Best food on the planet with mild weather all year around will increase your emotional serenity..The nice thing about italy is that people have a broad knowledge in many more field then just the one required to survive and this makes encounters interesting.You may not get a beatifull mansion but you get a lifestyle that is rich.

Lake Como! A lake for the ages beautiful in every way,you breathe the history,and go back in time!
I visited in November and it was fantastic out of season. Everywhere was still open but it was pretty quiet and you could enjoy a lot of the gardens with few others around. In the summer it is so popular you are in massive crowds.
Another tip is that there is a direct bus from Milan Bergamo Airport which is where Ryanair flies super cheap. So you can fly there and hop on a cheap bus that takes you directly to Lake Como for like 25€. So no need to hire a car or go via Milano to get a train or transport and once you are there you take ferries around anyway.

I live in Hawaii, I've lived in northern and southern California. I've lived in north and south Florida. I've traveled all over the world. This is the only place I dream of living.

You don't have to be rich to visit Lago di Como, you just need to afford a low cost flight to Milano and then you can take a bus.
Of course you can't go into some of the private villas but you can go into any town of the lake and also visit quite some of the historic villas and palaces that have been turned into public museums.
You probably wont be able to afford a fancy lunch/dinner in one of the many luxury restaurants but there are a lot of regular places and pizzerias where you can eat, also plenty of small business shops in which you can buy sandwiches or such... Lago di Como for us in Italy is just a geographical place, there are around 500.000 people that live in the many towns on it's shores and 99% are regular people with regular jobs, 1% maybe are the billionaire villa owners and mostly they are never even there.

I missed so much Lago di Como. Abitavo a Blevio, e dalla finestra overlooking Lago di Como I would see Bellagio and all the villas and gardens in all its magnificence. I hope I could go back to Como before leaving this world.
My Aunty Fritzenella Ellenbogen from Munchen, lived there for a year, she was a seamstress, she also knitted and sang Irish folk songs. Eventually she was taken back to Munchen where she retired.

I am from Milan, just 30 minutes far from Lake Como, which obviously I know very well.
Well, it's for sure a pleasent location, especially in the good season.
Nontheless I am always surprised of the popularity of the Lake abroad, wich is a "modern" phenomenon, maybe because of George Clooney, I don't know. Because when I was a child, some decades ago, nobody cared much about it.
Actually here in Northern Italy there are two other big lakes wich are larger and by far more beautiful, either for landscapes, either for history, villages and architectures: Lake Garda, and Lake Maggiore
I especially like Lake Maggiore (wich, despite its name - meaning "major" - is only the second largest, the largest being Lake Garda)

Hi ! Lorenzo, I do agree with you. I'm french and I will never forget my first trip to Lago Maggiore in 1999. The Mottarone montain with the cable car in Stresa. Verbana, on the swiss shore of the lake, Locarno, Ascona and Porto Ronco where Paulette Goddard and her husband the german writer Erich Maria Remarque lived. The Borromeo islands, Isola Bella and Isola Madre. Heaven on earth !
