackle a minor repair and I’m a bit intimidated by it.
Thanks, glad you are enjoying our video style! I have one of those kits in the shop, and plan a video very soon for you guys!
Yeah getting to see the from start to finish is a nice thing we get a sense of how fast u have to work and the prep work
Love the Chanel and all the info keep it up
Thanks, will do!
A tip for mixing bondo
Spread the bondo out on your mixing board in a thinner layer it will slow down the heat build up and give more work time on larger
Amounts big mounds build up heat faster
Especially on hot days
Also invest in a 3” orbital DA sander , snap on , Cornwell, Matco, even harbor freight, sell them
My favorite snap on, and Cornwell , they use Velcro paper and with 40 80 180
Even finer papers can be used….its such a time saver …if you try it you’ll love it
Yes, agreed. On hot days or big batches especially.
They are only one thing perfect and that’s the good lord I’m with you done and nice is great
Yes, agreed! Thanks
I really love what u guys are doing on the channel. Maybe some maintenance things for boat owners like bellows replacing and water pump changing or whatever it might be on ur boat. Lol. Just a suggestion. But i would def enjoy like the other comments had mentioned some actual transom demo and completely redoing and installing new stringers and flooring in a boat would be very helpful considering thats what im tackling now in my boat 😅😅😅. But i enjoy everything about your channel. Thanks again. Much love from Maryland❤❤❤.
Thanks so much, I appreciate the suggestion! Best of luck with your project!
Great info.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
Very good information, regards from Puerto Rico
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching all the way from Puerto Rico!
Love the channel👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 Great stuff!! 3m got a mask with a speak membrane that works awesome. Watch your lungs. Best regards Ben from sweden
Thanks for the suggestion! We ordered one today, excited to see how it works!
I have been doing body work a long time and you are right sand the filler with 40 as soon as you can ,do not let it dry completely it will take forever, i think if you sanded it sooner it would have been easier, nobody knows this except me and you
Yes, Sir! Trade secret, that 40 grit works good. Thanks for watching
That’s about 2 square feet.
And I know it’s a demonstration and that takes longer than normal but doing that on an entire boat could take forever!
Have you done any transom rebuild? I have a 97 Four Winns Vista 238 and just found out transom was heated by the exhaust and got some water damage on the lower portion. Thinking about doing it myself but wanted some pro tip and out of all videos I watch you seem to be the best at this. Thanks for all that you do. You have empowered me to do a lot.
Yes, I have done some transoms before. They can be a pretty big job, and they are all a little different. So there isn't just one standard operating procedure. I will try to talk about our make a video on that subject soon for you guys. Thanks for watching!
Hey Joe love the video you need to do a live show
Haha,Glad you think so!
I really been enjoying the channel! I also really like your practical approach to projects: spend the time to make things look perfect when they are visible and it makes sense, but for other things, good enough is good enough. Along those lines, I wanted to run a question by you, there's a lot of division out there about whether it makes sense to use products like Inject-a-Deck or other expandable foams for soft deck repair, or whether the only right way to do it is to completely removed the top sheet and replace the old core. Curious what your thoughts would be. Seems like folks that have used the expandable foam have had decent results, but others would never dare even try it. Thanks!
Glad you are enjoying the videos! We have always cut out and replaced bad or soft floors. There is almost always rot in other areas, like the stringers as well. But to be fair I have never tried the inject a deck materials. It seems like they could buy you some time. It might work, but I feel better about replacement. Just my opinion for what it's worth. Thanks for watching
I swear I asked a question about this exact thing on one of your other videos a few hours before you uploaded this 😅
Also a suggestion, no doubt you’ve got zero time, but guys like me would for sure pay for a half hour phone consult or something to get advice on personal projects. At the moment I’m looking at driving round to boat shops to find someone that will talk to me to just get advice from a professional with experience
Haha, ask and you shall receive! We are working on a way to work directly with you guys on consulting in some way or another. Really appreciate you watching and commenting
For the across the pond thing, Scotland here:
Gelcoat = Gelcoat
1 inch = 25mm, 1/8th inch = 3mm (give or take, maybe a bawhair off but good enough up to round up depending on scale. Easy enough to figure out n/16ths, etc from there)
We use metric mostly except roads because the government is just too tight to swap out the 1970s 70mph speed limit to fit modern braking systems 🤣
Fantastic, welcome to the channel! Hope to visit 🏴 someday. Thanks for the conversions, every little bit helps
Love the channel, the videos are perfect for a beginner DIYer like me! Not certain why TH-cam unsubscribe’s me every day… happy your videos still show up in my feed. Maybe you mention Trump too much.
Thanks so much! Wow, that's crazy, don't know why that would be happening. I keep everything very low key, I know better than to mention certain subjects! Appreciate you commenting
Love the channel! when you’re repairing cracks or making new polyester fiberglass panels can you gel coat over this?
Thanks, glad you are enjoying the videos! Yes, in most cases you can use gelcoat to repair small cracks and coat panels. Of course every job is different and it is hard to speak for every possible scenario. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@FishBumpTV awesome thanks!
Hi I'm Anthony I'm new here. I'm also recently following blimp fiberglass a fisher
Welcome to channel, and thanks for Watching!
Beginner here. What's the difference between TotalBoat polyester fairing compound ($100), and your chosen body filler in this application?
Hey Captain Joe. Love your work. Question: can you add chopped strand fibers to the Napa Prolite and come out with Prostrand? Would it be just as strong?
You should be able to add some glass fibers to prolight, but I don't think it would be as strong or consistent as prostrand. You could always do some tests to see. I have been using a different filler with glass in it recently. It is easier to get than the Napa brands sometimes. I will be using it in some upcoming videos. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Gotcha. Thanks for replying.
Have question on put in transom? Getting ready to put in new with marine plywood is it ok to use thickened polyester resin tho put it in with. Or should I put in fiberglass like 1708 and then put it in.
When we put a wood transom in with polyester resin, we usually put 2 or 3 layers of 1 Oz csm that has been wet out very thoroughly. We then clamp or wedge it in place. You have to work fast, and have everything planned out. We are uploading a video right now that discusses bonding in plywood. It should be up in a few hours. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Just watching you put that thin coating on,
I think before I would put any material on the outside corners,
I would have made the exact opposite plastic wiper, and made a female curve for it,
Making outside corner profiles is trickier than you might think. But you could certainly try it on your next project. Thanks for watching!
How about aluminum plate as a mixing board?
Sure! Aluminum would work. I just don't prefer porous materials like plywood or cardboard if possible. Those materials could leach some of the solvents out of your putties and fillers and change their consistency. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Is this a situation where you could use a fairing compound before gel coat, or is a lightweight filler the best choice?
You should be able to use either fairing or filler under gelcoat as long as they are not epoxy based. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
When you mentioned Bondo...would you ever use it on a boat? It's my understanding that Bondo absorbs moisture and is a very bad choice for boats.
No, we would not usually recommended bondo in a boat. I just said that because it is sometimes a generic word for body filler. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching
When you add resin to the thickened up filler does it matter if the resin is isophthalic or orthophthalic?
It doesn't seem to matter, I added iso in the video. Thanks for watching!
You can get those cutting boards at the dollar store like 3 dollars made of that
Thanks for the tip, much appreciated!
What’s the thickest / deepest you would fill per coat?
About an 1/8th of an inch. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching
Can you use poly filler over an fresh epoxy base?
I don't recommend polyester products over epoxy. Epoxy over polyester usually works just fine. Hope this helps and thanks for watching
watching this is like watching asmr videos)
Haha, ahhh fiberglass therapy!!
👍
Thank you!
can you recommend a supply company near your area for core foam material? Im in Biloxi Mississippi. Do you know if composite one will sell to individuals (non-commercial)? Also, does Plascore or Nidacell absorb resin into the cells when vacuum bagging? Thanks
You might try Advanced Plastics in Elberta Alabama. We don't do any vacuum bagging in our shop, but have had good success with corecell and divinicell products in the past. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Absolutely! thank you for the quick response@@FishBumpTV
The first body filler is it ok to use on the inside of boat
Yes you can, but it is going to be more of an entry-level filler. You kind of get what you pay for, but for some applications it will work just fine.hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Will that board now be ready for gel coat?
Yes, we will probably make a video of that very soon. Thanks for watching!
I'm buying an old panga (~40yrs old) to refurbish that has pretty significant chipping to the gunwale. Would you say that fillers and putty as shown in this video are good to fill in all the chips around it? (boat is about 20'x6') Thank you!
You can use fillers on the deeper chips, then follow with two or three coats of gelcoat. You could also use a thickened gelcoat as a filler. Colloidal silica is usually the additive we use to thicken gelcoat.we have a 2 part video here on the channel using that method that you might find helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thanks cap!
@@michaelrodriguez5614 glad to help!
Kinda got a bit of that Bob Ross does bondo vibe going on there... 😜
Haha! Maybe a little!
@@FishBumpTV Id absolutely fall out if you showed up in a Bob Ross wig in your next video. 🤣
It’s definitely a lot like dressing mud on rock
I agree! Thanks for commenting
Not important, but good to know. The thing you refer to as a Dremmel Tool is actually called a Rotary Tool. It is made by a multitude of manufacturers including DREMMEL Pty Ltd who on their own manufacture as many tools as Hitachi, Bosch, DeWald, Ryobi and all of them. To refer to a Bosch Tool would be meaningless.
Yes, like calling a circular saw a Skil saw, or a soft drink a Coke. Just trying to use some of the common vernacular. Thanks for your thoughts!
I have a question about your comment on the Bondo filler. Do you feel it's just inferior say binding, sanding, or is there another reason? Reason why I ask is I usually just buy whatever is cheap and available but now we do have a new Napa in town. Thanks for the video.
It's just not considered the best product for boat work because it could possibly absorb moisture. The higher end products have more moisture resistance overall. It doesn't mean it can't be used on smaller, less critical projects. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
I didn't know that or I've forgotten over the years. I learned automotive body work from my dad 40 years ago but as you know there's major differences between that and marine. He just showed me how to use it and when not to use it. He metal finished a lot of his work back then and now there are so many products it's hard to remember all the nuances. I appreciate the reply and I'll remember that. I'm building a 55 Chevy 2 door right now. I'm almost finished installing a new one piece floor and I'm metal finishing the entire car. Wish he was here today. He was like an encyclopedia. Thanks for that tip! @@FishBumpTV
@@xxxnonamexxx5615 Yes, I learned from my father also. Lost him to pancreatic cancer 30 years ago. I sure do miss him! Sounds like you have got some cool projects going on, glad the videos are helpful!
