My favorite animated Christmas movie as a child. When I discovered the DVD many years ago, I bought them for my sister and brother who loved this film as well. This song is incredibly beautiful and makes me very sad. I kept hoping that Scrooge and Belle would eventually get together at the end of the movie.

I am a drummer/bandleader/announcer/broadcaster. As great as the "Rudolph" special was from 1964 (I even had composer Johnny Marks on my radio show talking with me about those songs); Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol was the one that really touched me like no other. I was 9 years old when it came out, and I was so mesmerized and charmed by it. The music and production of this "cartoon" were given the same kind of energy, effort, and delicate care that they would give to create a Broadway musical...not just a cartoon!!! I loved each of the songs in its own way, but this one (and Alone in the World), still gives me a lump in my throat. It is so wonderful hearing this full version by Jane Kean. Thank you. This song, to me, is a poignant, haunting musical "oil painting."

I think this song does fit in the show as it shows both the change and what Scrooge lost. I think what feels off is that it can get away with complicated singing as it doesn't have to fit Mr. Magoo's voice limits. ("We're Despicable" doesn't have him either, but that song is comic relief.)

One of the most heartbreaking songs ever written. It's beautiful in execution, but it's incredibly upsetting in tone. That's what was so powerful about the scene between Scrooge-Magoo and Belle. His younger self refused to put her over money and wealth, when he should have put her above EVERYTHING. Belle was the best thing in his life, a good woman, and he threw her away. I would want to beat the shit out of my younger self for making such a huge mistake. Unfortunately, we cannot change the past.
That's why the ending of Christmas Carol is uplifting, no matter the version you watch. You live and learn, change for the better. It's never too late for you. For this, Scrooge found love in Bob's family. "Winter Was Warm" was Scrooge's lowest point, but it was necessary for his evolution and redemption in the final act.

It come as no surprise Jule Styne could write a song like this, the only thing that's surprising is that the producers of the Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol signed him to write a score, it's unusual considering no other widely known popular composer wrote music in those days for animated show except the Disney Company. I've always loved the Magoo Christmas Carol.

Winter was warm, summer soft that year
The winter was warm without a sign of frost
Like winter lost its way that year
    It seems as I recall
    No blossoms fell that fall
    May didn't leave at all
Or did love paint an illusion?
Now trees with a sigh stand and shiver
While their dreams fall and die, and all my dreams are there
Wrapped up somewhere in summer leaves
Oh, what I'd give to be
    To be in love again
This year the winter is cold
Will it ever be warm as it was then?

As a fanatical consumer of TV and film, I had LONG believed the music and lyrics of this show was TOP Notch. Although I am Not sufficently knowledgeable of music composition to tell you why it's great, or how it was made that way.
I am Not a big consumer of Broadway shows. But, somewhere along the way, I saw these names Styne & Merrill. Which I immediately recognized and recalled from the credits of Mr. Magoo. (Yes, I AM one of the ONLY 17 people on earth who read film credits.)
Then, upon researching this pair, I discovered that my "taste" and intuition was right. They were, at the time, among THE Leading Broadway show tune smiths. It was gratifying to have 3rd party proof of what I had suspected for decades ... that the producers of this gem pulled out all the stops. To make it as brilliant as possible. Since it really was a risky "experiment". The FIRST Ever made-for-TV Christmas Special.
No one really knew, for sure, what to expect. Would the viewing public like it? So they had to go all out. And they certainly pulled off a GREAT Achievement. Something which has entered, indelibly, into our American culture and psyche. As attested by the various comments submitted.
My I add that Jack Cassidy played the voice of Bob Cratchit. Both speaking and singing. Look at the visual character of Cratchet. He even Looks like Cassidy. He actually was a Broadway star (singer). Who made the transition to TV. (EX: in Columbo and Night Gallery). Tragically, he died in a fire, caused by Christmas Tree lights.

The tune sounds very much like it might have been composed with Garland in mind. She had already voiced a role in UPA's animated feature Gay Purr-ee (1962). Kean does a fantastic job with it--such a memorable song.

    • @timirish2563
      @timirish2563 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I suggested to the Saperstein family (which still owns the UPA catalog) some years back that they might commission a stage version of Magoo's Christmas Carol, but they were not interested. Magoo had made them affluent, but I think they were tired of him. Hank Saperstein was dead. Had he still been with us, I think this would have made it to the stage at last. As one colleague said of Hank at his funeral "I respected your Dad so much--he really knew how to milk a property..."
Composer Julie Stein was at his peak during this time and delivered a score fit for the Broadway stage. Even the structure of this sixty-minute musical is much like a Broadway play--with the Cratchit family front and center as the chorus. This is why the Ghost of Christmas Present arrives first in this version--so the audience gets to know the Cratchits sooner and we have Jack Cassidy's show stopping Brightest Christmas song to cheer the audience right away. Cassidy, often dismissed as a lightweight and ham, steals the show immediately and is in fine voice. Dickens original novella starts out a bt grim, then gets sadder and more grim and only becomes upbeat after Scrooge's conversion. A theater audience couldn't bear to see the misery of the entire brilliant original brought to life. I am still terrified by the excellent British version (starring Alister Sim) when it plays during the holidays. It terrifies and brings a few tears, but it remains the definitive film version. And it's funny too. I have noticed a little touring stage production of Magoo's Christmas in California over the last few Yuletides--I doubt if such a small scale production bothered obtaining the rights to the original script or songs.

    • @bmr622
      @bmr622 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The British version is by far my favorite and I watch it every year, but mainly as someone who also loves the book, because Alistar Sim plays the part perfectly. Not just cold but vulnerable. The screenplay takes many bothersome liberties, Scrooge buy-out of Fezzwig, Fanns' death and Alice(belle) becoming an old maid to name a few. But to me Sim is Scrooge. Merry Christmas

  • @earthlightsmusic2743

A thought about the songs and their text: the character "Belle" in the _Christmas Carol_ book is believed to be named after Charles Dickens' lost love Maria Beadnell Winter, which might have inspired "Winter Was Warm". The section about Belle's married life, not found in the abridged edition, is where she is named at all, and also where her husband describes Scrooge, near the end of Marley's life, as "quite alone in the world, I daresay".

I always thought, before Internet, that Judy Garland did sing this song and was uncredited (the cartoon production company is the same that did Judy's Gay Purree cartoon), because Kean in her lower voice did bear a strong resemblance. Listening to this, it's clear it is Jane Kean and she is very good. I don't consider it loose but "subtle" and the best rendition. Sadly, your studio original master is not available as a CD and of course the DVD is shorter but at least it's available. Actually, too bad Jim Bailey never did perform this (as Judy Garland.)
No one writes music like this any longer.

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol was a yearly tradition that was shown every year. I was sad when T.V. became so political .. just like so many things I guess ⏺️❗️🎄

EDIT 2021: I just got a full copy of this version of the soundtrack-- e-mail me at legotronn2 at gmail if anyone's interested.
Wait, so-- were you lucky enough to snag the digital album before it got taken down? Is there any place you know where it could still be found? It seems like the company that was selling it has dissolved, and the audio on the actual Blu-Ray is so muted that it just doesn't do the recording justice... At any rate, thank you SO much for what you've shared here-- this is a serious miracle. : D If there's any chance of the rest of the album being shared now that it's not being sold, it'd be much, much appreciated.

"Belle, Belle, please don't go! Wait!" But it's in the immutable past. Can't blame Scrooge too much, as I'd like to change the outcome of a few things in the past. Wouldn't you?

Just watched the current Magoo's Christmas Carol. They cut this song. So disappointed. It was the most beautiful song of the production. Bah humbug to whoever butchered this wonderful movie.

They been doing that for years. Damn the commercials. Show the whole thing.

@@mandelabutterfly9162 I remember the original version with the backstage comedy. Wish I could get my hands on a copy of that version. I have seen other abbreviated versions, but this is the first one that I noticed Winger was Warm was deleted. Magoo's Christmas Carol WAS a musical, and they had some good, original songs it it. But Winter was Warm was far and away the best song in the movie.

In the version I recorded off the air, all the songs were abridged, this one among them. I'd have been really annoyed to find this song missing entirely. BTW, Belle referred to a sleighride, but how can you go on one of those in a Winter lacking snow?

For a brief time the soundtrack was available to buy as digital files, and I found it on a site that apparently forgot to remove it as as soon as I posted about it on Facebook, it was removed. I've sung "Winter" a few times, always loved it, and got the sheet music from the Styne Office (who were thrilled anyone knew of it) which had the complete version before I had ever heard it. Still ridiculous that there hasn't been an issue of the complete score with the demos, must be some legal nonsense involved of some kind.

That digital soundtrack wasn't complete either, I dubbed the Overture off the bonus doc on the DVD, and the chorus is somehow left off of the closing number leaving Backus's voice in particular exposed.
Douglas Sills did a concert version, there's a sampler video on TH-cam - I would love to hear the whole thing, with Magoo's songs really sung.

All the comments here capture the timeless nature of this song which so resonates since 2020. The loss of love and loss of loved ones is profound as Dickens knew and as this lovely classic conveys. Snow melts and is gone. Heartbreak leaves a scar. And how alone everyone in the world has felt at some point since 2020. So cherish this song and show’s score!
