Hi! I just found your video and it was super helpful. After some soul searching I finally settled on going into film as a major and I fell in love with Tisch’s program. I’ve always loved nyc and preforming arts with my whole heart and I knew I wanted to be in that world, I just wasn’t sure exactly where. The only problem is I’ve found myself more than halfway through junior year with basically no experience in film. The extent of my experience goes as far as 3 terms of a middle school video production class and 1 week into a paid technical theatre internship. I’ve done a lot of other preforming arts things but nothing that really relates to film. I honestly don’t even think I know how to use a camera anymore nor do I own one. I plan on applying to NYU early decision 2 next year while taking a video production class that centered around creating a portfolio but I’m worried if I’ll actually have quality work to submit due to my lack of time, experience and resources. I guess I’m wondering if you have any advice? Sorry for the word vomit btw

I plan on applying to NYU (as well as other schools) for film! I have a lot of ideas but not a lot of film experience so would it be bad if i were to make a bunch of shorts and films specifically to put in my portfolio? They aren't like specific films, I've just had these ideas but no resources or time to make them until now.
Omg of course not- i think making a bunch of work now for your portfolio is a great idea! i would look at the requirements for each school you want to apply to and make films for those (some schools have film prompts, different time lengths, etc)

Hi, thanks for making this video! It was really helpful! I'm currently a Junior in high school and am considering applying to NYU for film as well actually, and I have a couple questions I'd like your opinion on:
I have a TH-cam channel where I've done a lot of videos for (my own storytelling stuff) but I was wondering if you put that you have a TH-cam channel do they research you (I'm kind of nervous because a lot of the videos I've made when I was younger so the writing isn't as good I guess)?? Also I want to try and get into some film festivals but it's really hard for me to get involved in those kind of things since I'm a foreigner (Canadian) living in China going to a bilingual high school lol.
Also, I co-founded the school newspaper and I'm actually the head of the video department, where we'll be properly launching a video channel in the coming weeks (on Chinese social media). Provided this is successful, how do you think my chances would be?
(For the record, I will also probably have 7-8 APs, unsure about SAT, and might get student council president)
I love your video, that’s awesome! And I want to know if it’s too late to prepare for applying film program in NYU from junior? I’m a amateur photographer and shot some daily video around me but never really get in to it. If it’s not to late, any suggestions?
i don’t think it’s too late! i would just start looking at some of the portfolio application requirements so you can start thinking about what you might want to do for your visual supplement (film) :)

Yeah gpa is like one of the pretty important thing here in America when applying to college it sums up your academic average grade so definitely yeah

What advices do you have for students in public high school that doesn’t offer Film program to get into film schools?
Start making short films and writing on your own! Get friends and family to act and help
is there anything about how you managed to afford the tuition? even if i get in, i cannot pull that type of money :(
hi! so Im currently a community college student and just finished my freshman year. I want to apply and (hopefully) transfer my junior year and am so worried about how ill afford it, did you get in on any scholarships?
I also live in Florida so id be an out of state student^^^
nyu is a private school so I don’t think there is an out of state tuition expense! but i did get lucky to receive a scholarship which they automatically consider you for when applying 💌
How long, in your opinion, does it take to prepare for admission?
Depends on how many essay drafts you want & what you’re applying for! For an art major that requires a portfolio it will take longer since you’ll need to prepare your visual sample (ex. short film)! My short film took about a month :)
