The many followed the false priests teaching works not of faith, but works of iniquity. The works of faith are about speaking the truth, but the works of dead faith are those of the hireling in Romans 4, that do not trust in God, but their hands. the borrower and lender of usury, the creditor AND DEBTOR of usury BOTH go to the bottomless pit - if they don't repent ( Isaiah 24 ). " It is so amazing to me how the wicked continue in their deeds and so many follow their ways believing that they can achieve anything greater than saving face, and losing all of the iLL GOTTEN gains & yet not understand the importance of Christ Jesus' words when He said " how will you escape from being thrown into Hell ". Could they escape the eternal judgement in the lake of fire, by a continuation of filling the graveyards in their unholiness? It just doesn't seem likely & not even remotely logical. Not a jot or tittle of the law will be changed before He returns & He did not come to abolish the law or the major or minor prophets that He sent before His first advent, but He came to fulfill the law and those prophets He sent, to straighten the paths of the wicked, from their crooked paths.
