      The 2nd little triad chord is Dadd9 (not same shape as 1st chord D6); the 3rd of the chord is F# on the 3rd string 11th fret, not the G on the 12th. Try it; sounds like the recording.

    If you’re new to this picking pattern, and you’re trying to get it down, I recommend practising for half an hour and then giving yourself a break for half an hour or so before coming back to it. I found that when I came back to it, I had internalised the pattern in the muscles and it was easier.
    What a beautiful song; definitely worth learning 😊 everything about it is positive from the beautiful imagery in the lyrics to this wonderful guitar line. It’s just a completely positive song on all levels.

    He’s so right: the beauty of that one added sliding note in the beginning elevates the piece and illustrates how the Beatles put magic into the song to tug at the listener’s heart and pull them in, wanting more. Geniuses, they were.

    I was a luthier in a NYC shop that Joe Walsh frequented a lot. One day he picked up an old Martin and played this song, sounded like Angels. He told me he spent quite a bit of time an effort to play this song. Years later George Harrison told him it was all done with 2 guitars. Joe joked that he spent all this time working it out only to find out it was 2 guitars playing simple passages.

      Yet it has the exact same picking pattern as Julia.....with a couple very minor tweaks where you change it in 1 or 2 places for a beat, they both have the same right hand. I wonder if the story of Donovan teaching John Lennon the picking pattern is true then?? The Beatles layered a lot...I wouldn't be surprised if Lennon had laid it down in this style, then Harrison added some slide stuff to it later. The 2 guitar thing sounds good, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were done on different tracks, and one just accented what was doing done originally. Both are gone, so I guess we'll never know 100% how they layered it.

    I heard an interview with Donovan a couple of years ago, when he mentioned that he taught John to play in that "claw hammer" style, when they were learning TM in India.

      Wish I knew which one and where, cause SOMETHING doesn't sound right, but I can't pinpoint it. The first one he plays sounds off to me. I'm probably wrong, but it's driving me nuts. That first chord just doesn't sound right to me for some reason.

    • @taxisteve929
      @taxisteve929 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only difference I saw on this from what I've always played is on the G chord....looks like he frets x55033 and I fret 550033, after moving from D to C to G at the end of the verse. But he changes the picking pattern so it sounds fine. Remember it's drop D tuning.

  • @taxisteve929
    @taxisteve929 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Been playing almost exactly this way for years....very minor difference in like 2 spots, like when I play a G at the end of the verse, I pick up the low E on the 6th fret because the drop D, 330066. I like keeping the picking pattern true that way. Also, the same "picking pattern" as Julia for the majority of the tune, except for one part where it changes for a walk down but goes right back. Glad to see others playing it this way!! The intro is so nice, when doing it solo, I like to repeat the intro between verses....also gives me time to remember words if I forget. lol
    Just "Travis Picking"....just learn the picking pattern. The chord shapes are easy for this tune....Julia has a lot more stretching, but same pattern.
    Lennon plays on Julia, buried on the first track, and you need to hear the raw track to hear him play it. Lennon was supposedly spending a weekend with Donovan, and Donovan was playing some travis style, and Lennon liked it so much, he wound up writing 3 songs with the same picking style!!!!

    If you listen to the original recording it is definitely played on 2 guitars. The bass string runs are a different tone entirely to the higher strings just for starters.... completely different tone.....listen to it. This number is by far my favourite song of all time....not just fav Beatles number but fav number full stop. Number 2 is Brown Sugar by the Stones....IMHO greatest rock number ever recorded. Those were the days of song writers and musicians....long gone now

    I've noticed a lot of players doing this will pick up their middle finger on the F#, 1st string, when playing the bass rundown, but that F# has to be kept in their like a pedal tone. Good job!! I love the slides. They talk about a 2nd guitar, and I would guess the Donovan story is true, and Lennon played exactly what you're playing, maybe without the slides, and Harrison came over that with the slides.

    Thanks for you videos! A nice variation on Travis picking. Donovan taught Lennon this in India and John was mesmerized by it. The Beatles recorded several Lennon songs with this picking pattern after that. Dear Prudence, Happiness Is A Warm Gun and of course Julia. :

    I have only been playing for a little over 2 months but thought i might give this song a go, the beatles and this song in particular are what made me want to learn. But everyone made it look way harder than it is (the right handed part) and i couldnt figure it out. So today i watched your video guitar in hand and learned the intro in a couple of hours, still getting faster but almost there. Thank you so much!!! I hope to play the whole song by the end of the month! Not many 15 year old beginners can say they can play Dear Prudence xD

    New subscriber here - questo va molto bene!
    I've been playing for decades and notice that my versions drift away from the originals all the time. This is to be expected, but seeing how they actually played it gave me a lot of insight.
    The only suggestion I have is that you could simplify the explanation by referring to the chords by name after describing the fingering just once, such as "this is a G played like an open D on the 7th fret" and so on.

    Very good tutorial sir, thank you! I discovered the channel by the videos of vocal analysis and subscribed right after the First watch. It is very nice to see a large Number of guitar tutorials on the Beatles' music as well, and this one is one of my High valued masterpieces of John Lennon's composing genius. My one and only minor ''complain" is that you didn't get Technical with the sort of the chords at the beggining, at the High fret positions and the bridge, and didn't talk much about how the ranks of the leading harmony (probably here in D) come into play. It was mostly about finger placing and fret numbering, but as you have proven with your highly advanced vocal videos it could be a bit more analytic.But apart from that, your videos are Near perfection! Your passion is shared as your manners make it flow out of your tutorials, and also the inner appreciation and love for their ingenius compositions here in the Web Community. Saluti dalla Grecia!

    I play and sing this song and always skipped the intro / outro until now I got it thanks! The droning aspect is interesting. When I hit position 0, where the video is at ~11:30, my left hand cant do what he does, so I play a MUCH easier compromise way : D D7 Gmaj7/D Daug
    only using the first three strings which looks like: 232, 212, 002, 332 and sounds good to me. Its not spot on but pretty close and when Im singing and playing, I need to conserve some of my limited brain power. After one verse I drop the picking and just strum that. BTW Its about Mia Farrow's sister Prudence Farrow in India who wouldnt come out of her tent she was meditating so much.

    Thanks, Galeazzo! That was an excellent tutorial on one of my favorite songs. Very clear and precise. This is one of the first songs I learned when I started teaching myself to play guitar 7 years ago. My technique on this song has changed several times over the years as I learned more and grew more comfortable with my instrument, but still is not 100% exact, maybe 90-95% since I picked it out by ear instead of having instructions, and I like to give other artist's songs my own twist and therefore rarely attempt to play anything exactly like the original. I came on here to brush up and polish my Prudence licks because my 11 year old is having a talent show at her school in which she is supposed to sing, and she asked me to come and accompany her on guitar. This is her favorite song in the world. Thank you for the great video! On a side note, are you from Russia? I saw a documentary a few years ago about Russian Beatles fans and apparently The Beatles are SUPER popular in Russia. Like, even more so than the West! Apparently they were banned during the Cold War because those in power(Kruschev?) believed them to be a bad influence on youth culture, promoting individuality and rebellion against authority; but everybody had bootleg albums and played Beatles songs on Balilaikas and whatnot. (I also play Balilaika.) The Beatles never played in the USSR, so it was a huge deal to everyone when Sir Paul played a show in Red Square a few years ago.

    Another amazing video! May I ask why you recommend fretting the 5-5-3 chord with middle-ring-index instead of ring-pinky-index? Ring-pinky-index feels more natural, but I'm sure you have a good reason for recommending middle-index-ring.

    • @aerixj
      @aerixj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Never mind -- I think I've answered my own question. Playing it the way you recommend makes it easier to slide down from the previous chord. When I try to use my pinky, I often end up on the D and G strings instead of G and B.

    Is missing a D note (the D string) in each chord. Is not 100% right, but thank you. I love your videos.

    I know this video is 6 years old but when the picking changes for those couple of chords, are you supposed to end on a G string instead of D like the regular fingerpicking pattern? Everywhere I look online it seems that all that changes is the removal of the E bass note in the pattern but not any other strings. Could someone please clarify if this was a mistake or correct, I'm a beginner, thanks!

    In that first chord of the verse, can I use my index instead of the pinky and leave the G string open?
