The Philippines considers reviving nuclear plant to meet energy demand

  • The Philippines is looking to revive its dormant nuclear power plant to solve its energy crisis.
Experts say it could reduce soaring power prices by up to 70 percent.
The Bataan Nuclear Power plant was built in the 1970s and was the first in Southeast Asia. But it never opened.
It was mothballed and past presidents have been hesitant to recommission it, saying that it was a reminder of the excesses of former President Ferdinand Marcos’ regime.
Al Jazeera’s Jamela Alindogan reports from Bataan in the northern Philippines.

This nuclear plant sits on top of a volcano: Mount Natib is a dormant yet a potentially active volcano, in an earthquake-prone region. This concern must be evaluated through thorough seismological, paleo-seismic, volcanological and engineering studies. It might be too risky. The Chernobyl Disaster up until now has been a ghost town because of the nuclear plant that exploded in year 1986. Who in the world would put a nuclear plant in a volcano? We are still paying taxes for this up to now.

Yeah it was the 1st, but it doesn't mean that it was running as smoothly as other power plants. It was covered in controversy as the BNPP was built on near a major geological fault line, both covered by the Mt. Mayon and Mt. Natib. It was also mothballed since the requirements to operate the powerplant required extensive maintenance that would drain up the country's economy, unless it was privatized of course. There were also safety concerns during testing and they found right around 4,000 defects in the power plant.

Same thoughts here but nung sinearch ko siya sa google scholar yung finding would suggest when compared to solar energy, Nuclear PP doesn't consume a expase of land and yung effectivenes if rainy season is low. Yung sa wind same problems padin but wind mills are not long term and it still needs probably hundred or thousands of them para maka propagate ng energy tantamount to that of nuclear PP's so consuming din siya sa land area if sa lupa siya kinonstruct sa hydro naman yung regular cycle ng water from sources down to streams and other waterways ma didsturb so does the marine ecosystem. Yug problem lng sa Nuclear PP's is the threat of radioactive contamination from its uranium fuel, although it doesn't release CO2's and other greenhouse gas but yung threat ng radioactivity is high. Doon lng siya nagka conflict. So ayon I hope nakatulong yung comment ko

Solar is unlikely to provide much energy considering that the Philippines Is an archipelago which provides less land area, wind could potentially provide a portion of the energy supply thanks to abundant coastal lands, but none can serve as a base power to supply continuous power. Nuclear could provide a solution to that while also decreasing power prices.
