No need to be Buddhism member, you can keep what background of your religions or any beliefs and you can spend time to learn Buddhism core at the same time as well, Lord Buddha he is being like a teacher who found the truth in nature and shared for us and he always emphasized to try studying his teachings then to practice of what he taught, when you receive the good findings you may or may not to make a decision to believe and share to others. For example, main core of Buddhism is letting the attachment go that means we spent too much time to explore outside of our mind but we forget to spend time to take care of our mind, imagine when you get suffering from something that is very critical, we have been taught to focus on on our inside for few mins or hours before will think about the root cause and find solutions for any issues thru our living. Additionally, most important core is 3 common characters which explains everything is uncertain or impermanent even our body, imagine when you lose someone or something who you loved immediately, how will you handle that situation? Of course, we are sad and may cry even being a monk but after this if you get 3 things to make you understand the nature laws that are explaining about the impermanence (e.g. seasons change, tree leaves are falling) Lose a beloved one (e.g. someone who you love was back to nature) and Non-self(e.g. we’re getting old). As you can see why monk has to shave their hair because they don’t wanna worry about the attachment or spend time too much with body make-up, even for eating food taste of good and bad favors could not be focused on while their eating only one meal per day before 12 pm mandatorily, you may see they use alm round blow which might be mixed for food and desserts or snacks together and they are not allowed to ask for favorite food as per 227 precepts for male monk, it’s mandated to eat whatever people gave as they are being as beggars and can’t keep any leftovers over night after meal only liquid is allowed to drink. Anyway I’m just clarifying further and sharing how hard they live but these are not for urban temples hahah only for most of forest traditional temples they must do like this and it’s not really easy to be ordinated as I can see many westerners come to forest monastery in northeast of Thailand at least they have be there 2-3 years to ensure they need to practice and go back to nature, because the goal is to the enlightenment or nirvana that means no feelings from making happiness or suffering from outside that send thru your body but they will see long term peaceful happiness in their own mind only.
It's quite true that to learn to practise the Buddha's teaching it's not always neccessay to become a monk. But different people have different family background and different way of thinking. So leaving one's own home temporarily to come and live in a temple that has congenial environment for practising, may be very helpful for one to progress quickly.
Thanks so much Dave! Glad to hear it was helpful. If you want you can add my IG as ill be making some Thai teaching content, id is same as YT , gowithkob
very good video, thanks for learning thai so well :D I really love when tourists learn the language and enjoy the country, I am doing the same before my first visit
In ancient of Siam(Thailand), temple was kind of school it was the place that collected many subjects of knowledge especially moral and mind (inner control) even medical ,war dossier, arts ,etc. And usually man becomes monk once to practice they mind (inner peace) But by times traditional became believed and overlook the real purpose 😅 Thank you for love and share your perspective about Thailand😊
@@gowithkob : Honestly, there's nothing wrong regarding Buddhist monks put their palm-hands joining together in a posture of "Wai" since they haven't bowed down to or near the feet of their interlocutor's. It's like that of Westerners shake each others' hands. See the Dalai Lama, he does that all the time wherever he goes. If I were him eg.that new ordained monk, I'd have reciplocated with a wai and saying some blessings like 'May you be always healthy and happy', that'd be a very beautiful reaction, but since he's a new commer, so he doesn't know how to react to your 'wai' correctly.
CONGRATULATIONS!!I THINK IS A GREAT CHALLENGE SPEAK LIKE A THAI PEOPLE.REGARDS FROM ARGENTINA.P.S. I AT MY 81 YEARS OLD ENJJOY YOUR VIDEO THANKS FOR IT,
Introducing Wat Debsirin It is a temple of the ancient kings. Located in the heart of Bangkok There is a very beautiful temple church. I want you to see it. Not many tourists go. Most of them are Thai people who go to make merit.
Normally, for me whose kind of atheist. Wat is mainly for cremation. I don't go there as much. But still go to some wat that got beautiful achitecture, and kind of touristy for Thai. My mom went there every month or so to make merit(ทำบุญ) by กรวดน้ำ(pour water of dedication)/ถวายสังฆทาน(don't know the translation) to her friends and our family members who passed away. But that is the local wat practise. If it's a touristy Thai's wat. Usually we go there to ไหว้พระ (pay respect to Buddha statue). Light the incense sticks and the candles. Put lotus flower down. And then put gold leaf onto Buddha statue. After that, just walk around and drop your money into thousands of donation box lol. All wats in Thailand now getting commercialized and try to pull your money out. But some of them in the rural area still being วัดป่า, which is smth like a real deal wat. Least about money, strict to the root and peaceful to the max.
Did you know this area, Bhuddha yodfah bridge, Metropolitan electric ity authority were bombed by US in WW2 and Wat leab was damaged too. And every Wat, monks have to pray for evening at 18.00 Buddhists can join.
Wow, I was not at all aware. I went there because the guard guided be there. But every place has a story, I appreciate you telling me the history behind it!
Okay you got me, maybe this is just a joke? - Popular temple is out because it has tourists, 1st tuk-tuk boss sees 'typical' American tourist who asks him for: I want no people/tourists - so he sends you to a 'closed' temple. LOL - obviously no people inside it, he saw you coming and you got hook, line and sunk paying for tuk-tuk ride to a closed temple. I couldn't stop laughing! Your title says, "Then this happened!" What happened? you met a part-time 15-day monk teen/young guy who opened a door and 'showed' you an empty (no people/tourist) interior of stunning and beautiful different temple that is NOT well known or "popular", or heavily visited. Wow,, that's brilliant, at a non-popular temple! Popular = touristy. So again, what happened?? I'm still in stitches laughing. Hope I can learn Thai so I understand your point, however, it's great you speak Thai so well. Lucky you.
Traditionally, temples were places for practicing peace. But Thai temples are both places of practice and centers of the community. Nowadays, some temples are popular places for people to visit and have become tourist attractions. This gives the monks less time to practice themselves. Temples that have fewer people visiting are therefore not inferior places. A temple where many people go But it is a good place for monks who want to train themselves. Those who want to truly enter the path of religion will choose a temple that is far away from civilization and in the forest. Tourists may understand that Temples are a collection of beautiful Thai architecture. But that is a temple in a big city. In fact The temple in the forest was just a residence for the monks. There isn't any beautiful architecture. But focus on training Entering peace and living in harmony with natur
