  • In this video I whip out a simple shop fixture that needed to be made. A little welding, a little metal forming and a tiny bit of installation. Gotta get the shop squared away for the shop video tour.

    That was me. I moved in and started a business. Never got a grinder or vice mounted. Ten years ago. I plan on working on my lathe and put the electronics back on it since it moved here without it mounted. So much work on the business getting up 3 phase from 220 and all of the rest. Oh - 380v 3-Phase that is. Good project. Looks like a 2" 'washer' is needed off the lathe.

    Always glad to help. I've only been at this since 1995, but yeah, 5S should be everyone's goal in the shop. It makes the workplace so much easier, and things usually don't get lost. Juran and Deming had good ideas too. Great finish on the drill press.

    Hi Bill,
    You are correct. For welding stainless steel you keep the torch in place for a couple seconds to allow the last part of the weld to cool a bit under an shielding gas blanket.

    Hi Jc,
    I would guess 40-60 amps. I was using a foot pedal when I welded the rods. Stainless generally takes less amperage than steel because of its lower thermal conductivity. Hope that helps.

    Tom, 5S was the pinnacle of my shop and still is. So is my quality system & the quality manual. I'm eventually going to have to move though. my 24' x 36' shop is getting cramped. However labeling drawers, making sure like thing are with like things, and keeping things neat and organized can be a challenge. Machining is slow in August & September, but October looks promising. June and July were really busy.

    Tom, I've been going back and catching up on this older stuff. As I approach seniordom I don't know if I am getting lazy or more in-tuned with economy of motion.... I made several holders almost identical to this one. But as the last few years have passed I've gone back and cut the loop ends off and mounted the hammer holders up a bit higher so I could place and retrieve the hammers by the handle. It's a little thing, but sometimes when you need a hammer, you need to be able to grab and whack. But, I live just up I-80 in the Sierras and we get a bit of shaking so I was glad I took the time to create the saddles as you did. So far I haven't found one on the floor.

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ramosel Hi Ram,
      The wall is just a little too far away in this case. I would want it mounted higher if I was grabbing for the handle. I agree its easier to grab the handle and go. Thanks for the comment.

    A modification tip for the bender: Mill an angle in the fence front face, the one that touches the rod to be bent, so that when the rod pushes against the fence, it is also pushed down to keep it flat.

    Hi gbowne,
    The 5S principles are a good way to think about organization. I think I'm about 1.6 S right now. The punch over in the corner is a Rotex turret punch. Thanks for the comment.

    Now being a woodworker I would have drilled a hole at the end of the hammer handle to match the hole in the brush. Then I would have made matching pegs for both tools. My obsession is keeping everything symmetrical.
    Now you being a hammer collector would think it sacrilegious to drill a hole in a hammer handle. I get that.

    • @oxtoolco
      @oxtoolco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gosh I nearly stroked out with the thought of drilling a hole in a hammer handle. Woodchucks will stick their peg in any old hole. Thanks for the comment.

    Hi Tom, Really enjoy your vids, I work in a wiring harness factory in Australia an we have been looking for a better designed rod bender than we currently use ,. We use 5mm and 6m rod to make pegs for holding the wires off the board , I really like the design of your new bender and would like to know if you would share the plans for this bender as I think it would fit the bill, I could get our local machinist to build it for us.

    I saw your belt sander in the second of the steady rest videos. I need to make a table/rest for a used sander I picked up and wonder how you like the design of the one on yours. Would you change it if you had to build it again? Any chance for a close up picture of the bracket?

      Hi Marcel,
      I don't cut corners or skimp on abrasives. I have been using Norton Blaze belts for a while now with excellent results. For general purpose work I use 50 Grit. Its a good compromise between metal removal and surface finish. I can go to the 3M Scotchbrite deburring wheel and remove 50 Grit marks pretty easily. Thanks for the comment.

    2 more hooks may have worked better for the hammer than a loop, IMHO. That way your movement would be horizontal rather than vertical 'up and out.' Just thinking. Nice finished project.

    • @TheSuburban15
      @TheSuburban15 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are pegboard hooks and hoops made for the specific purpose of holding tools. I would have drilled holes in the file cabinet and used those. Not as elegant of a solution, but it would have been easier.

    It might have been a little more user friendly had the hammer holder be open in the front, that way you could pick it up at the handle end and be ready to go.
    And if the brush was handle down it would be ready to go too.
