  • The woodcock may be an abundant bird but anti-shooting organisation Wild Justice has found a way of presenting the figures to make it sound sensible that they call for a ban on woodcock shooting. Deborah Hadfield looks at how they are trying to bump the government into a ban.

    Why shoot game birds?
Game is wild, natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Both pheasant and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of game, game shooting is worth £2 billion annually to the UK rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK government figures) active game shooters in the UK who enjoy bird shooting under the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice.
More than 2 million hectares are actively managed for shooting in the UK creating proven (PACEC, 2014) conservation benefits and preserving important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, in particular farmland birds. UK shooting providers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds every year and maintain over 25,000ha of wild-bird cover.
We’re proud to promote enjoyment of fieldsports and the countryside. There are three guiding principles to everything we do on Fieldsports Channel:
    ▶ Shoot responsibly
    ▶ Respect the quarry
▶ Ensure a humane, clean and quick kill

Personally I have never shot a woodcock and had several pass me on the peg. I just doff my cap at them, there just aren't enough around to shoot them for your ego.

Absolutely agree, there is no reasonable person who would shoot them. They do no harm and there's no meat on them. If your just into shooting to hear a bang then you should stick to the clays. Sustainably farmed species and pests are one thing but killing anything that moves is as moronic as pouring milk out in supermarkets.

Theres actually roughly as many wood cock as black birds, they're not as endangered as people think and as long you shoot sustainable numbers I don't see the harm. Personally I'll only ever shoot 1 when I'm out rough shooting.

3 of the pheasant shoots i go on don’t shoot Woodcock ,and the guns are told in no uncertain terms at the start of the day they won’t be allowed back if they do. Don’t like the idea of a ban on shooting them ,but I would like to see more shoots not shooting them. I don’t think they are that testing to shoot anyway, stick to the Pheasants and tip your hat to the Woodcock.👍

Refreshing to see so many comments on here from presumed shooting enthusiasts advising against shooting woodcock. It’s just a shame that this sensible thinking appears to be lacking from the people fronting their organisations in the video. To me it’s quite simple, woodcock numbers are declining and it makes absolutely no sense to shoot this species until at least the trend has been reversed. I find it incredible that the people in the video are trying to justify shooting them, it would appear that they’ve abandoned reason for madness simply because they don’t like Wild Justice. It’s not a good look.

I'm a Hunter from Ireland. I hunt birds, but I don't Creabhar (what we call woodcock). In my opinion, they're tiny, there is feck all meat on them in comparison to Pheasant or even Grouse. If my country is anything to take from there's probably thousands of Wood Pigeon in the UK, shoot them instead. On the population on Woodcock, there's a decline all over Europe and this goes for literally all birds, its mostly because of habitat loss. But I'd say just leave the Woodcock alone. There's plenty of Pheasant and Wood Pigeon to go around

The problem here in Ireland is that some shooters are shooting large bags of woodcock and snipe. They are doing this here because pheasants , grouse are gone too scarce to hunt here due to wildlife habitat loss due to intensive farming practices in parts of the country. i think shooters should release more reared game such as partridge and pheasant and shoot very little snipe or woodcock. Wild game is under huge pressure as it habitat is continually cleared away on farms.

Easily solved, just update every year, or even through seasons. There's no real reason to shoot woodcock now, so I don't see any problem with an indefinite hiatus until it can be shown that shooting then is worthwhile for conservation. An outright ban just seems ludicrous.
