My hamster is spoiled. Won't eat Sunflower seed or pumpkin seeds in the shell. I have to remove the shell for her. OMG!! It's like having another child.
Carmela One of my hamsters was like this in the beginning! I started by removing the shell completely, then gradually left more and more of the shell on until she learned that the treat was inside the shell.

Actually my dad has mealworms but it's for his fishes in his workplace (He gives mealworms, crickets and frogs to his fishes)

@Evan Jacobs hey Evan! The fat and fibre is amazing! The protein is quite low though. Try to find one with ALOT of protein, and on the lower side of fibre if it has to be, as the fribre in your mix is very good. I suggest checking Toris description for the video, Taxonomist has written amazing articles on nutrition on the Hamster Hideout Forum. Hope this helps!

My five years being vegan and doing strength training has prepared me for calculating protein/veggies/fat for my future hamster. :D

Every hamster needs food that YOU have made to suit it's needs, her hamster might need more protein for example, which that would mess up your hamsters diet.
@Olivia B the Higgins sunburst is a really good food for hamsters, Eli loves it and he’s very healthy, so if your going to a petstore, you can buy the Higgins sunburst and it’s a high variety food, for a pretty good price around 11$. And most hamsters absolutely love it!

I once gave my hamster chicken (unseasoned) than like an hour later when I went back, I noticed he already ate it and he’s very picky.
I've noticed that some walmarts here are selling the Rosewood herb mix. I flipped out when I saw it because I was excited to try it out with my hamsters, and I think it was $3ish.

My 2 1/2 Syrian is the pickiest eater. Refuses to eat meal worms, oat spray and only eats certain seed mix while nibbling a bit on the protein pieces. He loves veggies, dried apple and whimzee chews though.

Crazy story.. My escaped. I left his cage open that night on the floor n woke up next day in cage. Cage door open. I closed it n never escaped again. Lol.
I lost my hamster and this bring back memories of him am crying now thanks to you 😭
My hamster opened the cage at night (there are two things on the top of the cage that you can open by just turning them a bit and lifting) and when I woke up I realized she had escaped and I searched ALL over the house for her. I was really scared but a couple hours later I heard some noises from behind my closet and when I looked at the top of the closet, she was just walking around there. She had crawled up by pushing her back to the wall and dragging herself to the top.😂

It is so reliving to have a reliable source of information. You truly care and it really makes the difference
For my fellow canadians who don't have access to Mazuri, I used the calculator and 50% higgins mix and 50% of the All Living Things power of 5 pellets meets the percentages she gives. I've never owned a hamster or any small rodent (Rabbit doesnt count) but Im looking into getting one.
Does this mean half of each bag combined? I’m new to this and I’m a bit confused
all living things power of 5 hamster food changed their recipe so it’s not good anymore because it’s basically like oxbow now since it’s hay based. if it says “timothy hay #1 ingredient” on the front of the bag then it’s the new recipe and it’s bad but if not you can still use it.. the power of 5 rat and mouse pellets have the same guaranteed analysis of the old recipe so it’s a way better option
A tip would be to dry herbs yourself if you can't really buy it where you live. Here they even sell these dried herb mixes for small animals in any regular drugstore, but me and a lot of other rabbit owners I know still dry them ourself. If you have a drying machine it's obvious how to do it lol. If not you can just put the plants you want to dry outside in the sun when it's warm. Make sure it won't get wet (watch the rain forecast) and leave it out there for 3 days. Then you can cut it into small pieces and storage it in an open container. After 5-6 weeks you can feed it and it will be save for your pets. Thats actually how hay is made as well.

I didn't know you where aware of botanical medicine for animals. I thought it isn't that known in America since I have never seen a TH-camr talk about it or really purposely including it it into their pets diet. Also on Instagram I often get questions about it when I mention it. In general I try to offer a big variety of these plants, but since one of my bunnies has an dental infection that the vet cannot treat anymore (surgery sadly would kill him) I focus a lot on plants that have the effect to be anti-inflammatory. So far he's doing great 😊

I was looking at the food we purchased for my son's mice that had a nice mix of pellets, seeds, dried fruits, and dried vegetables. It's Carefresh Complete Farmer's Garden. The bag says Mouse & Rat food, but I figured it would be a good combination to start my daughter's new hamster on. Turns out, it meets ALL of the requirements for protein, fat, and fiber that you recommended in this video!

I was wondering where/how you get your Mazuri blocks? I remember you are in Cananda like me and for the life of me I cannot find any to purchase or ship to Alberta. For now I am using the Sunseed Critter Cubes (which I read on Hamster Hideout are a decent alternate option).
I find it weird that my local independent pet store carries a bunch of other Mazuri products but not that one. At least they carry Higgins Sunburst.

I'll be getting a 110 quart storage bin, which is probably the minimum of 450 square inches. this channel has helped me so much, and i look forward to giving my hamster the best life possible.

Yes, you should! Almost all fruits and veggies are good for them. You can look up which ones are bad - avocado, onions, iceberg lettuce etc. Mix that up with seeds. You could also give them meal worms.

But one question is Timothy hay good for hamsters because when I was on vacation and my dad is watching my hamster he saw Timothy hay food type of stuff and he got it and I can’t find anything about if Timothy hay is good for hamsters
that food calculator was awesome! It’s very simple and easy to use!
I just used one for my pre-vet feeds class in college!
Also, using the calculator, and a couple web searches, I found that Wild Harvest Advanced Nutrition fits the bill for meeting all the nutrient requirements. It’s not too expensive either. Burgess pellets also have pretty decent protein content.

There are some you can order from europe that are great and theres a brand called robins gourmet food thats based in the us which is also good they are just a lot more expensive :) basically do a lot of research and look online, unfortunately there arent any available in pet stores though

I would love if you did a lengthy video discussing your own mix. I don't need to know what your mix is exactly, but I love to hear the more gritty details of what you choose what for crude protien/fat/etc
I bought one of those hydroponic Gardyn towers (expensive toy but really cool) to grow fresh veggies and herbs to cook for us, and after watching your videos, I realized that most of the stuff I grow there are great hamster snacks! Every thing I trim I feed to Miss Dot by hand, and let's just say she's always glad to see me! 😂

I used to breed hammies back in the day & my feed mix looked exactly like yours except that I mixed the herbs in. If I couldn't find dried veggies at the pet store I bought them in the soup aisle of my health food store (dried veggies only, not with any broth material in it). I would supplement with limited fresh fruit & veg so as not to cause wet tail or diarrhea. I wanted to caution when providing fresh food that hamsters are hoarders & will bring their food stash back to their den to unload. Fresh food has a certain moisture content & if food is left uneaten (usually by over feeding them) it rots & that is very unhealthy for rodents. Best to limit the fresh food & check all dens periodically for mold. I had one Syrian who always hoarded his fresh food so I fed him dried fruits & veg. He loved the dried strawberries. Broccoli is the only fresh food he got as he usually gobbled it down. Also, proteins weren't readily available where I live so I would substitute scrambled eggs & good quality cheese (no Velveeta plz) They loved it.

Hiii!! So I had a hamster a few years back and you have helped me soooo much! I had a 2x4 cage, herbs, meal worms, seeds, etc. I also got a lot of the enrichment u recommend and snowball did great! Now my friend is trying to get one and she cares just as much as I do about their happiness and health. Im making her a list of a bunch of necessities and other things that her hamster will need. Right now I’m on food. The old meal worms that I used to get are not sold anymore :/ I was just wondering if you could share which ones you use? Also my friend is watching all of your videos :) I just wanted to ask for her and for me if I ever get another one.
So I am new to your channel, I’ve been thinking of getting a hamster for months but I want to make sure I’m fully prepared before doing so and there are a few things I wish you could provide. Not that the information you give isn’t enough, but I still have a lot of questions about it.
I wish you could tell more about how you make your own food and show us more so we can compare to our own if we decide to do it this way. Also tell us where to get the herbs and such and how to know if they don’t have any chemicals or so that could harm the pet/hamster.

iiiPeachySwirl don’t listen to her. if a hamster has too much variety it will only eat the tasty bits and that’s really unhealthy. feed it only the same pellets then it will live way longer and healthier. please listen to me and not her
