1) If I understand the system correctly, you try to get a goblet (center opening) of about thirty strong almost vertical branches and then you cut off all their side branches leaving only a small piece of a few centimeters which will produce fruiting bodies at their basis. 2) Is it possible to transform under this KGB system a 5-year-old cherry tree initially pruned into a simple goblet?
When cutting look at the direction of the buds. The last bud will make a new leading branch in the direction of the bud. That way you can control the way the tree grows. Look for buds in all directions for a balanced tree and away from the center of the tree for better airflow

First off, this is such a great video showing the progression and pruning over 5 years. I have a question, why do you do a flat cut? In all other pruning I've learned to cut at 45 degree angle to shed water and prevent rot. Are you in a low-rainfall climate? Thank you!
Excellent presentation! Lot of ideas learned. I haven’t pruned my cherry tree since I planted it 5 years ago. It’s flowering,no fruit. I would like to prune this summer. It’s around 15’ tall. Is it still manageable?😂
If you have flowers but no fruit, it is possible that the problem is low temperatures or you don't have pollinators. As far as pruning is concerned, everything is possible, although it will take years to correct it to the desired shape.
Hello there! Love this video and have been cheerfully pruning my youthful cherry for 2 years to get this going. However, I have observed a problem. The cherry is putting out a lot of burr knots, which I gather are small roots, on the trunk and particularly where I've pruned the stems in a previous year. I think the reason is that the tree is planted too close to a North Wall in the UK, and it's not getting enough light. Do you have any advice? I've read you can chisel off the burrs, but that feels like I'm inviting disease in. I could move the tree, obviously - but maybe I'd be better off starting from scratch? Or should I risk leaving it and seeing if it can survive in situ? I love its position and it's growing well. But every season brings a new cluster of burr knots which I gather will weaken the branches. Any advice appreciated. I love my tree!
Try to reduce pruning, and give the tree a chance, maybe it will be able to cope with more sun when it grows.The next time you plant a tree, make sure the place is well ventilated and sunny.
how will the tree react to the first cut without buds growing from the trunk/stem? will it just shoot up another leader and branch from there or will the old growth actually produce branches?

One tree had all the dormant buds rubbed off or dried off.....as it's been severally weeks now I see some buds finally pushing, but they are not in the position I will want for the tree. Should I just let it grow this first year and store all that energy and do a topping cut next year to start my branch scaffolding? Currently the lowest branch is about 30 inches above ground. Or should I simply top it now? I'd think that would be more risky. I want low scaffolded tree. I live in a residential neighborhood on a typical house lot, so I need to train and prune small. Thanks!
Try not to touch anything the first year, maybe by cutting a little bark at the height you want, it will encourage a bud to break out, but that is very difficult and unlikely.

Using mazzard root stock is it beneficial to have 5 leaders to start from for the first stage? I have a small tree going into it's 3rd year which i want to convert to kgb. It has a fifth branch which is weaker than the others at the very top. I'm not sure if I should keep it or trim down to the 4 equal leaders. Thank you for any advice and thank you for your channel

please help, i am looking for info everywhere! i planted a bare root sweet cherry last year, headed it and left 5 buds to start the first scaffold. The whip got beautiful healthy leaves on the trunk, but more what I would call "spurs" but not clearly branches? What did I do wrong? if she is still alive after our miserable quebec winter (she is well protected around her drip live with leaves and compost and wrapped in a 3 layer burlap teepee) what should I do to encourage her to make actual branches??

Hmmm she was a "whip" as in a tall branchless bare root stick when I got her (via post, perhaps that was very traumatic) but I will say her whip looked thicker then the peach and apple I also planted that day. I just hope all three made it through this crazy winter we are having this year... they are supposed to be on zone 3 rootstock, we will see.

it all depends on what kind of climate you have, if it's dry and the temperatures are above zero you can do it during the winter as well. It is ideal at the end of summer when the weather is warm and dry.
Is there a way to send you a picture of my black tartarian cherry tree? It's at the end of its 2nd season. The 3 main branches are a bit too high and vertical. I was thinking of pruning them off closer to the bottom and keep some of the narrower ones that move outward at a better angle....then prune them back to 5 to 10 inches to make them the same approximate height. What time of year do you prune? Should I leave any flowering buds on second or third year? Does cutting branches back to 15cm not let it produce fruit?
Late summer or winter. In third year maybe some fruit buds, but in forth year you will have a lot around 10kg of fruit. Yes, pruning to 15 cm takes yield, but such is the system so that the caliber of the fruit is larger and easier to pick.

You are getting right, you can always transform any tree into the KGB system. I have video where you can see on the 30 year old tree.

Remove that weakest branch so that the branches grow in a better balance.

It looks like your seedling was too old. Send a picture of your cherry so we can see it.

Hmmm she was a "whip" as in a tall branchless bare root stick when I got her (via post, perhaps that was very traumatic) but I will say her whip looked thicker then the peach and apple I also planted that day.
I just hope all three made it through this crazy winter we are having this year... they are supposed to be on zone 3 rootstock, we will see.

@@CherryFarmEurope да, выращиваю, сад пока 3й год, в 21м году урожай совсем мал был. Во время цветения было холодно и шли 2 месяца дожди.
У меня похожие проблемы, особенно с этими ранними сортами. В прошлом году во время цветения неделю шли дожди, поэтому мало кто рожал.

Mazzard is a very vigorous rootstock , but if it is pruned regularly, it can be very good for the back yard or garden because it is very long-lived.

It seems you are pruning in early spring, is that right. I was told pruning of cherry trees was done at the end of summer only. What do you reccomend?
it all depends on what kind of climate you have, if it's dry and the temperatures are above zero you can do it during the winter as well. It is ideal at the end of summer when the weather is warm and dry.
Is there a way to send you a picture of my black tartarian cherry tree? It's at the end of its 2nd season. The 3 main branches are a bit too high and vertical. I was thinking of pruning them off closer to the bottom and keep some of the narrower ones that move outward at a better angle....then prune them back to 5 to 10 inches to make them the same approximate height. Thank you for your help.

Late summer or winter. In third year maybe some fruit buds, but in forth year you will have a lot around 10kg of fruit. Yes, pruning to 15 cm takes yield, but such is the system so that the caliber of the fruit is larger and easier to pick.
