FISH: What is your wish? FISHERMAN: I have none but my wife wishes for a lot. FISH: My lawyers said that the wish should be yours and not hers. So goodbye!
in my favorite version: its not a fish, but a dragon. and it ends with: "forget your wife, she will never be happy. Hang out with me, your dragon bud, and my harem instead."
What version is that? It sounds awesome. It's also fitting since the story also seems to have undertones of standing up for oneself even against a controlling spouse (if not an abusive one).

I personally was excited when I saw the title of the video, as this is one of my most favorite folk tales. I grew up with the Russian version of it, and as so I want to add a few corrections- In the Russian story, the narration opens up with stating that the fisherman and his wife weren't just poor, but the bath they used for washing clothes was broken. After the fisherman caught the fish, which was described as a gold fish btw, the very first thing his wife asked him to wish for was to fix the broken bath. It only after the bath got fixed when the wife wants the fisherman to ask for a better house and better living conditions, as the bath was sort of "test of the gold fish's wish granting powers". And it's quite of an important detail too, as this bath is pretty symbolic in the Russian version, because when everything the wife wished for was taken away from her in the end of the tale, the narration of the tale closed down on the fisherman coming back to his original 'piss-poor' hat to see his wife crying over the bath, which is broken again. The bath is basically a symbol of the closed cycle in the story, not just as the wife not being satisficed with her living conditions, but also that a simple fix to a somewhat big, yet still minor inconvenience to her such as the broken down bath wasn't enough to make her happy. Another interesting detail in the Russian version is that when the fisherman's wife asked to be a god, she aske to be very specifically to be the queen of the sea. This detail is quite important because when the wife wished for it, she didn't just want to rule over the sea, with the wish granting gold fish being one of her subjects, she actually wanted to become a wish granting deity by herself, basically getting all gold fish's powers to herself, alongside being an almighty sea queen. And just like the broken bath from the beginning of the story, this is a small but significant detail, that shows that the wife is so greedy for more power and money, that the only thing that can satisfy her materialistic thirst is for her to literally become the vey same deity that granted her wished to begin with. The wife basically didn't want power over people, she wanted power over over the mystical force made her wishes come true, and ultimately being able to grand her own wishes true by herself. And this is an especially interesting detail to note, as after wishing of basically being a wish granting deity, everything was taken back away from her, including her ability to do basic household chores. The wife couldn't do not only magic stuff, but also basic mortal's house work too, which was the very same thing that started her whole "quest for more power" to begin with. The wife started with no ability to wash her cloths clean, wished her way up to have powers similar to that of God, only to end up not being able to wash her cloths clean, which was always her one and only "true" wish. Again, those are pretty minor details and aren't as interesting as the detail that Jon did include in the video with the wife not being able to recognize her own husband anymore, but I think they do add up a lot to the messed up part of the Russian version of this tale.
@@emanueltorres894 Yup, that is indeed the moral of the story in the Russian version- absolute power corrupts you absolutely. King Midas teaches us to appreciate the things we already own even if they aren't as expensive or as valuable as we may think of them, the fisherman's wife teaches us to to be grateful toward all the help we are given from others (especially when it's given charge free in good faith), and not ask for too much help or too many things from the people who helped us when we were in need.

I seem to remember a Greek version of this story, where the elderly couple were so much in love that they only wanted to be together forever, and so they became oak trees that grew with their branches intertwined. “Fisherman Lincoln, his Girlfriend, and a Magic Fish” Synopsis: In a play based on the well known Grimm Brothers fairy tale, Lincoln plays a fisherman with his girlfriend Girl Jordan as the fisherman’s wife and he one day meets a magical talking fish he caught (played by Liam) who can grant him any wish. Lincoln returns to his girlfriend with not only a fresh batch of fish, but some news that he met a magical talking fish he caught from the sea that he told her, which makes Girl Jordan scream with excitement. She then asks Lincoln to go back to the sea to the fish to wish for a bigger and better house by the seaside, to which he replies and asks Liam the magic fish that his girlfriend wishes for a bigger and better house and the fish responds to the request and makes the wish come true. Lincoln and his girlfriend finally end up in a big and fresh new house complete with a boat garage for a speedboat and Lincoln’s fishing yacht. Lincoln then returns to the sea on a new fishing yacht and he encounters more friendly sea creatures who are friends with the magic fish including a sea turtle (played by Clyde), an octopus (played by Zach), a dolphin (played by Stella), a stingray (played by Rusty), a seahorse (played by Mollie), and a rainbow colored fish (played by Cici) and they along with the magic fish help Lincoln make his girlfriend happy. Lincoln makes requests to the magic fish and wishes for a fishing crew, a fish market and a seafood restaurant near the new house, the house to be a seaside resort, and other awesome stuff to make her happy. Fisherman Lincoln and his girlfriend are now happy with the new seaside resort they call home for some guests to stay at, a seafood restaurant and fish market with delicious seafood, a beach, and other awesome stuff for everyone to see. Everyone including Fisherman Lincoln, Girl Jordan, Liam the Magical Talking Fish, and everyone else live happily ever after at their new seaside port of call.

I first read this with The Magic Fish and then The Fisherman and His Wife. Both were also part of Books-On-Tape. She keeps wishing for better circumstances and the Fisherman was more humble and moreover, content. They both return, at the end, to where they were before the wishes. Yes, in the story and Books-on-tape, she asks to be, "God."
14:00 That sort of sounds like the first reverse mortgage. In New York City a elderly widow owned house outright but was need of money. She had a young male friend who had money but wanted the house. Instead of buying her house he worked out a deal with her. He would pay her a certain amount of money each month and when she died he would get the house. She ended up living another 30 years and, in fact, outlived the young man. Considering that, it's surprising that reverse mortgage ever became a thing.
I’m super glad you’re covering more obscure tales! Might I recommend Godfather Death? It’s my favorite out of all of the Grimm stories and I’m sad not many know about it.
I was told that story when I was little but in my culture we have a shrimp and the guy says (in Spanish) “Camaroncito duro, sacame del apuro.” It is exactly the same story line but we also use it to teach the kids they should know when to say know just like the fisherman should have told his wife no when she got unreasonable. 😊
i like that the stone cutter ended up feeling ok after all was said and done..though i'm not sure how the fisherman felt..he still had to live with his wife :-)
Yeah, they both make a dumb wish & then need to use the 3rd to un-do the first 2. The Fish basically tricks them & gets away because they are stupid & greedy. That's the story I know too.
I remember that one! I heard it when I was little. Then later I also saw it in a movie of Tom Thumb. As I recall, at the start of tale, the being that gave them the wishes said it wasn't allowed to leave them with nothing. So it undid the first 2 wishes, however, since the wishes were squandered, and had to be undone, the final wish would be very small. What they really wanted was a son. That's why Tom was so tiny.
This was one of my favourite stories growing up. There are a few different versions of The Brothers Grimm version because I never read the one where the fisherman and his wife lived in a pisspot. The two versions that I read, they lived in either a hovel or a pigsty. Also, in one version, the wife's final wish was to specifically be Lord of the Sun and Moon.
That's my favorite Grimm fairytale. My grandpa always told me that in low German. 😆 "Buttje, Buttje in de See. Meene Fru de Isebell mook net so we kick it wel!"
I misread the title as The Fisher King rather than the Fisherman and his Wife. The stories have nothing in common, but now since you mention it, I remember this tale quite well only because of Rocky & Bullwinkle. When you spoke of the Stonecutter story, I brightened because I'm hopeful you'll cover the folklore behind the movie The Tale of the Princess Kaguya because I always thought it was interesting, heartbreaking, poignant and beautiful.
Hey John solo I saw I saw a comment asking for Apollo and Artemis and so can u do other gods from other regions not even main ones like Aztecs or other early civilizations
A problem with the lessons is that it also teaches people to stay in their own place. Keeping a hierarchical structure no matter if its actually good or not
My grandmother used to read this story to me. It's a well known story in North Germany and the fisherman speaks in a North German dialect (Plattdeutsch) whenever he talks to the fish. I love that they didn't translate "Pisspott" in the English version. 😂
After hearing the way you told this story I kinda want you to do a comic books explained. Starting with Spiderman even though I'm sure everyone knows his origins I just want to hear your take on it. Plus then you can do some obscure ones few know or aren't as hugely popular or as popular anymore like the Shadow, Dick Tracy, the Phantom, and Tin Tin. Probably a lot more too.
The version of The Stonecutter that I had heard relates that the wishes were granted by the mountain where he cut stones. It also has his cloud version pushed by the wind, so he becomes the wind. When the wind couldn’t move the mountain, he wished to become the mountain. Then, yep, there’s a stonecutter chipping away at him. In the version I heard, he remained as the mountain at the end.

I remember reading that as a kid. It’s stuck with me since. So ya I enjoy or appreciate this folklore. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Still waiting for Bearskin, Snow White & Rose Red (Not talking about Snow White it’s a different fairytale), King Grizzle Beard, The Lindorm King, and such.
Wife: “Whoa, check out those huge balls! Let’s catch ‘em!”
Wife: **Grabs colossal baseball mitt**
This was my favorite story growing up! I borrowed this book from the school library so many times. Thanks Jon.
I'm so happy he got 1 million subs that I'm not even skipping his ad read
“It’s a children’s book and they call their house a pisspot” Yep that sums up social acceptance of what was appropriate at the time
Edit: “No Derek that’s why your parents divorced.” 😂
Wow the Solo fam has reached 1million subs. Congratulations to the hard work, an great content that's been brought to us! Can't wait to see what's he continues to bring us.
Any chance you can do more Japanese Folklore? I'd love to hear you take on some of the more well-known ones come Halloween.
Ohhhhhh, Yes please
Toxic relationships, amirite? (Also, I’m loving the art in this one)
I mean, you're right. Makes you wonder why she married him to begin with.
happy 1 mil subscribers!!💛
I remember always hearing a version of the story where the fishermen eventually around the god wish got sick of his wife's wishes and noticed the unstable state of the sea and went back to the fish to undo all her wishes. And then the sea was calm again and everything was back to normal.
I remember that version.
With over 600 comments you will probably never read this, but . . . I just watched your video of November 16, 2011 and now I know what invisible magnetism drew me to your channel. You’re a fantastic example of the young people we need today. Like, right now today. The evolution of your channel is amazing. From fantasy to fiction to folklore your mind appears fixed on sleuthing out hidden truths. So when are you running for office?
I live this story! I remember reading it in German in my elementary school library, Thanks Jon!
In German I know it as "Mann und Frau im Essigkrug" - Husband and Wife in a vinegar pot" and I loved it. But the title Fisherman and Wife is known too, so much so that I knew instantly what story you were going for.
i honestly love the way he talks. i don’t think i’d have any trouble concentrating or understanding in school if he was my teacher 😂💕
This story always confused the hell out of me as a kid.
This story confuses the hell out of me now
You *ARE* the wife!
Ikr, how does being a god make you poor?
@@mayam.235 it doesn't. She wished for too many/much so the fish took back all of the wishes.
No more nice house. No more queen. No more pope. No god-ness.
how? it’s seems easy to follow imo.
Right now I'm on bed rest because I may have a sprained ankle and your videos are making it better
Ouch! Get well soon!
Thank you
Also so you know you are my favorite TH-camr!!!
The best wish is “Contentment”. Being content no matter how bad or life gets is a blessing.
Yeah, I had come to that conclusion too. Contentment and acceptance. Then one day I thought; wait... you could find yourself totally content with your hunger, and thirst! You could end up a content corpse, leaving behind people who had loved, and relied on you.
Contentment needs to be tempered with some motivation.
Life requires balance.
@@CieJe.Alexander well yeah. Common sense tells you to never be content with abuse, neglect, or poverty. Being content with that is called Denial. Not talking about that. Talking about being content with an average existence instead of always longing for something else.
I'm glad you're covering this tale. I've suggested this story on a few of your videos
I'm sorry but "Go home she's in her pisspot again.' just send me 🤣🤣
I can just imagine the fish being so annoyed lmao
Hey Solo. Your videos are awesome!
Not sure how long this was the case but congrats on 1M! 🎉🎉🎉
"his name was Robert Paulson"
Thank you for that moment. It made me happy. I'd say more but ya know, you don't talk about it.
Your videos make me so happy man
I seem to remember a Greek version of this story, where the elderly couple were so much in love that they only wanted to be together forever, and so they became oak trees that grew with their branches intertwined. That tale was how i learned what a bonded pair is, whether of trees, birds, humans, or whatever; they prosper together or suffer together, and if one dies the other might not last much longer. Beautiful story!
Im glad you are yourself man, it's refreshing not everyone feels they have to be a tough guy. Im not saying your a wuss by any means, you could be a stone cold killer for all I know I just enjoy your content and I sing and listen to songs/watch movies and shows from my childhood with my fiancé and kids so I understand.
The only one of these I knew was the unhappy stone cutter and that's literally just cause I vaguely remember watching the episode of "The Book of Virtues" where it was included.
Cannot express how much I love you for using a Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon reference.
7:15 I think the moral of the story is:
“Women are _never_ happy, no matter how much you do for them”
and
“If you find a magic flounder giving out wishes, make them yourself”
or in simpler words....
“Flounders Keepers”
The moral of the story never tell your wife about a talking fish
I disagree with the misogynist sentiment. But I give a 👍 for the pun.
This conclusion could only be drawn by someone who shaves their mom's back hair
I love how we always reach the like goal, so proud of us 🙌✨✨
Dude this story was one of my favourites as a kid
My granny read that to me when I was a little one + today is my birthday! You made that just for me. Thank you so very much!
“Fisherman Lincoln, his Girlfriend, and a Magic Fish”
Synopsis:
In a play based on the well known Grimm Brothers fairy tale, Lincoln plays a fisherman with his girlfriend Girl Jordan as the fisherman’s wife and he one day meets a magical talking fish he caught (played by Liam) who can grant him any wish.
Nice rewrite! He didn't just think of himself. And she wasn't consumed by greed. Also nice details, naming everyone.
P.S. Since this is set in modern times. I hope he also wished for an honest business/law, advisor/accountant, to help with; zoning, taxes, permits, etc.
Gotta love your transitions to product placement they are legit the only ones I watch.
I'm so glad I found this channel! I ran outta Mr. Ballen videos and thought I was gonna go into TH-cam withdrawal! haha instead I just have a new addiction 😅
Welcome to the Solo Fam! We're all addicted!
LOL the moment I finished watching all his videos- and I mean all, the videos 3-4 years ago back when he wasn’t even Jon Solo, the videos where he was Johnny/Johnnygasm- I finished my a whole binge marathon, and of course he posts a new video 😂
Congratulations! 🏆
I'm working on that very goal myself.
Early days had alot of Star Wars Theories!
Slowly but surely, I'll get there, if the force is with me.
Eyes on the prize! 🏆👀
I hate having to skip his ads but I do not have much time before I have to go to work and I wanna enjoy his stories before I must leave.
I haven't watch you for 7 months and now you're in 1 mil congratulations
I'd love if you do more "the messed up origin " covering greek mythology and gods too . I love the greek mythology videos.
This was one of my favourite stories as a kid. I knew straightaway what it was and it was why I clicked!
I’m super glad you’re covering more obscure tales! Might I recommend Godfather Death? It’s my favorite out of all of the Grimm stories and I’m sad not many know about it.
That's a good one.
I love reading this story to my students and they tend to applaud at the ending. Thanks for this!
I’ve been subscribed to Jon Solo for 4 months
I was told that story when I was little but in my culture we have a shrimp and the guy says (in Spanish) “Camaroncito duro, sacame del apuro.” It is exactly the same story line but we also use it to teach the kids they should know when to say know just like the fisherman should have told his wife no when she got unreasonable. 😊
i like that the stone cutter ended up feeling ok after all was said and done..though i'm not sure how the fisherman felt..he still had to live with his wife :-)
And, I think she'd be very angry about everything being taken from her.
This reminds me of a story that's just like this but she ends up wishing there are sausages on her husband's nose
The last one about the bull was great. Poor bull being stalked like that 😆
I'm so happy I discovered your yt channel a long time ago your yt channel the only thing keeping me alive rn😭
Bruh really? Wanna talk about it? Or youre exagarating?
@@selenajarv8763 LMFAOOO omg I'm so sorry I didn't say it actually meaning it I was just exaggerating sorry 😭✋🏾
@@Meowcraft09 its ok☺ i just wanted to make sure
I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT STORY YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!! I loved reading the colorful fairy books as a kid along with the Grim brothers fairy tales
The Unhappy Stonecutter story plays a major role in the first Kingdom Keepers novel and its major McGuffin, the Stonecutters Quill, is named after it.
"You'll be cursed with Cheeto fingers for a thousand years."
As stupid/silly as it sounds, that's actually terrifying.
Congratulations on 1 million subscribers !!!
Do messed up origins The Count of Monte Cristo! Please! It would be great.
I LOVE THIS STORY. The simple she is back in her piss pot ending, is my favorite. She got was she deserved.
I loved this story as a kid. It taught a great lesson about being thankful and content with what you have.
AAAHHHHHH 1 MILLION SUBS CONGRATS BRO SO PROUD OF YOUU
You right, it's been a while for the Intex! Thank you for bringing it back! ☺️
Thanks for another splendid episode mr.Solo
Congrats on 1 million subscribers Jon Solo 🎉🎉🎉🎉🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊
That's my favorite Grimm fairytale. My grandpa always told me that in low German. 😆
"Buttje, Buttje in de See. Meene Fru de Isebell mook net so we kick it wel!"
Nostalgia. Thank you so much Jon
Happy one million Jon, great work
I misread the title as The Fisher King rather than the Fisherman and his Wife.
Did Jon just hit A MILLION or has it been at this number for a moment???
Hey John solo I saw I saw a comment asking for Apollo and Artemis and so can u do other gods from other regions not even main ones like Aztecs or other early civilizations
Dude! I can’t believe how your channel has blown up in the last year! Actually, I can but still...congratulations, I love your stories. 👍
A problem with the lessons is that it also teaches people to stay in their own place. Keeping a hierarchical structure no matter if its actually good or not
I heard this story from another two channels but not the origins it will be nice to hear it
This story is very underestimated. Great job.
Jon Solo finally got 19 subs!!! CONGRATS!
Congrats on your milli!!! 🥳 🥳
I actually DID know the story just by the title! Thank you for the origins!
My grandmother used to read this story to me. It's a well known story in North Germany and the fisherman speaks in a North German dialect (Plattdeutsch) whenever he talks to the fish. I love that they didn't translate "Pisspott" in the English version. 😂
CONGRATULATIONS ON 1M SUBS JON!!
I loved the flounder impersonation 😂😂😂
Awesome and cool!
