As someone who is recovering from a fentanyl addiction, with 227 days clean today, I can say this moved me to tears.

My dad passed from fentanyl on March 18th, 2020. I was 19, for 17 and a half years of my life he was not a drug addict and he was the best dad i could ever ask for. He was my best friend and now he’s gone because of fentanyl and shitty people.

Brother, My dad passed away from Fentanyl as well Oct 23rd 2018 I was 19 to…its the most fucked up thing in the world he was clean for 40 years and when he was at his lowest hes demons came back to hunt him. Its fucked up because i would see him do it but he never wanted me to know so I acted like I didnt. biggest regret Wish I couldv’e been honest with him in those moments. This testimony was amazing to me Its an extreme problem in almost every house hold in America and people are starting to get addicted younger and younger, JellyRoll is speaking for niggas like me who couldnt make an impact and I love and respect him more than anything for it

I really am glad to see someone is truly taking the fight to drugs and with such a powerful message! Jelly Roll you said something that really hit home for me when you said "sometimes it starts from an accident and having to use prescribed narcotics and then one thing leads to another" my uncle underwent double hip surgery because he drank a lot when I was growing up, and he ended up having to take prescription narcotic pills to help ease his pain and ultimately became dependent on them, and when that didn't satisfy him he decided to look for the hard drugs... he went from being a man I knew and loved to being a complete stranger, the last thing I heard about him was he got him and my other uncle hooked onto meth, and God only knows if he made his way to fentanyl, I don't know how his well-being is anymore, and I pray that he is still alive and I hope that he finds a way to kick these drugs. You have a very strong and incredible message, you are one of my favorite artists that I listen to on the daily, and I also want to say you are my personal hero! I believe in your message, and I stand behind you every step of the way on taking to taking the fight not only to fentanyl, but to every drug out there that is robbing us of our loved ones!

People take different walks of life, and end up with their own experiences. Sometimes those that we judge, have experienced more, and learned more from it.
Fentanyl is coming through the open border people. We had a president that wanted a secure border. For some reason you guys voted him out. If you agree with Jelly Rolls testimony there should be no reason why you should vote blue. We need to start putting Americans first.

Well articulated? Definitely. Meaningful? Definitely not. Jelly rolls collective content is literally pro addiction. Talking about how sad it is for his ex yet he makes music that glorifies and exploits addiction on a national level…? Yeah he seems so sad about it. I’ve lost family and friends to addiction as well, and there’s no amount of money that I would accept to make album’s glorifying the same addictions…it’s called selling your soul and causing gods children to stumble and if he’s so smart then he’s knowingly come to that crossroad and decided which path to take.

If you think that talking about addiction is the same as glorifying it or exploiting it, you are part of the overall problem because sweeping it under the rug and forgetting about it is not going to get us out of this mess that we are in. That’s not how it works and that’s certainly not how “God’s children” are going to make it out of all this alive. So sorry for your loss, I know how it feels. I actually lost my sister in 2021 as well, she was 30 years old. My father found her and then he started pain pills to cope with the PTSD... he's doing better now, but what a vicious cycle. So glad Jelly Roll could bring a voice to those who cannot speak now. Beautiful.
My sister did opiates seldomly after she got better, but thought she was taking and oxy... it was 03/20/21. She hadn't made it to 30. She left a baby boy alone, bc she had lost the husband/father to baby a year prior

Amen. Thank you jelly roll for speaking the truth about this epidemic in our country. I have been in recovery for almost 8 years clean from all alcohol and drugs and I buried my best friend nearly three years ago from a Fentanyl overdose. She was home from prison for 48 hours and she passed away. The worst part about it was she was on drugs her entire incarnation and they still released her back onto the streets let her parole back to the same place she was arrested from in the first place. The system failed her and are failing every single addict struggling with addiction in our world today. We need to make a difference! And that is why I am so glad you shared your testimony because people need to know the truth!

“Because it’s 190 drug addicts, we don’t feel that way.” Got me right in the gut. I used to work with people with SUD, and it’s truly heartbreaking to hear their stories and backgrounds, mostly related to abusive backgrounds. Addiction is a disease, it’s not because people are “weak.”
Edit:// Yall, addiction of all kinda runs in my family, as well as having personal experience. My father is a crippling alcoholic and I’ve been through the wringer. Every expert tells me that these afflictions are a disease. You are not weak if you are an addict.
i am a former addict and that line really got me. it couldn't be described any better and really makes people confront their lack of empathy for addicts. we are human beings.
Formerly addicted to /smoking/ percs. Quit cold turkey then got on methadone, then dropped by 10mg a week. (Average is only 2.) therapist was called to ask me if I’m self sabotaging or suicidal; I let it be known I feel the withdrawals. I wake up suffering. Screaming in pain. Then I get my medicine and it does enough to barely take the pain away. But I’m going to continue doing it because I refuse to be an addict. I was addicted for 4 months. Smoking $80 worth of pills a day (which actually isn’t that much) I was on methadone for 3 months; before becoming addiction free.
My point? It is 100% because you’re weak. I’m not saying you’re not CAPABLE. I am saying you’re giving yourself EXCUSES. I would wake up throwing my guts up, sweating and sh**ting myself without having a fix. I wouldn’t be able to move or function. I would cry actual tears from the pain. And I still prevailed. Addiction is a mindset. It’s a mentality. And you giving yourself a reason to slack makes you weak. Because I dealt with ALL of this; while being HOMELESS. Sleeping on concrete. In bushes. No friends. No family. No support. Other than my own WILL to overcome. So I’m living proof that addiction isn’t impossible to overcome; despite ANY reason you give yourself. And that you not being able to overcome is because you’re not strong. Not saying you can’t BECOME strong; but as of this moment you are NOT. You are weak. And you allow yourself to continue being weak by telling yourself “it’s a sickness” rather than admitting you’re unable to handle what’s required for you to become better.
Some people are weak addicts, some people actually have trauma, you need to determine who is who and who really wants help.
I'm a former addict, and addiction is not a disease. It's difficult to contend with, sure. It's less easily reversed than some actual diseases, but it is not a disease. Calling it a disease so adamantly only serves to remove a nebulous amount of personal responsibility from the person it controls; and, as a psychologist, I can tell you that no progress is made without personal accountability. Blaming everything on exterior factors or scapegoating a pretend disease will not allow the patient to grow and form good habits and become well adjusted. Scapegoating will only serve to enable them to varying degrees. Sure, some people recover even with the mentality that addiction is a disease, but only in spite of such an attitude: not because of it.

I am witnessing for you my sister struggled with her addiction. Her favorite song is She. I have never been more proud of her when she did the same thing that the girl at the end of the video did she picked up the phone before she picked up the needle. Jelly Roll is a truly amazing person and he has blessed so many people and God has definitely blessed him. Our politicians need to listen to what he was saying, and be proactive like he asked if it was their children, their wives, their mothers, their fathers, their cousins, their friends, I bet they would pay more attention.
As a recovering addict, who has lost so many friends this really hit me hard!! 7 years clean now, 18 years in active addiction.

@realhebplus1871 yes there are a few ways to get an OD victim breathing again. Narcan, which reverses the effects of opioids, is the most common. I have OD on fentanyl 7 times and am only here because of narcan.

There are also those with genetic predisposition to addiction. One accident, need for pain meds, and suddenly the drugs hook has been set.

We spend way to much time not understanding and putting others down for their issues. I see it everywhere.
I recently made a friend with Schizophrenia. I find people like this very unique and special with hearts that need care.
Anyway Their family treats them bad. This person has nobody.
I really do not believe their family understands their condition or they are either very stressed.
I won't give up on them because I see their potential. We need to support one another and be positive.
I can not stand when people put others down for issues they have no idea about.

As someone who has suffered with addiction and now has 12 years clean (& who comes from a family in WV riddled with drug abuse) this moved me to tears. The amount of friends and family I have lost breaks me everyday. The survivor guilt is real! This man is a gem, from music to his heart.

As a recovering alcoholic (4 years), this speech made me cry. Addiction is nearly impossible to overcome. Recovery is a life-long battle and I weep for those stuck in the vicious cycle of addiction.

In 2020 I lost my 33 yr.old daughter to fentnal, she was hurt in a domestic relationship and was addicted to pain meds. In texas she went to a pain management place and recieved fentanyl patches. I am now raising 3 of my granddaughters, in 2020 my 4yr old was born addicted. The loss is unbearable sometimes but we do the best we can. Thank you Mr. Jelly roll for speaking on behalf of our daughters, sons, aunts, uncles ,friends and all those who are fighting for this addiction to be eradicated. I refuse to take a moralistic message from someone that took advantage of people to financially make gains off the people he now tries to protect. Addiction can be stopped by educating people to say no in the first place. It needs to end before it begins, not after. We as society need to stop glorifying drugs and crime. Its pretty simple. While big corporations have taken advantage of people, the military has taken advantage of people, we can end the cycle here and now. There are better laws and understanding of drug use. There is no excuse for recreational drug use - it has consequences and people today who willingly and knowing decide to roll the dice on street drugs need to be held accountable for their own actions. If you take illicit drugs, you are choosing to roll the dice on addiction.

This was the first time I ever heard/saw Jelly Roll on CBS's Sunday morning. The first couple of seconds I was going to fast forward but the 2 seconds was enough to make me realize what an incredible presence he has and have been a huge fan ever since. I dont know how many times I've now seen this video and each time I can't help but wonder what the look on the faces of the politicians on the panel. Is it amazement, disbelief or was it sinking in. Were Jelly Roll's words not getting through? Or, were they so gobsmacked by what he was saying that they just had those expressions because it sunk in? God, I'm surprised they didn't stand up clapping and/or crying!
Most of the panel are soulless boomers who could care less. They want to(and will) hold power until they die in office. Whatever tho.

For those that are in recovery, I have much respect for you all. I was on Vicodin for years and years and though I never abused the medication, I did form an addiction to it. I quit "cold turkey" from it and never looked back. Whatever the "drug" may be that you find yourself addicted to, you can break the cycle if you want to. I know it's tough, but it can be done.

Jelly is wrong... We need our border closed and secure and illegal drug flow will stop DRAMATICALLY. Making "safe spaces" for junkies to get high and opening Suboxone/methadone clinics is NOT the answer. I'll tell you that from experience so listen to me dammit.
