The early morning bird calls are amazing. I’ve found Cairns harbour itself to be muddy at low tide but anywhere north of there to be beautiful. (Check in case it is stinger season though) The cable car trip up to Kuranda is amazing & if you can co-ordinate with the vintage train down that’s a bonus too. About an hour drive north is Port Douglas which has the Habitat wildlife centre that I think your son will enjoy. The town itself still has a little bit of a hippy feel left & has weekend ? markets there. A bit further north is Mossman Gorge which has rainforest swimming (always cold & hold onto your youngster). A bit further north again is the Daintree River which has great crocodile cruises & a car ferry to the other side. I’m glad you are having such a good time in Oz. Cheers from Sydney
33 years ago, my wife and I drove from Canberra to Cairns, camping along the way. When we arrived in Cairns, we fell in love with the place. We love the tropics, and Cairns is probably the only true tropical city in Australia. So when I retired 3 years ago, we sold our house in Canberra and moved up here. We are so pleased we no longer need to put up with the cold winters of Canberra.
3 different trips to Cairns basically reset my life ... i had been as a kid with family for trips but returning, as an adult or just in the essence of whatever calls us to the grounding but inspiring things we do with ourselves- in the path of learning about ourselves and becoming the sage wiser version who is the teacher , the father , the documentary creator etc Have fun happy family - i look forward to more of your updates from your weeks ahead 🎉🎉🎉
Welcome to Australia buddy. Cairns is a great base for day trips in all directions. You can take tours out to the reef. You can take a coastal drive to Port Douglas ( my favourite holiday destination). You can explore the Daintree rainforest. There’s white water rafting, skydiving, balloon rides, fishing tours, Etc. Keep your mind open to new experiences and you will have a great time. Enjoy!
I'm glad you're all having a good time here in Australia, and you're so positive and accepting. Most Countries have good and bad aspects, Australia is no different. Surely, you, your wife and son will take the train to Kuranda? Never been there myself, but I'd like to. All the best. 🇦🇺😀👍PS. Does our coriander taste like your cilantro?🤣
Cairns is really just the stepping off point for some of the best scenery in Australia. Must do,s include Cape Tribulation where the rainforest really does meet the beach and then the Atherton tablelands behind cairns , cool with elevations of a thousand mts and more , must do is the waterfall circuit on the Atherton tableland. Also try to visit the cairns botanical gardens, Flecker Gardens, without a doubt the best tropical rainforest gardens in Australia.
I'm happy you are enjoying Australia so far.. i have never been to Cairns way to hot for me... i live in the snowy mountains in Australia.. yes it snows here.. only last week it snowed for two days.. Australia gets more snow then the Swiss alps!!
If you like military vehicles you should check out the Australian armour and artillery museum in Cairns, its the biggest military vehicle museum in the southern hemisphere!!
I’ve stayed in Port Douglas and it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s quite a distance from Melbourne. You get to Brisbane and you’re only halfway. Enjoy the good life.😊
I'm please you enjoyed our front yard. Now head down South and see our magnificent freshwater swimming holes. Little Mulgrave, Behana creek and the Golden hole should not be missed when visiting this region.
I live in Cairns, not just stingers in the ocean, crocs and sharks. That’s why nobody is swimming in the ocean. Stinger nets are at certain beaches to keep stingers out but the nets are not foolproof. Take a boat to the reef to see beautiful colour sea but you need to wear a stinger suit if snorkeling or diving. Pools/lagoon are the safest way to swim at this time of year.
Yeah, nah, it gets WAY too hot in Cairns. A tourist trap . I got 'coral ear' from swimming when the coral reefs spewing their' 'pollen'. And the crocodiles might deter most people from havinga swim off the mudflat they call a beach. Head down South mate . Around Bundaberg the weathergets a lot better and the beaches are golden or pure white depending where you go.
Great if you like swimming with crocodiles, sea snakes poisonous jellyfish and spiking shells and poisonous spiders. Housing is ridiculously expensive … transportation is virtually impossible.., but good luck!
You didn't mention the swimming lagoon in cairns is open to the public and free -no cost to enjoy - the state and local governments provide excellent park and facilities free of charge for individuals or families to enjoy at no cost.
There used to be a slogan for ads for Queensland Tourism: "Queensland: beautiful one day, perfect the next." Kind of the opposite to Victoria, Australia... :O
Funny you say that.I was watching the cricket on the telly at the MCG yesterday.Looked like a beautiful day.The Brisbane test was rained out if I remember correctly
Excuse me for take a small criticism of your POV of Cairns, but as a Aussie who has been there twice and dived the region off the coast, I think you have rocks in your head!!! Irrikanji, Box Jelly Fish, Crocs, Great Whites and Tiger sharks love the area. So you can NOT go in the water. Offshore (70klms away), not without risk. It continually rains. It's always humid. The beaches (oh, what beaches) are brown mud - and you have to walk miles at low tide to get to the water after all. There's nothing to do except go to Kuranda. and everything is expensive thanks to the Japanese! Here check this out: th-cam.com/users/shortsGOZIUHi_YNQ
@@barryvincentredmond3973 Not all of them No. What's the point of going to a beach if you can't get in the water? How can you call something paradise when clearly it is NOT?
I have lived in cairns for 40 years… love it

Head up to port Douglas. I think it’s an hour car drive. And swimming is good at the water springs.

Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed around the Cairns area.
Drive to Coperlode dam in the morning. Crystal Cascades is a must visit also.
You know your in Australia reason the birds in the morning sound this is all over the country.
Cairns along with the rest of the east coast, where the great barrier reef is off-shore, has the least 'best' beaches in Australia!
For sure. The nice beaches seem to be north of Cairns city
@@RoamingMarketer yeah nah, you need to go South West about 4000km for the best beaches in Australia...though you'll have no crocs to cuddle!
Hard to find a better place to be than Cairns at sunrise.
Are you going to head down to the Whitsundays?
Go 20 minutes north to palm cove
I love Cans
Curlews rule the dawn

Living here in Cairns.Have you been to Holloways,Yorkeys Knob,Trinity beach.or Palm Cove.?.Sandy beaches unlike the esplanade itself.
