    My roommate doesn't wash her hands, I know this because I never hear the water turn on. I don't think I've ever heard her wash her hands after using the restroom. It grosses me out. So I open the door then wash my hands since the door knob is probably pretty dirty.

    2 minutes, according to our local Hospital - when I was in there during my daughter's birth I read the card provided for nurses: wash backs of hands, palms, backs of interlocked fingers, fronts of interlocked fingers, cup fingers in an rj shape and scrub, hold one thumb with the other hand and scrub, reverse, scrape fingers against opposite palm and reverse (this last one is really great at getting under the nails.) And according to a Research Doctor I read once, 5 times a day means your hands are so sanitary it is hard for bacteria to get a grip.

    Question: Are we supposed to put soap on our hands before water? I see most people put soap before turning the tap on, but personally i think washing our hands that way isnt bubbly enough so i prefer putting soap in the middle of washing my hands.

  • @Haikuhiaku
    @Haikuhiaku 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hand washing is something I am passionate about. I make all of the soap for my family and make sure that my kids wash their hands properly, creating suds, rinsing the suds from their finger tips, making more, rinsing from fingertips, etc. I believe that soap and water is not a privilege, but a right for every human being, for their health and for their community's well being. Everyone deserves to have soap and water.

    • @Haikuhiaku
      @Haikuhiaku 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chuckie Waitt that's a bet you would lose. On the contrary, we get sick less often because why? Oh yeah, we wash our hands. You don't need to build immunity to microbes if you don't let them inside in the first place.

    • @ck88777
      @ck88777 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not exactly how it works, if you spend any time in a public place you are exposed to a plethora of nasty bacteria and viruses

    • @Haikuhiaku
      @Haikuhiaku 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exposed yes, but susceptible, not necessarily. Just because you are exposed does not mean that you are automatically going to get sick. Having healthy flora is as important, if not more than washing the germs off of your hands before touching your face. Just gargling water reduces your chances of getting sick. Swabbing your nose with salt water reduces your chances. I have kids in school and my kids get sick less than their classmates. They still do get sick once or twice a year, but less than their classmates. The proof is in the pudding.

  • @jasonlisonbee
    @jasonlisonbee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is commonly expressed to turn off the tap (presumably to preserve water) during this period and back on again for a final rinse. Does that not cross contaminate which is nearly as gross as washing wrong? Nearly all faucets force cross contamination unless you leave it on and come back with a clean towel to turn it off. It's especially gross in a public restroom. Don't cite antimicrobial surfaces, they don't kill microbes immediately.

    What is more liquid soap gives an oportunity to avoid more bacteria than solid soap. When you keep your solid soap on your soap dish and it remains in water wich run down from soap bar it contains more bacteria and your hand wash may be pointless. That`s why in hospitals surgeons don`t use solid soap for many many years. What is more in our houses there are two main bacteria incubators, one is solid soap kept in (so called by scientist in my country) "soap juice" and second one is a sponge used to wash dishes which was left wet. Use dishwashers and liquid soap with automatic feeder.

    • @AngelaGulbranson
      @AngelaGulbranson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Angela Gulbranson (Angie) To clarify this, the host says wash your hands and kill the bacteria, killing bacteria is bad because it causes antibiotic resistance. So which is it? Washing your hands with regular soap and water does not kill the bacteria. The soap grabs onto the dirt and bacteria with one end and grabs the water with the other end and the bacteria is pulled off your hand and into the water and down the drain. The bacteria is not killed it just goes somewhere else so its not on your hand anymore.

    The study is malarkey. I've been in the resto biz a long time and I can tell you that we hardly ever have to replace the soap in the public restrooms - because hardly anyone uses it - same goes for the paper towel. The numbers are dismal if the restrooms are 'single private' - meaning there won't be anyone there to see if you wash your hands. In my own restaurant (single, private restrooms), I would sometimes check the sinks after a big lunch rush and find them perfectly dry. Out of curiosity I took to marking the paper about 6 or seven sheets in and found that the mark remained on the roll most days (with dozens of people passing through the restrooms). Toilet paper, on the other hand, can disappear like magic if it's not in a locked dispenser (and sometimes even if it's in a locked dispenser). Try putting a water meter on the supply to the sinks, weighing paper and soap after busy meal rushes, and just counting the number of people to go through and you'll find that people almost never wash their damn hands if they are alone in there. Gah!

    I think that just people being in the washroom affect whether or not you wash your hands, and how you wash your hands. I feel as if the researchers weren't in the room, less people would have washed their hands. Just a thought.

    Since EVERYTHING is filled with bacteria (like the door knob we're gonna touch after washing our hands), wouldn't it be better to wash hands BEFORE going to the bathroom, in order to be clean during the business ?
    I guess befor and after is better, but if we wanna wash only once, isn't before better ?

    • @OmegaMegalodon
      @OmegaMegalodon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Piffrock try leaving the door open or wait for someone to open for you. Or better still, use your leg to kick it open if the door is the swing out types.

    • @Piffsnow
      @Piffsnow 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That wasn't the point of my question : the door was just an example.
      The question was : What's the point of washing our hands after pee/poop ?
      Hands washed or not, they're gonna get dirty pretty quickly since bateria is everywhere.
      Don't get my wrong, I get the point and it's obvious. HOWEVER, nobody talks about washing their hand before pee/poop, and this seems more logical to me, to touch your parts with clean hands.
      I'm not sure I make myself clear here...
      To summarize : washing hand before and after would be the best option, but if you wanna wash them only once, it seems more logical to me to wash them before.

    • @OmegaMegalodon
      @OmegaMegalodon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Piffrock oh, I don't wash hands unless I bath or shower. You see, I can even eat dirty food without getting diarrhea.
      I mean if your hands are dirty and you are used to getting dirty without diarrhea, then by all means just be yourself. That's means you are tough, you are special from normal people who easily get sick.
      I don't wash hands too...you see I am quite tough ;)
