    this is incredible. I've been a fan of electronic music for years and I'm baffled as to why I've never heard of her before. She is clearly a founding mother of electronic music and every single dj stands on her shoulders. So underrated and under-appreciated. She should be as famous as Jean-Michel Jarre.

      Its either sexism or exactly the oppisite, she was shy and some of the males like jarre wernt ...🤷‍♂️ but also she did corperate work making sounds for companies ? Maybe she just wasnt in the music scene as much ?

      I have no idea how I stumbled upon her- I've been following wendy carlos for decades and you'd think Suzanne would be mentioned in the same breath! So glad to have her work in my life.

      @@darkjusticemedia5621 how do you possibly find a way to bring sexism into this, it’s an incredibly niche genre that has very little coverage of course most people wouldn’t have known about her

    Her list of achievements throughout the 1980s and 1990s is astonishing: creator of the awesome and unintentionally lewd voices and sound effects in Xenon, one of the grandest of 1980s pinball games (played all the time in my college days in Allentown PA); composed "The Velocity of Love", the quintessential "pop" song of 80's New Age Radio; nominated for Best New Age album five times between 1988 and 2000; and creator of dozens of electronic commercial sounds and sound effects you've heard and take for granted. Amazing woman, quite an understated and almost totally neglected pioneer of what we now call electronica. She should be better known.

    Thank you, Los Angeles Public Library, and Suzanne, for sharing a great performance and more. Contrary to comments below, I think Suzanne's return to modular synthesis helps bridge a gap between generations, and turns a whole new audience on to modular synths and quad sound. No need for cynicism here. It's a small, small pond that modular synthesists swim in - there is no need to pee in it. It will always be a tiny corner of musical expression that is enjoyed by relatively few, and there is nothing wrong with that, nor giving adoration where it is due, no matter how "deep" your knowledge of an artist or their music goes. a 6-y/o girl or boy who happened to be at the library seeing this for the first time might get a spark of inspiration that could last a lifetime, and have no prior knowledge of Suzanne or her extensive library. That doesn't negate the experience she shared with this young person, or anyone in the audience that day, and now on TH-cam for all to enjoy.
    Thanks again to all, lovely performance!

      Modular Synthesis is the new Casio. Which means industry and all that entails (sales).

    • @RobertVeasquez
      @RobertVeasquez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is nothing inherently wrong or bad about modular or any synthesizers.
      But of tweaking knobs and choosing different sequenced ‘patterns’ constitutes a performance, then there isn’t a necessary skill to this performance.
      I love electronica, progressive music......but perhaps, ‘your 6 year old girl or boy with a few minutes of training, could accomplish this “piece of art!”

    • @__-cd9ug
      @__-cd9ug 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RobertVeasquez so what if a kid could do it? what drives your bitterness? is it a specific vision of "art"? is it the fact they might be making money from it? I say, as long as someone's able to express themselves in a way that's interesting to them, then that's good enough for me. If, beyond that, their work is interesting to other people, that's even better!
      but cynicism kills creativity, sarcasm kills inspiration. By all means, avoid it. It brings nothing to the table.
      Express your frustration in another way - music, maybe? Some other art? Do not try to tear down what you find unjustified; Build something new instead

    • @Serioko
      @Serioko 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@RobertVeasquez You seriously think a child could sculpt all of these individual sounds from raw oscillators? And then arrange them in non-repetitive interesting patterns the create evolution, ebb, and flow? Just because you don't like the content doesn't mean a child could've made it. If you want to hear a live instrument, then go watch those videos. To criticize someone's work and proclaiming it as not art is pretty weak..

    • @RobertVeasquez
      @RobertVeasquez 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Serioko First of all, I did not say I did not like it...so put your anger back in your pocket.
      And I truly believe, there are children, who have never touched a synth, who could, put together some very interesting things...
      I could never put a limit on the creative spirit of the human being.
      But it impossible to debate your post because it is filled with anger.
      You are a perfect "host" for conformity....and having such a militant post, leaves one a sense, that you could never really conduct a mature calm debate....so enjoy your anger...I stopped it at my door!

    Quadraphonic audio tracks can readily be upmixed for playback on 5.1 surround sound systems. Low frequencies from all four quadraphonic channels are combined for playback over the 5.1 subwoofer channel. The Q4 left-front and right-front tracks are mapped directly into 5.1 left-center-right channels and the Q4 right-rear and left-rear tracks are sent to the 5.1 surround channels. Such an upmix will preserve all directional sources in the original quadraphonic tracks.

    Wonderful as always to see Suzanne Ciani perform. She is a legend and pioneer in electronic music and sound design. Always focused on her music and so inventive and with none of the pretensions seen in many other artists, no dancing to her own music, no strange exaggerated or affected hand movements or weird knob twiddling hand flourishes that others indulge in. Always an inspiration. Amazing technical excellence and musicality

    I love Ciani's work! Btw, to anyone who has been to one of Ciani's live show, I have a question about the experience of the quadraphonic setup.
    I have been intrigued by the idea of spatial audio, but after some research, I realize there is a divide on whether such spatial music/speaker setup is enjoyable by the audience. For me, I am especially thinking about implementing a similar spatial sound system in my club/venue, in order to truly showcase quadraphonic sound.
    what do you think of it from your experience with hearing it live?

      Haven't been to a show by Ciani, but I have some experiences with spatial audio. I think a quadraphonic setup would be fine in a venue. When having a spatial audio setup with a lot of different channels, that's when it all falls apart in a space like a concert venue or club.
      Those big systems are generally calculated for "3D" audio on a specific location, most probably the sound engineer's one. When I tried walking around to find the best sounding spot, I noticed the sound varies wildly from place to place, but none of the places I tried had a satisfactory sound.
      Not to say these systems cannot sound great, I just mean they are better suited for an audience sitting close together in a specific location. So the variation in sound based on position is definitely something to look out for.

      I saw Suzanne Ciani last night at EartH in Hackney (London, UK) and was blown away! Truly amazing, mesmerising performance. She is so at one with the Buchla (not surprisingly as she was pretty much there with Don Buchla in the early days) and as Robaire Beckwith (in this thread) said, she is so unpretentious and not in anyway self indulgent - just incredibly skilful. The quad sound system worked really well I thought and is an integral part of her performance on the Buchla. I have experienced quad before, in the dance tent at Roskilde Festival in Denmark, back in the late 90's and it was awesome! So yeah, go for it. Also go and see a Suzanne Ciani performance, you'll be blown away!

    I've always enjoyed her work. Happy to see her still doing it. What I don't need is the dopey light show. I haven't dropped acid in 50 years, and I'm more likely to have a seizure than be "turned on" by this! Thankfully I can just listen.

    Susanne - 1:15:17 - 'There wasn't any music that was nascently quadrophonic' - But there was!! And is. Checkout a lot of liturgical and ceremonial music of the time of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrielli (around end sixteenth, beginning 17th century). Vast cathedrals with choirs of brass, voice, organ - the choirs distributed within the cathedral so you could have call-and-response between groups. And cathedrals have four corners - and various levels for each! So up to octaphonic -at least. You may also know of the free media player, PotPlayer, which can be configured to play quadraphonic recordings.

    Delia Derbyshire was ripped off by the BBC so badly, i firmly believe she became reclusive because of it's effect on her creative soul. Delias' works are fantastic, groundbreaking and essentially to me are utmost influencial.

    Considering that the Buchla has been around 50+ years it seems like it could be a little better designed ergonomically. I mean, she's having to push the patch cords out of the way to get at the controls. The device is a throwback to the synth Stone Age, but Suzanne is a goddess of the new millennium.

      You can do the whole thing in software for quite some time now.. but cables and old gear are about "cool factor". But It's cool for Ciani to do it because she's from that time, as you imply. The only contradiction is innovators at that time (or any time) wouldn't be caught dead doing "old crap" from 40 to 50 years before....

    • @__-cd9ug
      @__-cd9ug 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's an interesting discussion and all your arguments are valid
      Maybe it goes beyond the idea of innovation/old school stuff though? Because aside from looking cool, the device she uses provides a physical dimension to the music which is harder to create with recent digital tech. That's just my opinion though, but unplugging a cable and having the corresponding effect stop as a result probably feels more interactive than pressing a button on a touchscreen.
      Although, I guess I'm part of the younger generations and I did grow up around tech that looks more like her iPad than it does the Buchla; and computers are really useful in all sorts of way, including artistic creation, but some things are just more prone to knobs, diodes and faders especially when you're creating in the moment (again, just my opinion)

      You can't replicate analog oscillators in the digital realm, regardless of the interface. It will never sound the same. The imperfection of being physical signal flow is the charm. Nothing stone age about modular synthesizers, that's where all the innovation is these days.
