I discovered Low when I lived in Minneapolis back in the mid '90s back when I was in my early 20s. The short-lived, locally-owned and operated Modern Rock station (which, I hope, some of your viewers might remember), Rev-105, started playing songs of theirs from their second album, "Long Division", and it didn't take me long to get hooked by their hyper-minimalistic songwriting ethos, both in terms of lyric-writing and musical composition -- a stark counterpoint to, and refreshing departure from, the feedback-heavy noise of the waning days of the Grunge era of Alt-Rock that was beginning to become boringly formulaic to me (and this is from someone who loved many of the first generation "Grunge" bands from Seattle, the wider Pac-NW, and elsewhere!). Ironically, when I went to one of the local record stores that I frequented when I lived there to buy a copy of that album only to learn that they were out-of-stock, I wound up buying a copy of their first album, "I Could Live In Hope" in its place without ever having heard any songs off of it yet, and I fell in love with it right away! To this day, it's one of my all-time favorite album acquisitions bought on reflex without hearing any of its songs, first! What I loved (and still love) about Low is how much they could make with so little -- a trio in the beginning with eventual husband and wife, Alan Sparhawk and Mimi on guitar and drums, respectively, and taking roughly equal share of vocal duties on different songs and dueting on others, while complimented by a revolving door of different bassists over the three decade span of the band, they would later add more touring musicians for live performances. While their early albums followed the slow and quiet mode that was their signature sound, they did become louder and faster, and incorporated drum-machine and other instrumentation absent from those earlier albums over time thru subsequent albums while managing not to lose that "sound" that was uniquely theirs -- to me, they were the first "Post-Rock" band (even "Proto-Post-Rock" -- as contradictory as that label might sound!). While none of their albums are less than 4-star, in my opinion, I think Things We Lost In The Fire and The Great Destroyer are my personal 5-star top-favs of theirs. This news seriously breaks my heart, and my thoughts are with Alan and their kids as they grieve their loss! Mimi was an amazing musician, and she had a lovely and unique singing voice that I'll truly miss -- especially given the fact that I've never seen them live, apart from video footage of their live performances here on TH-cam, that is, but I've never seen them live, in-person (now one of my life's biggest regrets!).
This pledge of allegiance business shows what poor opinion the government has of its citizens: do they expect you to renege on Tueaday on Mondaay's pledge, and that's why you should pledge again? and then you'd renege on Wednesday on the Tuesday pledge etc etc. Social housing: there is a certain amount of segregated social housing in France and the UK. Holidays being denied? I thought slavery had been abolished??!! This US nationalism, does it keep people warm, fed and in good health? A government shuld never be about glory, but about looking after its citizens, not after big corporation. Finally: why is there one CEO for many workers? Because you need the workers more. Imahgine what would happen if nurses, bin collectors etc stopped working for 3 weeks. What if the CEO is away for 3 weeks? the factory goes on ticking. It takes more than 3 weeks of a CEO's absence to upset the applecart.
