  • Marpurg's prelude to "Jsu meine Freude" is one of the most beautiful pieces of music Marpurg wrote. Perhaps it is even the most beautiful one.
The introduction of this prelude is full of longing and tender singing phrases. It is almost a pity when the introduction comes to an end and the choral melody starts. Luckily, this particular choral melody is a beautiful one as well and the music continues with the same emotional intensity.
The only thing I regret is that Marpurg did not write a coda in which he retakes the material of the introduction. That would had made it a really great piece. Though, as it is now, there is more then enough to enjoy.
The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Schnittger organ in the St. Martini-kerk, Groningen (www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organ....

An amazing composition, so pure and simple and yet so differentiated and sensitive. Thank you for this recording. I think you can take the liberty of playing the introduction again at the end.

Yes, I actually thought qbout doing just that. But than I would have to make something up to finish the piece of properly, so I decided to keep it putely Marpurg's music.

@@PartituraOrganum I see. My own experience is that the more I play the piece, the better I find it is not to repeat the introduction. However, at the same time I have more and more the feeling that the introduction could have been another piece that Marpurg subsequently linked to the chorale prelude.

It's an intruiging thought. Though I guess we'll never kow for sure...

Beautiful composition! Thank you for sharing! I have just explored some combinations in Walterhausen's Trost sampleset, whose possible and subtle flute nuances blend so much with the delicacy of the piece.

I don't have that sample set myself, so I can't try it for this piece. If you publish a recording of it let me know. I'd love to hear it.

Such a calming piece considering what’s happening in the east

Yes, it's terrible what's happening there. And then music is really no comofrt at all.
