In the U.K., the pub is the hub of socialising and drinking alcohol is considered as a rite of passage. In the Mediterranean, life does not revolve around alcohol and many young people will sit quite happily drinking the wide variety of coffees and juices available. Wine is part of the culture and does not hold any special significance and the climate is way too hot to drink spirits anyway. The whole attitude towards alcohol is very different and there is no real stigma attached to abstinence, thank goodness.

I had my first drink at 10 at home it was a Bucksfizz at Christmas, first drank in a pub at 16 and got served from 17 onwards

Our family always let the kids have a weak glass of snowball, port and lemon, during the 60s and 70s.

Nonsense and totally irresponsible. If you don’t let your kids drink till 18 you’re a bad parent. Drinking wine should be part of meal times and not seen as a big deal. You’re going to bring up someone who will go off the rails.
