      100% Agree. I haven't watched TV in years but whenever I go into a bar and they're playing a random show, I can't help but be appalled at how genuinely awful they are compared to some of the content TH-camrs like Sorted produce.
      Like I enjoy watching it, but shows like GBBO should at least be able to put in the effort to learn how to say "Pico de Gallo". It's just poor effort.

    I just wanna say how much I appreciate the boys not only taking time to highlight gullah culture from a food perspective, but also taking the time to include a historic gay bar and drag performers in this video as part of the city and the people and the culture. Right now it means so much for showcases of american culture, especially southern culture, to show this range of experience and diversity positively and as part of one whole. I really appreciated that bit. I know Sorted steers clear of politics, which made them including it all the more powerful - It shouldn't be a political statement to have fun with some queens in drag for a night. It looks like you all had a blast. I'm so jealous of everyone who got to eat that spread at the end. Looked fantastic.

    Turns out that biscuits are one of the harder things to get right... if you want them like you had them. Here's a Southern tip: Pick up some bags of White Lily flour. It's a soft wheat instead of the hard wheat that most flours are made with. Some people swear that Southern biscuits can't be made to the same tenderness without using White Lily flour specifically.

    • @duckmyass
      @duckmyass ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Bigger problem that I think he screwed up was over working the dough. If you work it too much it ruins the biscuits. It was pretty clear from seeing the rolled out dough that he over mixed it.

    • @cassieoz1702
      @cassieoz1702 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      In much of the world, you can buy 'cake flour' which would work too

    • @meeperator
      @meeperator ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The right amount of baking powder helps keep em airy too.
      Also I've never had a square southern biscuit. You roll it out, use a round biscuit cutter, and then roll the rest out for a few more. Whatever's left are some fun shapes to feed the kids.
      I just wanted to hear how close they got to authentic

    • @CupcakeGremlin
      @CupcakeGremlin ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This and biscuits are one of those things that look like you’re doing it wrong until suddenly it comes together. And experience is really the only way you know.

    • @duckmyass
      @duckmyass ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@CupcakeGremlin The problem is you can't tell from looking at the finished biscuit if it was good or not. The difference is in the texture and how it feels when you bite into it. Couple that with inviting southerns to eat and you would never know from any reactions. I came from a family of southerners on one side and yankees on the other. Yankees had no problem criticizing someones cooking to their face. Southerners were the polar opposite and would tell you how much the enjoyed something that tasted like shit, and then discuss it with others about how bad it was after the cook had left. So in this video I doubt we got the real take on what the folks they invited to sample the food really thought. The cooks would only have been able to tell by how the people reacted and even then it can be subtle differences in how things are said that would tell you what they really thought. Asking how you made something or saying that an interesting flavor what did you use are good things they usually mean it doesn't taste right. Hell with southerners manners make life a pain in the ass, they will often offer you something that they really don't want to give you like the last piece of a pie, and expect that you will say no with the understanding that both of you are just being polite... and if you really did want to offer it to them you would offer it again.

    I have lived in the UK for nearly 8 years now, American-born in New Jersey, late teens in Florida, and a few years in my early 20s i lived in South Carolina. My mother and grandmother was born and raised in Alabama, with a history from there. I've been cooking since i was in my early teens, learning from my Grandmothers (my paternal grandmother was born in the US, raised in NYC, but both parents and all older siblings were born in the UK) their recipes and techniques, as well as professionally when i was older......and will soon be opening a historic pub in Wales. I'm excited to cook and share what i have learned both food-wise, and hospitality-wise with the locals. I love what you guys did there, and glad to see you try the things i'm used to, since for the past 8 years i have been learning the British way, and the food offered here, and know how eye-opening it can be. I really hope the Sorted Team reads this comment. Quick story: when I was back in high school ( late 90's) my dad would regularly chat in British chat rooms. For context, we live in North Carolina. He made friends with a couple and would even chat on the phone with them a couple of times. The subject of Southern style biscuits came up. We sent her my mother's recipe. She talked about how she could add vanilla or sugar to it and we told her "no, the sweet stuff is added after it's baked". Well, she made some for her husband and they loved them. She told my dad that her husband has her cook them on a regular basis. He was hooked. Biscuit recipes can vary slightly depending on the home. I think you guys did a great job!
