      Of course the more likely reason she manages to get away with it is probably she looks like a sweet little old grandmother. Does anybody really suspect Miss Daisy of being a serial stowaway? If I'm an airport agent I probably would fall for some excuse she'd give about picking up her grandson, or something of the sort.

    My favorite part is that she got arrested even when she had a valid ticket. It's almost like she was thinking: "There's something missing from this experience. What is it? Ah yes! I need to get arrested." 😂

      An old school across the street from my grandmother was truned into a county jail. Honestly, I suspect a lot of it is because she looks like a stereotypical, sweet looking old grandmother. While profiling isn't supposed to be a thing by security, she almost certainly gets the benefit of the doubt a lot because nobody suspects your ordinary looking grandmother is a serial stowaway.

    Anybody here old enough to remember the movie "Airport" from 1970? One of the main actors was Helen Hayes, playing an old lady who was also a chronic stowaway, just for the fun of it. The similarities are remarkable. Her character also waited for airport personnel to be distracted, and used her "sweet little old lady" persona to disarm people. Wonder if Marylin got the idea from the movie.

      Just 1? Given the amount of time I used to be travelling on busses while at work while working for a health care funded home care agency going from house to house I saw way more than only 1 bus hijacker around town. Like that one here in this city too who broke the bus doors at the front to the right of the bus driver maybe after the bus driver refused to let him board again without a bus ticket or bus pass. In my opinion bus drivers don't get paid enough. Or that other one long before who mooned my mom in the back of his daddy's truck only a few days after she required him to leave the school bus for driving him to his high school after getting onto her bus through the back door.

      @francesbernard2445 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leaves me wondering why that kind of stowaway on planes, busses, trains and cars etc. fad has been going on for so long. In my mom's case that bus stowaway incident and then later her being mooned from the back of a truck while driving her school bus happened late in the year 1973 when most school bus drivers too were men. One of the same kids after his dad bought a bus pass warned her that his daddy was a lawyer and so SHE better watch out not him. Did a dusty old now Hollywood movie by chance inspire that sort of thing or what?

Who could be better equipped to identify security risks than someone who has spent years studying the system and locating even the most subtle procedural gaps? Set her up with an on-site apartment, regular meals, healthcare, random air flights and an occasional local news interview. This could perhaps fulfill her all her needs, reduce the burden on the courts and resolve many future TSA migraines.

    Hi Dr G, have I got a flight story for you! Wish you could have analysed this lady. I caught a connecting flight from Seoul, South Korea to New York in 2003, just two years after 9/11. There was a woman acting erratically in the transit lounge. I couldn’t believe she was allowed to board the plane. She was acting even more bizarrely on the flight, and flight attendants started to follow her around. 2 hours into the flight she came up to me and my husband and two friends we were travelling with and started yelling at us that we had stolen her seat. The flight attendants continued to follow her and try and calm her down. Then she started to go for the plane door. I am an RN, I have limited psych experience as it is not an area I have worked in, but I could see that these flight attendants didn’t grasp the gravity of how potentially dangerous she was, and with each passing minute she appeared more and more psychotic. I got them to see if the was a doctor on board, there was, she was travelling with her husband who was an RN too, but this doctor was an infection control specialist, possibly the furthest specialty from psych. She refused to allow this person to be cuffed despite this woman’s repeated attempts launching herself at the plane door, screaming that she was on the 27th floor of a hotel in Las Vegas, and despite her escalating erratic behaviour. We managed to isolate her from the rest of the passengers. The plane had two emergency bags with some drugs, but the the only drug to try and calm her was the antianxiolytic diazepam, 2 preloaded syringes. We gave them both to her, 2 hours apart but of course they had absolutely no effect at all, if anything she was even more upset that she had been held down. She was kicking, biting, screaming, crying, hallucinating, she was massively deluded - she didn’t understand she was on a plane going to New York, very suspicious of everyone and everything. She kept saying she wanted to kill herself and jump out of the window of the hotel, that we were lying to her she was on a plane - she was adamant she was in a hotel and of course, she kept going for the plane door. This poor lady was most certainly was not harmless in the mental state she was in. We managed to find out where she had come from, get some details and placed a call to a relative and she was on her way to the US for an arranged marriage. Our landing at JFK was hideous, I had to sit on her to strap her in to her seat as she was biting me and screaming and the plane almost landed not being belted in myself. I was 6 weeks pregnant at the time and very ill with nausea. All hell broke loose the moment the plane landed, she got out of her belt despite being held there by two flight attendants (this woman would not have weighed more than 45 kgs, she was a very small Asian lady), the only saving grace was that it got me and my husband and friend through customs in 5 minutes flat as I was the only person she responded to. It was absolutely terrifying and exhausting, The flight was a 12 hour stretch. The doctor refused to allow her to be cuffed or restrained as I mentioned but she really was dangerous in her state so I was pretty angry at this doctor - so was her husband who as I said was also an RN. Whew, I am exhausted just recounting it! Apologies for the mini novella....

    An excellent case to analyze. 1. I did not like the justice saying he was tired of seeing her. All judges need vigorous mental health training. 2. As I get older, It's absolutely true that one is more invisible, and I am already experiencing that even though I do not look "old" yet. Store security never question me and younger people always are. That should not be the case.

    I've worked in retail for 10 years and I can tell you for a fact that the most effective shoplifters are actually the elderly ladies. I'm not talking about poor ragged old women that steal cheese from a grocery shelf because they can't afford to pay their rent, medicines and still buy food (although they are good too in the sense they do this kind of thing on a daily basis for years before sb notices anything). I'm talking about elegant, amiable grannies that turn out to nick expencive electronics and suchlike and carry them off hidden under their chinchilla coat. Exactly because they are one of the last people sb would suspect of bad intentions, and are generally perceived as sweet, harmless old fashion kind of well-groomed and vulnerable.
    Also, please don't give terrorist organizations ideas, Dr. Grande. If they started hiring elderly ladies for the attacks, they would cause the biggest damage and casualty numbers.
