  • John Willams giving a flawless performance of his classic interpretation of Stanley Myer's Cavatina in 1979. Is it just me, or does JW look like the late great Peter Cook?

Anytime I feel any sort of pain I just listen to Cavatina with John Williams playing, and the pain magically goes away. This is true music therapy.

I'm compiling a list of all of the music which intimately affects me the most. This is one of those. I have listened to it for years. I'll go months without hearing it and then for no particular reason it will pop into my head, and won't go away until I have O D'd on it (or until I have drank my fill). Hard to explain the sense of beauty and pain. It does not depress me but makes me feel pain or loss mixed up with beauty and serenity.

So true. A classic.. The young actors and their outstanding performances. I still remember the scene when Fe Niro returns from Nam and the horror and he's alone in the hotel room.. He palms his eyes because he's crying and just sinks to the floor in helplessness. So many unforgettable moments in that movie. A real masterpiece. De Niro giving us flashes of his great acting ability and improvisation. Not to mention the young charming Christopher Walken..

I bought this album years ago just for John Williams' performance of Cavatina. After seeing the Deer Hunter, this piece stayed with me long after and I was so excited Williams arranged it as a solo piece. It took some time, but I eventually learned it myself and actually played it for the funeral mass of Grandmother back in '84. For me, Cavatina feels like a deep, heart felt love toward family, friends, and when I'm totally immersed into it, everyone else as well.

+Traumerei Yap So how are you getting along with this? Its actually easier than you think. It took me longer than any usual string picking tune or any guitar tune at all for that matter. But thats because this uses single to dual picking fingering and also fretting that I havent used before. Theres also some chords I have never came across which feel like he made them up just for this tune.
BUT Because its a masterpiece, it doesnt make it hard to learn. Im playing it on an old metal string semi acoustic and it sounds great. Its the pace that changes all the time. I love this and Moonlight Sonata.
BTW Cavatina is so much easier to play on Piano than Guitar, thats if theres any Pianists here.

Nice upload, I fell in love with this piece of music and this interpretation when I first saw the Deer Hunter as a 12 year old lad (1983). Brilliant film with a score worthy of such an epic film.

My god, you watched that movie when you were 12. I saw it the same year, when I was 19, and if fucked me up for a year and a half...in a good way. I couldn't get it out of my head.

Tim Basham I was actually 11 and saw it the theater with my father & grandfather. When it first came out on video on the 80's my cousin and I would watch it on friday nights in my basement for months. Cavatina was my wedding song.

salcavaliere In the theater!? My first roommate in college saw it when it first came out--I'm guessing he was 18/19--and he said he came out of the theater shaking. I always wanted to see it on the big screen.

Tim Basham I just turned 48 a few weeks again, seems like yesterday we saw it at the Marlboro theater in Brooklyn. I will never get the mount top scene when he let the buck go, my dad was a big hunter in those days.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! YET VERY BITTERSWEET. .. I ALWAYS LOVED THAT MOVIE, NO MATTER HOW MUCH MY MOTHER NAY-SAYED IT. YES, EXTREMELY SAD, & TRAGIC, ...BUT A BRUTALLY HONEST REALITY FOR SO MANY. I MISS MY BROTHER ANIMAL.

the deer hunter is the first fillm where i sat for the entire end credits, simply due to this song playing. when this song was played after all of the drama, the emotional turmoil from the film this song came out in such a haunting way

So my sister asked that I play some music for her wedding; in particular she asked that I play for her as she walks down the isle. I've been leaning on this piece or Barrios' Julia Florida. What do you folks on the internet listening to this think about that idea of mine?

IDK if you're paying any mind to months old comments, but I figured I'd follow up JIC. I went with Cavatina and I'm very glad I took your advice Filbert. It was an emotional, once in a lifetime, experience. I'm not a professional who regularly plays at venues; I just play because I love it. So being able to use it in this context was more of a gift to me than it was me giving to her and my now brother in law. It made them happy, which is ofc the point, but the reception from the 300 something guests was incredibly gratifying if I may be self-indulgent. There isn't anything better I could have given of myself. If this isn't a phrase already coined then let it be mine: there is no greater gift than giving. You can't put a price on the gratitude of a little sister.

I have always loved his sensibility with music. It's just always the right balance of intellect and emotion. Never too much of one or the other. Even his Aranjuez recordings are my favorite to listen to. He just plays the music and lets the composer speak. To me he is the greatest of all time for so many reasons.
