Jack is not South African slang, it's American English. It's just the way he says it that put them off. "I ain't have jack" is the way it's usually said, not "i have jack"

jack is a very old (13th century) term to designate the average peasant - the man at the bottom of the social pyramid. Jack Shit is American. But the slang may also have originated from Old French "jacques" a name that was very common and belonged to the peasants.
