How To: Diagnose Warn Winch Solenoids

- My Warn winch would not spool in the cable but would still spool out the cable under power. This is a typical problem for Warn winches and is easily repairable once you know which solenoids are bad. I will take you step by step thru the process of testing each of the four separate solenoids on my X8000i winch. You can get replacement solinoids from Amazon or elsewhere by searching for "WARN 72631 Solenoid Replacement". They typically cost about $15 each.

Excellent How-to. Using your technique I was able to locate the bad selenoid right away. This Warn XD9000i has been sitting in the barn for about three years and I was going to throw into a metal scrap pile to sell. Thank you for posting this !
funny how I see 3 comments on a warn xd9000 winch. mine has bad solenoids as well.

I'm actually in the same boat. A brand new warn 12k sat in my garage till a year later. Took the whole thing apart the first day, greased the crap out of it because you know they don't spend money on grease from the factory. Put it all back together and mounted it. Tested it. Pulled in fine. Would not spool out unless I tried a few times. I contacted warn. All I have to say is I'll never buy from them again. Customer service sucks. A couple years later still in the same boat. Used it twice. Not happy. I'll take a look at my solenoids. I have a feeling this is been my issue since day one.
watch the seals on them as well. have a 2 year old warn zenon on the front of a land cruiser that was almost a scrap metal project because the seals leaked from day one and rusted up all of the internals. I did not catch it until the motor started making noises trying to turn rusty gears. Once I opened it up I was horrified at the internal condition. Warn warranty was a wasted effort. Ended up rebuilding the winch at my cost and time.

Sorry Dave, I never got around to filming the replacement of the solenoids.
A proper diagnoses would be to unbolt the solenoids and bolt on a new contractor control box. Single best improvement you can make to a Warn winch.
uhhhhhh, this is a video about fixing something. what? you thought this guy thought it was illegal to buy a new contactor box? No, not contRactor, ConTactor, as in a box full of contacts. This is a video about spending 50$ not 350$ Aaaaaaand that also isn't a diagnosis, a proper diagnosis would be "the solenoids are bad" what you suggested is called a REMEDY. however your remedy was a lazy richboy remedy in which you learn nothing and wont have a clue what to do if this happens in the middle of nowhere and you are relying on your winch to get home. surprised your "diagnosis" wasnt just "buy a new winch"

I belive it is smr6005. I belive it is a Sierra part # and I think it fits marine applications.
I've got the same problem with my Polaris 3500 atv winch.
I have the Warn M12000 mounted on my Chevy 3500 Silverado with upgraded batteries @ 1000 amps X 2 so there is 2000 Amps .. i tested mine i very rarely have my solenoids only click a little... but that's after disconnecting the main positive from my battery system and then re-connecting it... looks like slight corrosion on the winch controller plug mounted to the black cover over the solenoids cleaned that up tested the link bars and power connections when i actuate the switch controller ither direction i dont get any response for voltage if it all... only thing i could do during the snow we got a little while back to stop a car from going over was free-spool enough cable then locking it... power in/out doesn't work... so how should i go about testing it ? just like you did here is there a way to test the motor to make sure its ok by its self ? so i can tell if it's not a bigger/mulitple failure problem... and needs to be completely replaced ?
also it's not easy to work on unless i uninstall it as i Did the Ranch Hand - Full Bumper Replacement with all the options... it was my best option so i think i need to drop the which out to really test it..
raykomro I think there is a way to spin the motor just by using jumper cables to the connections on the side of the motor. One terminal is ground, one is forward direction, and one terminal is reverse. A good schematic for your model winch would be very helpful.
At the beginning, you mention they work in pairs to allow 200A. That is incorrect. They work in pairs, but each pair is in series, not parallel, so only 100A rated.
What volt battery do I need to test? I have a 12k pound warn an it just clicks. The white wire from the remote switch melted wonder what made it get hot? It won't give in or out.. I crossed it over an the motor works In an out....
You need a 12 volt automotive battery to test the coils. Mine is not shown in the frame of the video but it is sitting just off camera.
i just installed a promaxx torxx 15.0 bran new an she will spool out fine she just wont spool in it does just a little when u hit the switch then it says overloaded an stops any ideas thanks

No, they do not. But, they sell parts for most any year or model warn winch so rebuilding them is possible.
My winch is brand new and its 14500 lb and its been used 15 times and does not work!! It does nothing help me!!!

Probably corrosion on the terminals. Mine dosent click or move which is a bad ground.
why no mention of where you provide leads source to give power to solenoids from??is it positive and negative of a battery??or where,? what??
