    Yeah, that second row is tricky, but I think what they meant was "do (skip 1, SC, skip 1, 5 DC in one stitch) over and over and thenskip 1 and do a SC to finish off the last scallop".

      yes, that's why it says "alternately" for the scallops, and then "lastly" for that ending stitch.

    • @polyknittery
      @polyknittery ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, the “lastly” was dead giveaway if you’re outside of it and not doing it, but as the person who has to do it, it’s sometimes hard to think clearly in the moment. 😅

  • @linr8260
    @linr8260 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    For the top/bottom discrepancy, one thing I was thinking when you reached that part and struggled to parse the "eight stitches in two stitches" part is that it might have wanted you to crochet not into one stitch and then the other, but instead into the loop formed by those two stitches. That way, you still have a round scallop to crochet your next row into, and it keeps going that way even when you increase the number of stitches.
    It's just a theory, but maybe worth taking a look at?

    • @linr8260
      @linr8260 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And by "the loop" I mean the hole formed when you've crocheted several times into one single stitch on the previous row. I hope this makes sense orz

    All I know is I still have trouble making my brain compute MODERN crochet and knitting patterns (it doesn't seem to like managing all the abbreviations), so the fact that you got such beautiful stitch work out of this at all is a feat to me!

    What a cool idea for Nutella to pick the pattern for Karina. Plus she gets the treat afterward!

  • @draughtoflethe
    @draughtoflethe ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My first inkling that something was going awry was when the pattern called for "one pound of wool" and you had a tiny ball of lace weight yarn sitting in front of you. I tried to imagine how much yardage a pound of lace yarn would make and was envisioning something afghan-sized.
    I kind of suspect the pattern may have wanted you to stick with double-crochets throughout rather than switching to singles, and was just ambiguous with the terminology. As another commenter said, it may also have wanted single large scallops rather than smaller double-scallops, working between the two stitches rather than dividing the scallop crochets among them. I'd be curious to see what the outcome would be if you revisited this pattern with some of the changes suggested in the comments, at a more human-appropriate gauge size.
    Ultimately though, I still think you ended up with a really pretty final project that actually fits Nutella beautifully! Not necessarily a failure at all -- you just succeeded at making something other than what the pattern intended.

    Were do you think I went wrong?? I think there were multiple places along the way - though I'm still a bit confused about the different pattern on the top vs the bottom, what do you think?

    • @TheMayLight
      @TheMayLight ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In addition to whats already been said about yarn and hook sizes, i find what @linr8260 sais about crocheting the '8' inbetween the 'two' stiches sounds very logic to me. then, yes i think the outcome would also change if you crochet a plain=slipstitch and double=single cs ...aaand i think you got the beginings for the individual rows not quite right - looks like you were trying to ceep the edge more like a rectangle when it maybe truely should fan out so that the circle could close in the front and hang nicely. the form you approached leaves a gap in the front. I like your endevours in any case :) and it suits Nutella really nice!

    • @tamsinspellwell
      @tamsinspellwell ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How sure are you about the double being a modern single crochet? Because I would very much expect that to be a modern US treble (German: doppeltes Stäbchen), because the whole scallop appears to be growing in size at this point. I also agree with what other people have said that instead of splitting the eight stiches over the previous two plain, they might have wanted you to work them in between the two plain, so you still get a proper scallop.

    • @idasvenning3892
      @idasvenning3892 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so late to the party but I'm confident long, double, and treble are supposed to mean double, treble, and double treble in modern US terms. I'm kinda basing this off the fact that in Swedish, these stitches are called pillar, double pillar, and treble pillar, which (I assume) has to do with the number of yarn overs each stitch requires. This way the stitches get progressively bigger, plus the fact that you are working with less and less tension.

    For what it's worth, if you did want to make one that's human sized, I would absolutely watch you figure out the pattern as it was intended. Mystery patterns are really fun (I actually watch Just Vintage Crochet as well!) but translating the pattern into the finished object when you know where you're going is usually much more informative. I want to start knitting and crocheting some vintage stuff (more 40's and 50's for me, I think) and there is definitely a learning curve!

    I'm pretty sure when a 19th century pattern calls for Berlin Wool, it is a light DK weight. Berlin Wool is now called tapestry wool and was used for Berlin wool work (which was cross stitch or another form of counted thread embroidery worked in wool). It is a very smooth, DK weight wool.

  • @planningtolive_thebestlife453
    @planningtolive_thebestlife453 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was absolutely fantastic to watch!! So entertaining!!!! As someone who crochets it was interesting to see how you interpreted the instructions. I think you were right when you thought the plain stitch could be a slip stitch. And when they switched to saying double I probably would’ve kept doing double crochets the whole way. Although it was super weird that they wanted to split the 8 double crochets between the 2 slip stitches. I don’t know how that was supposed to work out.
    And a funny note about only working through the front loop, if you consistently do that it can have the effect of curving the work towards the front (same if the back loop only is worked) and that is a feature of some patterns I’ve done!
    Another note, the crochet should take the final general shape as you’re working it without the need for blocking. For instance, when it was ruffling at the beginning that was an indication that the stitches were not correct. Blocking is still useful to really define the stitches but if your piece is wonky while you’re making it then likely something is wrong.
    I also think that at the sides it would’ve looked smoother if you’d made half scallops (3 double crochet) when starting with a scallop. You’d have gotten a straight edge as a result. That would’ve been easier to work your treble scallop edging into.
    I look forward to your next mystery pattern!!!

    Why did they change the stitch names? It was plain = sc, now it is double crochet = sc. If the scallops were US doubles, I would think the next row with more stitches would have a US treble (a taller stitch). The rows seem to be increasing in with. Should it be increasing in height too?

    I think maybe the "double" is supposed to be a modern US half double crochet. That may be why the bottom looked so different. Either way, I think I may give this a go with some worsted weight yarn, and a 5.5 or 6 mm hook. Hopefully, I can look fractionally as cute as Nutella in it ❤
