That was one of the greatest games I’ve seen in any World cup. Two powerhouses trading punches and not holding back.
This was the start of the "French curse" for the Brazil football. Three losses in a row in World Cup knockout matches (in 1986, 1998 and 2006).
1998 they drugged Ronaldo Nazario, otherwise they had no chance before Brazil. The two other occasions were fair and square victories.
They almost met again in 2018 and if that happened, Brazil would lose again

@@josuedelaguilarios2387they didn’t drugged him, it was voodoo, the French president at that time paid a very high ranked Haitian voodoo priest who’s well known all over the world to do voodoo so that France can win. The voodoo priest best friend was telling what happened. He said that before the game he told him that France was going to win 3-0, and that he had put a spell on Ronaldo to neutralize him, that’s why he was sick before the match. Those things are hard people believe, but they exist, our world looks simple, but it’s not, it’s a crazy world we live in.

still remember this game; Zico, Platini & Socrates - the 3 top names of this game all missed a penalty (well Zico scored the shoot out, but he missed the one in extra time)

Best. Match. Ever. I was almost 9 years old when I saw it. My favorite player was Michel Platini. The speed and skill showed in this match is incredible, especially when you consider how hot it was. Drama, an unfair penalty, a hero goal keeper, a shoot-out... this game had everything.
I remember Socrates had made 60 straight PKs going into penalties and Platini hadn't missed in three years. Both missed their PK.

Zico and Sócrates executed their shots very well, the problem was that Joël Bats saved very well...
What a game this was. Because it wasnt a high scoring encounter and neither team made the final i feel its been forgotten about to a certain degree. The likes of platini and socrates making their world cup swan song. A great game.
France, led by Michel Platini, two years earlier, had won the UEFA Euro hosted in France. And like Brazil, they were playing good, attacking football.
...and because of this match Brazil didn't repeat their glory of 1970 in the same host country.

Joel Bats is fantastic keeper, one of the most intelligent france goalkeeper. I always support France since Euro 1982, when I was a kid and very proud when they won WC 1998 and 2018. Unfortunately France never has legend goalkeeper and striker in tournament since Kopa and Fontaine . They just always brilliant in teamworks and midfielder. But when France in tournament, I will be on my couch with popcorn waiting for Blanc kisses Barthez head.

It's true, Brazil has never played so fabulously as then, but they faced a great generation of France with Platini at the fore. With Poland, already weak at that time, the 1/8 round went smoothly, but a real test came in the quarter-finals.

I was in tears that day after Brazil lost...I was a broken sad young fan itt.. Brazilian football died after that..ther style was so beautiful to watch in the 70s and 80s

It's pretty much the opposite. It's one of the weakest Brazilian teams ever. ALL the champions, plus the 1950/1998 Brazil, were much better than this team.

France 1986: 8th final = ITALY, 1/4 final = BRAZIL, semifinal = GERMANY and if it had been in the final it was against ARGENTINA.
Impossible course even if France was certainly the best team of 1986. I always thought that the France of Platini was superior to the Argentine of Maradonna, but it is not always the best who wins ...

We were mediocre in '86. Too many of the 'old guard' were still involved. And as world champions we qualified automatically so we arrived in Mexico without that competitive edge qualifying gives you.
And that's why I cried for the first time watching a football match.
This was a match of brilliant moments, and I miss them all in this video.
The penalty was sucked by the most overestimated player, I think. There are so many football geniuses in Brazil, and many of them in that team. Brazil vs. Germany would be the highlight of this World Cup.
