I trained with this Sifu for 2 years (10 years ago). I am by no means an accomplished martial artist, I'm not even a Martial artist. I just wanted to add that Sifu Yan Lei learned what he knows from the Shaolin Temple in China, he is as real as it gets. He has a brother Sifu Yanzi who set up the Shaolin Temple UK. (an official branch of the Shaolin Temple China) Yanzi was the Abbot of Shaolins student. Each master can only have two students at Shaolin, Yanzi was one of the Abbots 2 students. This lineage is as authentic Shaolin as it possibly could be. Both brothers chose Steel Jacket as their specialty as this was the most useful in a fight, neither can do flips or any kind of Wushu. They are fighters, pure and simple. There are many styles at the Shaolin Temple, Sanshou is a discipline practiced there also. This is what these two Shaolin Brothers did. All the traditional movements are also practiced as they have their own value, but for these two, it's what can be implemented in a fight that interests them. As they are fighters. When I joined the UK temple, I thought I would be learning how to fight like a character from Tekken, how wrong I was. I still think about some of the talks they would give at the end of the class, about life and how to be a better person (especially Yanzi). I don't practice any more, (I'm 45) but I still keep fit with all of the basic exercises they taught me. Their knowledge is so deep, not to mention the Qigong and Zen Buddhist aspect of their practice. I am only posting this as I read so many comments where people sum up this mans Shaolin credentials based on a TH-cam instruction Video. One can only know what he knows, if one does what he did. But he can't put that across in a video clip. Thank You Sifu, you changed my life. X
That was an amazing explanation behind it! I think a lot of people don't give credit where it's due especially when they just watch a video on youtube & immediately make an assumption without even knowing the truth behind it. As well with the fact that shifu's focus was on real fighting application not just for the performance side of Shaolin. Peace & health brother🙏🏻
What I can't stand about people who say that a style like this would never work is that, you never go and find out for yourself wether or not it works. Here's an example, when I trained in a traditional kung fu style (fiveancestors fist) or known as Ngo Cho kun my teacher would encourage us to go to different martial arts schools and see how we got on, now we didn't go to these classes looking for fights but joined in the classes, especially those that incorporated sparring, we held our own and were able to use our style effectively against who we were up against, now I'm not saying this because I'm trying to put other styles down, I'm saying it because we actually tested what we knew to come up with a conclusion that what we do, does actually work. Now how many of you that are slating traditional kung fu have ever gone to another class of a different style to actually give a valid opinion of whether another style will work in real life situation or not. Why don't you contact this sifu and say you would like to test his skill or even another martial arts class near where you live and do the same, un till you do something like that your opinion is actually invalid. The main thing about martial arts is not the style you practice but how hard you as the practitioner trains. That is the essence of any discipline and always has been.
Obviously Mr. Shifu Yan Lei has put in the time and done the work,,,Ive seen a lot of kung fu and in my opinion ,this guy is the real deal,,I believe he is sincere, and his material and infomation is valid,,,but be ready to do the work,,,he can't work for you,,,
Shifu, thank you for the vid. For me it is better the traditional way to throw them down to the ground and strike in one move, rather then use a right hook to punch them in the side of the face. Also, one is in a better position sunken in next to the opponent rooted in stance. The punch kick combo is very common in use while the other is not.
I don’t really see anybody saying bad about this; but the idea of this is to learn the basic, create the structure and apply it. No you’re not going to do this the same every time, you need to apply what you’ve learned to each appropriate situation and mix it up. What wins in a fight equally to strength, agility, etc is the mind/intelligence and using it.
Reminds me of the kempo punch techniques I learned at Villari's. It maybe where beginners need to start. He may be breaking it down so people can learn it.
this guys seems pretty hardcore. Would love to train with someone like him . Would be ideal if the communication could be better as people could learn so much .
the guy will recover from the kick that is when sifu hit back he has to defense. Si fu would also push him off balance as well which will force the guy to slow down before he make another attack, if it was a feint (fake kick) to set up for opening, which isnt even a good way of doing it, then Sifu would counter whatever the guy is doing with a low kick to make him lose balance, because one of his leg is already off the ground atm and sifu after the block was already low kicking him, one more thing fake high kicks arent good choices for opening follow up attacks, should be a low kick or punches to open an combination, other wise would be 1 strike. then back off. But still some fighter can get things done in many ways so it just the basic.
I train here. We get shown techniques, then we try them out in the ring. The techniques are easy enough to learn, but any one of them could take many years to master. We are encouraged to find things that work for us and then to continually sharpen those weapons to develop our own style.
The guy in the red trunks wants to be an mma fighter so bad....lmfao. shifu is a monastary monk, not an mma fighter. He should train just kung fu and tai chi with shifu instead. The shaolin style is the grandfather for all martial arts
The Shifu has fought Sanda in China. When he came to the West, he trained in boxing and muay thai as well. Most Shaolin monks won't have this background.
This is exaclty what i think modern kung fu practioners should do. They do not learn sparring in shaoling but they have extremely good condition, and agility for fighting. So they should go to other sports to learn how to put all they skills in practise.
So.. What about these movements are unique to Shaolin Kung-fu? They're all in Kick boxing and MMA. Also, the opponent is pretty unskilled if he's just kicking at your guards as the student is. As well, you're not really accomplishing anything if the movement is merely back and forth without trapping and immobilizing the opponent.
Shaolin were what MMA is now. They went around China and learned new Martial Arts and techniques and passed down the most effective stuff after optimising what they currently had with the new info. Shaolin Kung fu is a mix of many houses. And since globalisation they also started to include techniques from other countries. This man and his brother do that as well. And he is showing a situational based response here. This is not a real fight, but IF the situation is like this, you CAN respond like this. Listen to him, he said “ I am giving you ideas”. Really if you are so curious go and train with them. Speaking without actual understanding just makes you look petty.
All of these. That cover 5:43 right there is taken DIRECTLY from the most FUNDAMENTAL Northern Shaolin form. All true Shaolin students know that. In fact, differences would suggest that NONE of these are uniquely MT.
This emanates Muay Thai strick give credits to Chinese traditional material Art Kung fu or call it Sanda. You should give credit to where belong. You do not see Muay Thai emanates any Kung Fu moves. Years old lies and copy continue. World of Muay Thais fighters should speak out.
So you are saying you know all the kingfu moves have ever existed, if there is anything resemblances Muay Thai, it must be Kungfu copies from Muay Thai not the other way round, or it is complety impossible for both styles happen to have the same techniques? I am actually asking a sincere question. Unless you can absolutely trace the origin of both styles otherwise you can’t claim who copied who. It’s like saying Ramen is Japanese food, Chinese Ramen is a copy of Japanese Ramen.
Most are not pure. This thing in saying that kung fu is a movie thing, it is immaturity and/or total ignorance. first, that Muay Thai is not pure, it had Indian roots, it was invaded by the Burmese Empire (Lethwei) and several peoples near the place (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, CHINA) immigrated to it, besides the fact that it is not ancient, nor centenary she is, had boxing influences to get rules in the Ring. Some styles of Japanese martial arts had Chinese roots such as Karate Shorin (Shaolin in Chinese) Ryu Shorinji KENPÔ, Nahara Te and/or ToDe (Chinese hands). With Tae Kwon do, it wasn't different, he wasn't all that beautiful as he is today, it's a mixture of a folk fight known as Taekyonn with Karate, that is, who's imitating who? for those and others, which do have very efficient kung fu styles or efficient Wushu styles such as Wushu Sanda, Choy Layfut and Shaolin Lohan.
i know that, it's from xiao hong quan it can be used to defend any kick and punch but guy named "The kung fu channel" is talking about some nonsense ...
No it is not the movement of the form what is nonsense. It is the kind of video what is nonsense. That is never a kick defence! So many interpretations are wrong... at 2.10 there is not a block that is a pull of the inside the oponents right ellbow, and the front leg of the opponent is pulled away with the tiger stance... There are so many things I cannot write it all... The kick defence is unbelievable unpractical....
The Kung Fu Channel sorry but the statment that it's not a kick defence is BULLSHIT, it can be used the way you wrote but it is only one of MANY possible ways to use this movement. What is exactly unpractical in using this movment against kick? It worked for me many times :-)
And here's why in general you don't see any Shaolin movements in MMA or street combat. It's all just too flowery, too much excessive movement. Looks great in movies but not practical at all. Needs to have a conservation of movement as in Japanese TMA to be effective.
+Zapata1307 I bet whether the title of the video was something like, muay thai , or kickboxing your opnion would be different. Your opnion here just show how you don't understand anything about martial arts.
+fiendin281 i just think that at this point competition wushu has watered down shaolin to the point where no one takes it serious enough to invest time in it. I'd say somewhere around 75% of shaolin / longfist practitioners don't even know what or how their movements are applied to combat. This shifu is in great shape but a lot of what I see him doing is just kickboxing, and his traditional movements go against what I've been taught. who knows, maybe my kung fu is bad...
Yeah I don't know about that. The thing that makes boxers good fighters is how they train, not necessarily the technique. The reason Kung Fu guys get their asses kicked is because a lot of us don't train timing, getting hit, combinations, bag and dummy work, partner drills, free sparring etc.. The technical aspect of longfist is not short of practical applications. People just get caught up in only training forms.

What does he think of the Master Wong guy who is also in the UK?

RESPECT THIS MAN
I train in a Thaiboxing dojo, they exactly treach the same moves over here! (Netherlands, land of Kickboxing) Peace
Shifu, thank you for the vid.

Great ideas and video , thank you !
Is that Qi xing chuan at 6:01
aprendi só de olhar tiu isso parece ser eficiente em UFC.
Where are you located exactly, and what does it take to become a student?
Reminds me of the kempo punch techniques I learned at Villari's. It maybe where beginners need to start. He may be breaking it down so people can learn it.
This style is not different from kick boxing
this guys seems pretty hardcore. Would love to train with someone like him . Would be ideal if the communication could be better as people could learn so much .
Shaolin the best fighter !
Really god master, its horrible watch negative comments from mma fans
I keep loving you but I've not seen (yet) ANY single sparring from you Sifu
Thankyou sir
sir what to do when two people grab you and third one tries to attack you with knife
Run before they grab you
what happens if the attacker follows his kick with a flurry of punches?no one takes a kick and backs off,
He's forcing his opponent to back off.
the guy will recover from the kick that is when sifu hit back he has to defense. this specific technique isn't for a flurry of kicks combination, its a dominate position where you take the person off balance and create an opening.
it will make u off balance
u cant follow
Thank you idol
Thanks master
From my understanding is not a style that is dangerous it depends on the person
I would love to train under him i'm in tampa though.
Ronda Rousey could have greatly benefited from your instruction a few years ago :)
LMAO🤣
Very good, but in UFC it could not be used because rules do not allow
there are very similar to muay thai moves
kickboxing form with kungfu as the sprit
FightSmartTrav How is your arm bridge parry game? :p

The best way to show how apply a martial path is by applying it in a real sparring.... Not showing it with a "passive" partner
Lol, no. Boxers should stop using punching bags...

Of course it works because it's not "choreographing old martial arts". This is mma striking.
LMAO! This IS choreographed drilling. Old martial arts are the REAL working stuff .

copy muaythai
muay thai is for pussies
Learn and look for information. Sanda or Sanshou is not a copy of Muay Thai. However, Kick Boxing is a light version copy of Muay Thai.
sanda is a mixed martial art of traditional kung fu styles, especially with moves from northern shaolind and chinese wrestling.
Supermomo2007 Exactly, It is. It is a compilation of many chinese styles. Takedowns are from Shuai Chiao.
go study the history 1st
