I've been there and to Zanzibar and it was the only place me and my best friend were hassled. We had some guy following us around Zanzibar, screaming at us to give him money. Went to lots of places in Africa even Johannesburg and didn't feel as unwelcome as we did in Tanzania. I would have felt the same as you if I were alone. It's hard being in a foreign place, especially as a woman. I'm even shorter than you and have the strength of a 9 year old boy haha. There are some great places to travel alone though, Asia is one. I drove around Australia solo with my dog. Never felt unsafe.
@@DrLauren-Jane What's travel? I feel like I've forgotten what travel is over the past two years. I've not left my state (I left once to go to Canberra for a women's conference). I absolutely loved driving around Australia. It was so incredibly beautiful, vast and moving. I loved Vietnam when I went and Cambodia (the poverty was really confronting though). I sent you a message on instagram. Not sure if you check there. I deleted the app and only check it via the website. Trying to curve the social media addiction. :)
Sorry to hear this happened to you :( And you definitely didn't "fail", safety always comes first! It's a unfortunate reality of solo travelling sometimes. It can be quite scary!
DO not travel alone in Africa - or many other places! I do feel that our young have been taught that 'everything is ok/ it's all a multicultural paradise out there and if you are a nice smiling happy person other people will be the same to you back !!! No. It's not like that. Do things in groups - organise your safety along with your trip - think like that and all will be well. You will then be able to enjoy other cultures and Countries while keeping the less 'appealing' aspects of your Country at a safe distance. A bit of realism is required when you start travelling.
One other point . You say you have no complaints with 'Work the World'. I would disagree with that. Their missive " we encourage you to take the local bus" seems downright lacking in a through assessment of the situation on the ground. It clearly wasn't safe/reliable to take the local bus and why your guide thought she could 'leave you to it' the next day after the experience of the bus driver taking a different route and the encounter with the hostile person 'suggesting' you walk in the water is beyond me. Your 'bus guide' should have completed a report to her manager stating what happened the moment she got back - then World of Work should have created a plan where you had transport provided to the hospital - there and back. For clarity here I am not a Med student but a Parent with children at Med School. I have also LIVED in 3 continents so am fairly experienced in pitfalls of travelling.
Do you know you’re so right and honestly if it was my daughter I’d be so mad. I think their model was based on large groups of students travelling together and I went alone and there was just no provision for that safety qise

Yeah it wasn’t great, especially alone. Any places you recommend travelling to?

Hope u safe.. There are bad apples everywhere.. Just try not focussing on them and all will be well i guess
Kudos to elective
Thanks, it wasn't so much bad apples, but a lack of structure for a single traveller. And thank you!

Ah thank you so much!

I think this is the advice I missed. Glad I got home okay tbh
