Woodcock on the Black Isle

  • We're on Scotland's Black Isle for a woodcock shoot, but we're not doing things the traditional British way -- this is an Italian job, with setters with bleeper collars indicating the presence of this revered bird. This is no grouse moor -- there's awkward cover and bogs underfoot. And it's the last days of the season, so we face a race against time to get some woodcock shooting action on camera.

Not sure what people are objecting to. Shooting over pointing dogs is real fair chase hunting as opposed to the somewhat more contrived "hunt" that is driven shooting. I don't object to either but prefer to pursue game rather than have it presented to me like a clay target. The last shot was low but the bird was pulling away from the dogs fast. As noted, bigger woodcock than here in the US. Glad I don't have to get on a plane to experience this kind of hunting.

If the dogs have an up-to-date pets passport they do not have to be quarantined. This passport is given after the dog has been inoculated against various diseases and only after passing a later test that proves the dogs have the necessary anti-bodies against the disease - rabies for instance. Furthermore they have to undergo a vet inspection, tick treated and wormed 24 hrs before arrival.

From the 1st January 2012 a dog can travel between countries that are members of the Pets Passport Scheme a fortnight after it gets it's Rabies Innoculation. No further blood test is required. My last involvement with importation was a pointer pup from Denmark born in August and in GB in October. Previously a blood test was required six months after innoculation and if successful the dog could travel a month later.

10 woodkock found, 5 shooted and only 2 taked....at the end of the day they told..." not too bad"...
I suggest them... Please, go fishing...

I can't believe that these guys are walking around with closed "loaded" guns. Those guns should be broken. A broken gun is a safe gun. If you fall with a closed, loaded gun...IT WILL GO OFF!

Hi folks, I want to add to my comment from 4 years ago because I can see that some people are confused. I am talking about shot guns! Look at the video, not any other kind of gun! Loaded shotguns will go off if you drop them because the hammers are spring loaded and cocked, the safety is only for the trigger. PHEW!
