@ Laura Buckles A hard act to follow as Siegfried was my initial thought too, but when I saw they'd cast Samuel West in the part, perfect. He''ll do the character justice. So looking forward to this from the trailer. Haha ...Dianna Rigg as Mrs. Pumphrey.
The first Siegfried was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the movie version. At the time, I thought he was perfect, but he was surpassed by Robert Hardy when the series was done. Like you, I have it settled that Hardy IS the quintessential Siegfried Farnon.
@@bonsaipal All of the originals were tops: James, his wife (wives),Tristan & ofc Siegfried. They are engraved, like the books, on my emotional memory.
Simon West & Tristram fella do a great job in trying to live up to their preceders. No easy job. What they all did was to copy them bang on but yet let their own interpretation add to it. Somehow it works. Tristram no.2 (sorry name eludes) is actually even better, sorry Peter, as for James Herriot he is just the same, dull but as in the original he is the sounding board for all the characters to bounce off. One thing they don't do as the original is arms up cow poo tube. There is a stunt arm. Who knows it may belong to Christopher Timothy & Peter Davidson to supplement their meagre pensions. With Diana Rigg dying as Mrs Pumphrey & only series 1 they will have to recast. When they did recast for James Heriot's wife, I could never take to Lynda Bellingham somehow, not personally as a actor but they might have put in Jabba the Hut as she didn't reassemble Carol Drinkwater in any way. It was just lady in a terrible wig to me. Best they replace with a unknown actor rather than a 'name'. But they won't. Dawn French anyone?
@@seltaeb3302 All wonderful observations. I was wondering the same thing about casting another female actor for Mme Pumphrey. How about Frances de la Tour? Another fave for the role would be Annette Badland who was so deliriously absurd and overfed as Lady Alabaster in ANGELS & INSECTS (1995, starring Mark Rylance and Patsy Kensit).
@@rebeccatrussell1766 - Then you are in for a wonderful treat! I also enjoyed it, and I was overjoyed when the original series came out. But therre are many commenters who seem to think that enjoying the new version somehow violates the original.

In the 80's my parents and I watched (and re-watched many times) the original series with Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy, Peter Davison, and Carol Drinkwater. I hope that this new vision will also do justice to James Herriot and his country practice.
I have found the first two episodes to be very true to the original series, but expanded in wonderful ways that budget and newer technologies provide. The scenery is breathtaking, lush and green; practically a character on its own. The housekeeper's role is as much companion to Siegfried as cook and housekeeper. She has a sixth sense for predicting his moods, and it plays out with wonderful subtlety. She's expert at bending his opinions so he arrives at her desired position on his own. The animals are very well cast -- the cow in distress is marked in such a way that she's visible in a pasture with the herd. Herriot's interactions with Sigfried''s dog -- usually suspicious of men -- are what win his favor with the staid housekeeper. So much character development occurs without announcement, which beautifully fulfills the screenwriting axiom: "Show it, don't say it." The first episode reaches back a little further to Harriot's home with his parents on the docks. It's just a few minutes at the top, but enough to tell a little more about Harriot as a person and his relationship with his folks. It's a wonderful way to kick off this redux.
@@SpankinHands Wow, I always wanted to go too England especially the Yorkshire Dales too! Never been to England before but, my Mom went to London once and it was great!
@@ajaugenti1976 -- I was born on Mouldsworth Air Force Base UK, then raised in California. Up until my 20s I was able to fly back-and-forth on military transport. That privilege dried up in the 90s under George Bush Sr., but I've been back a couple of times. London is stupidly expensive now. Gone are the corner curry shops and little tailors where you could get a fab tweed coat custom tailored to your dream specifications for £80 (I still have three of the dozen I picked up over the years, and every time I wear one, people ask where I got it.) There are still Fish/Chips vendors, but my old gut can't handle much of it. If you ever go (if Americans ever regain admittance abroad), get out of the city. There were tons of farm and ranch B&Bs online. Some even offer horseback or buggy rides around the countryside. Opt for the "family breakfast" or "farmhand breakfast," which is usually around 4am. You'll eat with the workers from mountains of potatoes, sausages, roast beef hash made from yesterday's dinner, and lots of bread, usually white, but home baked. Oh yeah, and a giant can of pork-and-beans that I ate with breakfast once and never again. A couple of times I chose B&Bs that tempted with "gourmet cook" or "foodie heaven." I preferred the basic, honest, glorious chow at the early breakfasts and worker's dinner. Why go to an English farm for French sauces and Thai-inspired fare? There was an awesome farm hostel, where you could book a weekend or a month, and became part of the crew. I booked a weekend an screwed-up: I slept in instead of going to the Farmer's Market. So I booked for another weekend and it was fantastic. The hostel was done-in by Mad Cow restrictions and sold to a neighboring production farm. Sorry, nothing better to do today, than ramble. Final tip: If you go, plan really well. If you want to see the sights in London (or any major European city), check options. You can wait a couple of hours and pay full price for a ticket to the London Tower, Tate Museum, Pew Gardens or country manor houses, OR you can join a tour group, that often includes transportation, a meal, your ticket into an attraction, and transportation back -- all for less than the price of admission, and with no waiting in line.
Most soothing, warm and adorable series that I watched in a long time. Loved every single minute of it. All the characters so lovable, so endearing... The stories so innocent and heartwarming. I'm in love with the show. Impatiently waiting for season 3.
Sadly, in the US it has become almost impossible to become a veterinarian. The program costs $250,000 for the tuition alone, plus room and board for several years, fees, etc., etc. you have to be rich to afford it. Then when you graduate you need to join a practice where you probably don’t make enough money to pay both your student loans plus rent, car, food, utilities, insurance, cell phone, etc. That’s assuming you don’t also owe a ton of money earning your bachelor’s degree. It’s insane. No wonder vet fees have been getting so very expensive.
I really want to dislike this as the original series was simply perfect but I have a feeling I am going to love this. I have a feeling both can stand side by side and enjoyed equally.
Well, this is the jazzed up version. The original series have that very country feel. This new one has a Downton Abbey atmosphere that is more familiar to new American viewers.
A new series for a new generation. I loved the original but it is dated and constrained by 1970's BBC budgets. As long as they remain true to the books i've no problem with this.. It does look good.
@@roys8870 My friends & I were American viewers of the 1st series & we loved it. We love British productions. Downton Abbey is British to its bones as well, imo.
@@darkness_of_the_night I agree with all of that and I love the original series.. by 'dated' I mean that it was shot on video tape and had the budget of an average BBC show in the 1970's (which was next to nothing). That won't bring in younger viewers, but this will. Then when you have the new viewers that will most likely give the original series a big boost. Same thing happened with 2005's Doctor Who, once people saw how good the characters and stories were they went back and found the original and breathed new life into it. Personally for me i'd have the same problem if they redid the 'I Claudius' series, the Derek Jacobi series was perfect. I really can't see how that would be topped even with better production values.
I met Carol Drinkwater and her husband in London years ago. They were lovely. I also met Carol Decker from T'Pau at more or less the same time. Not so good. Anyway, the original ACGAS series was brilliant. I had a crush on Peter Davison and was scared of Robert Hardy who was a force of nature as Siegfried. They were all great actors with fantastic chemistry.
@@faithworldleader6891 Is he one of the least popular Doctors ? I don't know an awful lot about Dr Who. Devoured the books, over and over again. Laughed and cried through the original series with my parents when it finally arrived in 🇨🇦. Time to get the books out and have another read.
I have read the books so many times I've lost count. It was a hard life but simple. I did a lot of hiking around the dales years ago an it still looked like the books descriptions. Lovely way to get away from the modern world and all its issues.

@Lola - My mother gave me the first book of the series as a gift when I was in my teens, and I made the mistake of reading the first few chapters on the train - i could not hold back my laughter, and it was SO embarrassing. But I couldn't put the book down either, it grabs you from the first page!
Back in 1977 I worked as a herdsman on a farm at Sutton -under the white -stone -cliff,James Alfred Wight was our vet the guy who wrote the James Herriot books.
Hoping for the best. I must say this doesn’t look as charming and heartwarming as the original, yet I will be watching. (The original cast was unbeatable.)
The cast was great, but for me the original 1970s (1980s?) series proved unwatchable because they screwed around so much with the plus and the characters compared to the books. I adored the books. The series drove me up a tree precisely because it departed from them so much and I knew them by heart in certain chapters. I realize every TV version has to depart from the original here and there, leave stuff out, of course. I'm talking about changing things there was no reason to change because it wasn't any faster this way, it certainly wasn't any more charming this way, and it truly added nothing at all while in some cases robbing one of my favorite scenes.
@@Dreyno -- Fortunately they didn't try to replicate the original characterization. In the 2020 version, he is much closer to the age of Herriot, as his brother is Herriot's age. There's a bit more of an impossible lunatic quality -- it is made clear he's gone through a parade of possible assistants. When Harriot makes his way around the tough exterior, the formation of a bond is slow and feels authentic. The housekeeper is a huge upgrade in this version.

I think I'll look at the new recently produced episodes premiering in 2021 first, wait a couple of years, and then re-watch the old ones with Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy, and Peter Davison. @ Laura Buckles A hard act to follow as Siegfried was my initial thought too, but when I saw they'd cast Samuel West in the part, perfect. He''ll do the character justice. I don't think they could have cast anyone better in 2020. Like you, loved the books - couldn't stop reading them until I'd read every one once I discovered the first, and 1970's TV series. So looking forward to this from the trailer. Haha ...Dianna Rigg as Mrs. Pumphrey.
I have a crush on the original Siegfried 🥰🥰🥰
The first Siegfried was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the movie version. At the time, I thought he was perfect, but he was surpassed by Robert Hardy when the series was done. Like you, I have it settled that Hardy IS the quintessential Siegfried Farnon.
@@bonsaipal All of the originals were tops: James, his wife (wives),Tristan & ofc Siegfried. They are engraved, like the books, on my emotional memory.
@@mckavitt13 Agreed, they will always be first, but I still look forward to seeing the new series.
With all the 2020 weirdness, this remake is like finding a rose growing in a rubbish heap.
I LOVE THIS❤️👍😍
@@rebeccatrussell1766 - Then you are in for a wonderful treat! I also enjoyed it, and I was overjoyed when the original series came out. But therre are many commenters who seem to think that enjoying the new version somehow violates the original.
HEAR HEAR THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN ALL TIME FAVORITE - SO SO GLAD ITS BACK
I read these storys as a child.laughed and cried.ended up going to Agricultural school .I hope the series stands up to the books..biiig shoes to fill..
I absolutely loved the series with Christopher Timothy and I can't wait till January to see this it looks great!!!
It's already released in Britain if you didn't know
Did you enjoy the series then?
In the 80's my parents and I watched (and re-watched many times) the original series with Christopher Timothy, Robert Hardy, Peter Davison, and Carol Drinkwater. I hope that this new vision will also do justice to James Herriot and his country practice.
Amen to that!
So much character development occurs without announcement, which beautifully fulfills the screenwriting axiom: "Show it, don't say it."
The first episode reaches back a little further to Harriot's home with his parents on the docks.
@@SpankinHands Wow, that sounds awesome. Thank you! Anita
Most soothing, warm and adorable series that I watched in a long time. Loved every single minute of it. All the characters so lovable, so endearing... The stories so innocent and heartwarming. I'm in love with the show. Impatiently waiting for season 3.
I named my son after Tristan in the show. He is a junior bio major and thinking about vet school.
Naming your son after Tristan? Wow! That’s cool. Good luck to our new Tristan!
The name worked!
The world needs more vets, I hope he does
Sadly, in the US it has become almost impossible to become a veterinarian.
I named my son after Tristan as well🙂
I really want to dislike this as the original series was simply perfect but I have a feeling I am going to love this.
Agreed. They can hopefully stand side by side.
Ditto about Peter Davison. That's why he is my favorite Doctor which puts me in a very small group.
@@faithworldleader6891 Is he one of the least popular Doctors ? I don't know an awful lot about Dr Who. I thought Peter Capaldi was brilliant in the recent years so I am probably in a minority as well ha ha 🤣. Peter Davison was excellent opposite Amelia Bullmore in last year's Gentleman Jack. Older but, aren't we all ? He still has that twinkle in his eye.
Well now I feel very old! - I remember watching the original series and being head over heels (aged about 7) with Peter Davison's Tristan Farnon!
OH SWEET LAWD!!! This is the best news in a VERY LONG TIME. This looks like an absolutely perfect revisit of a legendary and beloved show. WOW. THANK YOU to all cast, crew and producers of this gift to humanity. I am not kidding. I think we are all in need of some serious balm for our souls -- and not in a pablum way. The photography looks magnificent, the casting of major characters looks spot on, the dialogue is intelligent. Holy cow. And yes there will be cows! Can't WAIT!!
I loved the James Herriot books as a child and loved the show even more, it had a profound effect on me, that I became an equine scientist.
I hope you enjoyed the new series Helen.
I grew up on the books, and loved the old series. This one looks good as well!
My mom turned me on to the All Creatures books which are some of the funniest books I've ever read. I was having breakfast in a restaurant by myself when I first read it and I drew some attention when I started laughing and could. not. stop. I'm looking forward to it.

They all did a great job, hope there's more. RIP Diana.
Thank you for this series. So little on TV nowadays, PBS is a saving grace.
My this is a handsome cast! I’m surprised they’ve remade it but It looks a treat. At least James has a Scottish accent this time 😊
Devoured the books, over and over again. Laughed and cried through the original series with my parents when it finally arrived in 🇨🇦. Time to get the books out and have another read.
Me Too! When they 1st came out they were in paperback, and I have every single one of them, plus EVERY other hard cover books that came out later!!
I have read the books so many times I've lost count. It was a hard life but simple. I did a lot of hiking around the dales years ago an it still looked like the books descriptions. Lovely way to get away from the modern world and all its issues.
This looks very good. Wouldn't it be nice if Peter Davison could make a cameo as a character.
Peter Davidson and Christopher Timothy were/are together again for Vintage Roads driving historic backroads of UK in vintage cars-- 3 episodes in 2018 and 4 episodes in 2019. Hope it comes back in 2020.

@Lola - My mother gave me the first book of the series as a gift when I was in my teens, and I made the mistake of reading the first few chapters on the train - i could not hold back my laughter, and it was SO embarrassing. But I couldn't put the book down either, it grabs you from the first page!
I love the James Herriot stories and I loved the original series. I am looking forward to this new one too.

I loved the original series, but was never convinced that Chris Timothy was the best choice for James Herriot.
@@angelakay2899 I absolutely agree with you. Robert Hardy, though, will forever be Siegfried to me.
Rix Sugarman This. No offence to the new incarnation but nobody can follow Robert Hardy.
For anyone in the U.K., this airs 9pm Tuesday 1st September on Channel 5, according to radiotimes.com. So with any luck will also be on My5 & Britbox streaming services......

I loved this series, and so wished that my father could have seen it, he would have been nearly glued to the set. Sadly, his local PBS station either didn't run it or we couldn't find it.
Always loved the characters and the very heartfelt acting. In one of the episodes one of the doctors had to put down his family's dog...I nearly cried when he took that dog for its last "walk" and you could see how devastating it was for the doctor.
Thank you BBC/PBS(?) for reviving this wonderful series. And thanks to the producers for bringing Ms Diana Rigg back to the small screen, I hope we get to see her for more than 1 or 2 episodes.
