A good strop with some gunny juice after sharpening always adds a nice final touch. Sometimes I have to hone the blade after sharpening to smooth out some of the aggressiveness before stropping.
I have a Benchmade bugout I put titanium scales and screws and tritium in 3 places, I wanted to sharpen it myself but after seeing you do your,, art.. I realized hiring a pro like you might be a better idea.
I would say get some kitchen knives, and some cheaper edc, and just go at it. Learn how to sharpen. It’s a lifelong skill you will use, and extremely satisfying. If you already know how to sharpen, dont be afraid of making a few mistakes. As long as it gets sharp, thats really all that matters. The experience cant be substituted. If you just don’t wanna go that route, feel free to send it my way. Just email me jefjewell@gmail com
Thank you for the vid. I like S90V and have found that I have to strop to keep the keenness, as well. I have a mini freek S90V, but didn’t get the bugout in that steel. You’re no slouch when it comes to sharpening, but I have to agree that Michael is on another level compared to us mortals. 😎
Thanks for watching! Yea mike is on a whole other level. I’d love to sit and watch him sharpen a few knives from start to finish. He’s got mad talent 👍
Good video Jef!! I finally got around to ordering my 2500 Gritomatic sic stone !! Can’t wait to put some fresh edges on some blades!! Thanks as always for all the knowledge and thanks for sharing brother 👊
It’s a solid little knife. Handles can be flexible with pressure depending on which scales you get. I don’t really mind that personally but I’m sure some hate it.
I've been there. I usually can't stand it and go back to around 1000 grit till I get a small burr and apex again. Results are the same a lot if the time though. 😄
@@Jef And i hope you feel better as well my brother, I love your videos i’ve been watching you for a while and You underestimate yourself and how well you really do sharpen and how good you are..anyways I think your the best and I learned from you and your videos keep inspiring, good bless brother"
Thoose gritomatic stones always seams to work good. Have you tried magnacut yet? Im absoluttely in love with it got a chef knife in it on its way from aaron
I just sharpened my s90v as well but damn the belly to the tip is not sharp ! and my sratch pattern I can't seem to fully hit the shoulder no matter what I do (and yes I do get a burr), any tips bro ? the flat portion I am able to get it ridiculously sharp
Just an idea: are you sharpening the microbevel? Me personally would sharpen it from the top of the entire bevel and working out the microbevel and blend it all into a nice shallow convex.
Are you following the factory grind? I’ve found they are sometimes at different angles. Other than following what i show, developing a burr across the whole edge, and removing it. I would recommend getting some magnification on it as well and verify you are hitting the apex
Hey, I've been going back and forth buying either sv90 yojimbo or sv30 everyone says the basic difference is less sharpening needed, but this review has me thinking the 130$ difference is not worth it. The 30 being easier to sharpen, might as well stay to that if they are pretty much the same being you state that fine edge loses it's razor edge fast.
If cutting cardboard all day is your gig, s90v will hold a working edge longer. The terms easy and difficult get used often but really it boils down to what abrasive you are using. If utilizing diamond, cbn, or silicone carbide, on s90v, there isnt much difference sharpening it than s30v. However, if you use alumoxide stones, your gonna find it takes a long time to grind an edge. Which is better? Which sharpens easier? It really is rooted in what you are doing, and what abrasives you have.
Develop a burr on one side of the knife, from tip to heel. Then, and only then, flip to the other side, and repeat. After that, remove the burr, and strop. The knife should be sharp at this point. I have tutorials on my channel, demonstrating my technique, should you care to explore it. 👍
Im fairly new to sharpening I use Dmt dia stones rough and fine takes me an hr + to do what you just knocked out I get there just takes me a long time any thoughts?
With time, speed comes. Don’t rush things. Ive spent well over 8 hrs sharpening just one knife. It does happen. Keep in mind my videos are edited down as well. Much of the time i spend inspecting the edge, is cut out. Although i show the entire process, it is condensed. Many of my older videos ran into the hour + time frame. So dont be alarmed 👍 you’re not doing anything wrong
Love the weight. It is one of the reasons I fell in love with the bugout to begin with. The CF flexes a little, like the blue version, albeit, not as much. For me, they are fantastic
I have the CF s90v bug out and love it. Great edge retention. I hit it on the strip twice a week give it take. I love the weight of the CF version. I have had g10 and polymer handles on this same blade. I go back to the CF every time
Best way to sharpen any blade but also requires enough time spent developing the skill. Most guys aren't willing to put in the time. And I'm sure it's also one of the easiest ways to mess up and edge...done wrong. :)
S30v will hold a decent edge for awhile but cardboard is pretty aggressive. Honestly for that stuff, a utility box cutter, truly is, the best choice. Those blades can be sharpened as well. Takes only a few passes per side and they come back nice and sharp
Yes, you can sharpen s90v on si but you are NOT sharpening the vanadium carbides as they are much harder than the si stone. It will feel sharp, but will never hold the edge possible with a proper stone. Which of course why lapping brings it back so quickly. KnifeMaker
Show me, with this brand of stones, vs any diamond, you care to use. Ill take the pepsi challenge, any day. I get better test results and real world use, off these, than any diamond i have tried. If you can prove me wrong, that it will ever turn up, in real world use, ill sing a different tune.

I’ve used gunny. It’s actually pretty decent stuff. Most diamond doesn’t agree with me, but I’d repurchase that brand 👌

Yea man let me know what ya think! Gritomatic's sic stones are just awesome. Love to hear how you feel about em..Speed, feedback, friability etc
Enjoyed the video. I haven't bought a new knife in over a year. Think maybe the bugout should be my next purchase.

If you still haven't pulled the trigger. I have one and I love it.
That's a great video thank you!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching 👊
Jeff the video you just made was perfect bcs I just wanted to see how you held that specific knife to sharpen
Right on! Hope it helps

Yea thats what I should have done. i was just trying to get the video made. Itll get dull soon enough and need a new edge 😁
Nice Work!
Thank you!
Jeff..I know this is a old video...but what is in the bottle you used and what is the tempt of the water you are soaking the stones in?
The water is just room temp/cold water, from the tap. The bottle is the same. Just plain, room temp, tap water.
And I’m sorry I was sick that’s why couldn’t get back but I have the s30 v version
Sorry to hear that. I just got over some nastiness myself. Hope ya feel better soon!

Are you applying pressure on both strokes? Like forward and back or just presssure in one direction?
Both. Although it is lighter, unintentionally, on the back stroke
I find that my s90v (mini freek) loses it razor sharp edge within a week of moderate use and dulls rather quickly
I find it too lose that razor edge quickly as well. Itll keep a working edge forever, just don’t expect it severe thread cleanly
@@Jef well if I go with s30v instead, well that working edge stay pretty good too cutting tons of cardboard daily?

You state you used the .5 before the 2.5. I would quess you meant 5.0 before the 2.5.
I used them in order of micron level. It sounds like i misspoke. 1 micron - 0.5 micron - finishing on 0.25 micron.

What's the angle inclusive ?
Sitting dead on the money at 20º per side, so 40º inclusive
Wow! the bevel’s so even! 🔥 (not your best work!?!)
Thanks 🙏
I was referring to the sharpness in my self-deprecation 😁
And here I sharpen for 3 minutes and wondered why it's not as sharp as when I bought it 🫠
